Students from the madrasah stream often assume European study is closed to them. It is not, and that assumption stops many from applying at all.
What the state equivalence says
Under the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board:
| Madrasah stream | General equivalent | European level |
|---|---|---|
| Dakhil | SSC | Secondary |
| Alim | HSC | Upper secondary (EQF 4) |
| Fazil | Bachelor's | EQF 6 |
| Kamil | Master's | EQF 7 |
European admissions offices do not know every Bangladeshi board by name. What they assess is whether the qualification is state-recognised evidence of completing secondary or upper-secondary education. Alim is exactly that.
Where the real challenges are
1. English-language versions
The most common obstacle. Bengali certificates are not directly usable. The Madrasah Education Board can issue English versions — request them when you apply. Otherwise certified translation adds time and cost.
2. Subject prerequisites
This is a subject problem, not a stream problem — a general-stream humanities student faces exactly the same thing.
| To study | Your transcript needs |
|---|---|
| Medicine | Biology + chemistry |
| Engineering / computer science | Mathematics + physics |
| Business / economics | Mathematics (usually enough) |
| Social sciences, languages, Islamic studies, international relations | Few specific prerequisites |
Alim in the science group opens science-based subjects. From the general or humanities group, science-based subjects are hard to reach directly, and social sciences, business, languages and humanities are the realistic applications.
3. English proficiency
Madrasah teaching is normally in Bengali, so the MOI route is generally not available. IELTS or an accepted alternative is required — and this is the main preparation, entirely achievable with time. See our preparation plan.
Advantages worth using deliberately
These genuinely differentiate an application:
- Arabic — a valuable language in Europe for international relations, translation, Middle East studies and development work
- Multilingualism — Bengali, Arabic, English; European institutions value it
- Islamic studies, theology and Middle Eastern studies are established, research-active departments in European universities, where your background is a competitive advantage rather than a weakness
In your motivation letter, explain the stream in one or two sentences ("Alim is the national equivalent of higher secondary education, awarded by the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board") and then present it as a strength. Without the explanation a foreign evaluator will guess, and guesses do not favour you.
What to do, in order
- 1Obtain English certificates and mark sheets from the Madrasah Education Board
- 2Check your Alim subject list and decide which fields are realistic
- 3Plan for IELTS — this is your main preparation
- 4Email two or three universities explaining the equivalence and get written confirmation
- 5Start the attestation chain

Common questions
Can I apply to a European bachelor's with an Alim certificate?+
Yes. Alim is the state-recognised equivalent of HSC, and European universities assess level and subjects rather than the name of the stream. The two main preparations are obtaining English-language certificates and taking IELTS or an accepted alternative.
Can madrasah students study medicine or engineering in Europe?+
It depends on your Alim group. The science group gives you biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics on the transcript, which opens those fields. From the general group, social sciences, business, languages and humanities are the realistic applications.
Will an MOI certificate work?+
Usually not, since madrasah teaching is normally in Bengali. IELTS or an accepted alternative test is the main route, and it is the principal preparation for students from this stream.
