Straight from HSC to a Hungarian bachelor's: the scholarship sets your year, not the university

In short: An HSC gets you straight into a Hungarian bachelor's. Twelve years of schooling, no foundation year. What is different about Hungary is that the calendar belongs to a scholarship, not a university: the Stipendium Hungaricum round is a winter one for teaching that begins in September, and its result and your permit file end up pressed into the same stretch of the year. Self-funded, public tuition is EUR 0 to 5,000 a year and living EUR 400 to 600 a month.

The direct answer

Your HSC is enough. A Bangladeshi HSC, an Alim or A-Levels count as the twelve years of schooling a European bachelor's admission is built on, and Hungary admits on that qualification plus good results, normally at age 18 or over (a bachelor's in Europe after HSC, is there an age limit, Alim and madrasah sanad).

That matters because the opposite is sold hard here. If you are told your HSC is "not enough" for Hungary, ask which university published that, and on which page. And if a preparatory or foundation year is offered to you, ask what specific gap it repairs before you buy a year you may not need (is a foundation or pathway year worth it).

One boundary gets blurred constantly: this is after HSC, not after SSC. An SSC alone is ten years of schooling and does not qualify for a European bachelor's, whatever an advertisement implies (what an SSC can and cannot do).

What is actually different about Hungary

Of the nine countries we work on, Hungary is the one where a full government scholarship genuinely funds bachelor's degrees for Bangladeshi students. That fact reorganises everything else on this page (what Stipendium covers, and how to win it).

Everywhere else, an after-HSC plan is an admission plan with money attached afterwards. In Hungary it is the other way round: the money carries the earlier deadline, so the scholarship sets your calendar and the university follows. Deciding to "look at scholarships later" is here the same decision as not applying at all — you simply find out months afterwards.

The sequence, and who owns each date

We will not print next year's dates: they are set per cycle, and only two places publish them — the call for applications on the scholarship portal, and your programme's own page. What does not change is the order, and the order is what people get wrong.

The deadline you are most likely to have already missed is the winter round itself — and the reason is almost never the form. It is that board verification, attestation, the apostille and certified translation cannot be compressed into the weeks before it (the attestation chain in order, board verification first, certified translation). The collision at the centre of a Hungarian year

Here is what almost nobody tells a school-leaver.

The scholarship is applied for in winter for a September start, so the decision arrives some months after you apply. Meanwhile the permit file cannot sensibly be completed until you hold the document proving your place and your funding. Those two things are pressed into the same stretch of the year, and neither Tempus nor the immigration authority publishes a date you can plan against.

What is published is a ceiling, and only that. Hungary is in the EU, so Directive (EU) 2016/801 gives a decision on a complete student application a maximum of 90 days — counted from the day the file became complete, not the day you handed it in, and paused while the authority waits on you. It is a legal maximum, not an estimate, and no authority publishes a processing time for this route at all (what actually moves that clock).

So the instinct almost every family has — wait for the result, then start the paperwork — is the one move that puts your own September at risk.

The fix is unglamorous and it works: do the document chain while you wait. Attestation, the apostille, translation, the bank history, police clearance and the passport are all things a scholarship result does not change (proof of funds, what an officer reads, police clearance, the e-passport). If the award comes you file immediately; if it does not, you file self-funded, with nothing lost but application fees.

Hungary accepts a Bangladeshi apostille, in force since 30 March 2025, which shortens that chain — unlike Denmark, Greece and Finland, which objected under Article 12 and still need full consular legalisation (who refuses it). The file is submitted in Dhaka, at VFS, as a type D national visa, so no trip to India is part of this route (where you apply, what follows).

Two applications, not one

The structural trap inside Stipendium is not difficulty. It is that the application has two halves and most descriptions of it have one.

The first half is on the scholarship's own portal, run by Tempus Public Foundation: the form, your programme choices, your documents. The second is a nomination on the Bangladesh side, run by the sending partner, announced through the education ministry's own notices, with its own separate deadline, and historically involving hard copies delivered in person.

Submit the online half, wait, and you are simply not in the competition. The responsible body and the procedure can change between cycles, so check the official portal and the ministry's notices for your own cycle, not last year's blog post — including this one (why applications fail, the motivation letter, the interview).

One honest note on odds: no authority publishes a success rate, so any percentage you are quoted was invented. Apply, and keep a self-funded plan alive beside it (scholarships beyond Stipendium, reading a scholarship advertisement).

The examination instead of the certificate

For an HSC-leaver who has not sat IELTS, Hungary has a door most of Europe does not.

Many Hungarian programmes assess English themselves — their own test, or a short online interview — and some accept a Medium of Instruction letter instead of a certificate (Hungary without IELTS, the online interview, who accepts an MOI letter, asking for a waiver).

Two qualifications, both load-bearing. That is a door a department opens, not a national entitlement, so find the programme that opens it before you plan around it. And where a certificate is asked for, the bands we observe are 5.5 to 6.0 overall: our observation across the programmes we work with, not a Hungarian rule, because Hungary publishes no national band (bands by country). If you do sit the test, computer-delivered IELTS was listed in Bangladesh at BDT 29,600 on 9 September 2026, with One Skill Retake at BDT 18,600, and paper IELTS ended after 31 January 2026 (fees and dates).

The same instinct — assess the applicant, not the paperwork — is why entrance examinations are normal here, set by the faculty rather than nationally. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are the demanding end of it, and candidates do fail (Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, BME). Check too that a programme is genuinely taught in English (how, the entry rules).

Applying while your HSC result is still pending

Whether a Hungarian programme will look at you before your result is published is decided programme by programme, not nationally, so the only reliable answer is the admissions office's own, in writing (what to do while you wait).

What to do with the waiting months is not in doubt: everything that does not depend on the result gets done now, and the certificate chain starts the day the marksheet exists. A conditional offer, where one is made, is a real offer with one fragile property — miss the condition or its date and the place normally goes to someone else.

The money, plainly

Three honest qualifications. Hungary's immigration authority publishes no fixed funds figure: it tests whether you can meet your costs from lawful means, so show comfortably more than the guide number (Hungary's proof of funds, why an inflated statement gets caught). The country bills in forint, so every euro figure above is an approximate conversion (your budget is not in euros). And Budapest tops every range while Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs sit lower on the same public system (Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, what it all costs).

Within that Bangladesh-side spend, attestation, translation and legalisation run BDT 10,000 to 30,000, courier BDT 4,000 to 9,000, and a ticket BDT 70,000 to 120,000 (the costs nobody budgets for). Proof of funds is not a fee: it is money that must exist and be traceable, not money that is collected.

What Hungary does not publish, and who does answer it

Four blanks, stated plainly, because filling them with a confident number is the commonest dishonesty here.

Weekly work hours. Part-time work during study is permitted, and Hungary publishes no national hours figure; much of what circulates online describes immigration rules since replaced. The body that answers it for your own permit is the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, asked in writing (what is settled about student work, the cross-Europe picture).

A processing time. None is published for this route. The 90-day maximum above is a legal ceiling on a complete application, not an estimate of your wait.

A scholarship or visa success rate. Nobody produces one, so we do not either.

A national English band. There is none. The course page is the only page that binds you.

Who should not do this

If you need to earn from the first month and send money home, Hungary is a poor bet. Part-time earnings do not carry tuition anywhere in Europe, English-language student work is concentrated in Budapest rather than the cheaper university towns, and there is no published hours figure to plan against. Even a full scholarship pays a modest stipend, not a salary (a student visa is not a work permit).

If your family cannot evidence roughly EUR 6,000 and the plan only works if the scholarship comes, wait a cycle rather than betting a year. A scholarship you have applied for is not money. Students who apply only to Stipendium and are unsuccessful commonly lose the whole year, because the result does not arrive early enough to start elsewhere from scratch (applying to several countries at once).

If your goal is to settle in Europe as quickly as possible, look elsewhere first. The post-study job-seeking permit is nine months, and study years do not count toward Hungary's national three-year residence count, counting only half toward EU long-term residence and citizenship (post-study work and residence, what Hungary is actually good for).

If you want an English-speaking life rather than English classes, be clear-eyed: the degree is in English, the country is in Hungarian, a language barely spoken elsewhere (how much local language you need, English-taught or local-language).

Who it fits
