Study in Cyprus from Bangladesh

Cyprus is the most administratively straightforward European destination for a Bangladeshi student, because the entire process is handled from Dhaka — there is no trip to Delhi for a visa appointment. Private university tuition runs about €3,500–7,000 a year, and you show around €7,000 in funds; no blocked account is required. The English requirement is set by the state: IELTS 5.0 or an equivalent listed test such as TOEFL or PTE, and a Medium of Instruction certificate is not on that list. Intakes are September and January–February. One thing to be clear about: Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so the residence permit does not give you free Schengen travel.

Why Cyprus?
For a lot of Bangladeshi students the hardest part of a European application is not the university — it is the embassy. Several countries require an in-person appointment in New Delhi, which means an Indian transit visa, travel cost and a real risk of scheduling problems. Cyprus removes that entire category of difficulty: applications and the student permit are handled from Dhaka.
The universities themselves are mostly private, English-taught, and used to international students. The English bar is set by the state rather than the university, and it is low: IELTS 5.0 or an equivalent such as TOEFL iBT 71 or PTE Academic 58. A Medium of Instruction letter is not on that list, but a student below the minimum can enter through an accredited English Language Foundation Programme.
The honest caveat is Schengen. Cyprus joined the EU in 2004 but is not part of the Schengen area, so your Cypriot residence permit does not let you travel freely across the rest of Europe the way an Italian or Hungarian one does. If weekend travel across Europe is central to why you want to study there, factor that in.
What we would tell you honestly
- Cyprus is in the EU but NOT in the Schengen area. Your residence permit does not give you visa-free travel across Schengen countries — this is the single most common misunderstanding about studying here.
- Most of the universities are private, and quality varies. Check accreditation and the specific programme rather than relying on a general reputation.
- You cannot work in the first six months. Budget for a full semester with no income at all.
- There is usually an application or service fee of around €350 on top of tuition.
The entire process runs from Dhaka
No Delhi appointment, no Indian transit visa, no extra travel cost — a genuine and often decisive practical advantage.
A low English bar
The state minimum is IELTS 5.0, and cheaper listed tests such as PTE Academic or Password Skills Plus meet it too, which makes Cyprus reachable for students without a strong IELTS band. An MOI letter does not.
Everything is taught in English
Programmes are English-medium end to end, and English is widely spoken across the island.
Predictable, mid-range cost
Tuition of €3,500–7,000 and living costs of €500–800 a month sit well below Western Europe without being bargain-basement.
Two intakes a year
September and January–February, so a missed deadline costs months rather than a full year.
An EU degree
Cypriot universities are EU-accredited, so the qualification is recognised across Europe.

Proof of funds for the visa
€7,000 for one year, as a bank letter plus statement, and a bank guarantee for repatriation. The amount is set by the university rather than the government and runs €5,000–7,000 in practice, so plan on €7,000. No blocked account required.
First-year estimate
Tuition €3,500–7,000 plus living costs of about €6,000–9,600 a year gives a first-year total of roughly €9,500–16,600.
An application or service fee of roughly €350 per year is typical on top of tuition.

Is Cyprus in the Schengen area?+
No. Cyprus is a member of the European Union but is not part of the Schengen area, so a Cypriot student residence permit does not give you free travel across Schengen countries. This is the most common misunderstanding about studying in Cyprus and it is worth being clear about before you apply.
Do I really not need to go to Delhi?+
Correct. The application and student permit process for Cyprus is handled from Dhaka, which removes the Indian transit visa, the travel cost and the scheduling risk that come with a Delhi appointment.
Can I apply without IELTS?+
Without IELTS, yes; without any English test, no. Since July 2023 the state has set a minimum for students from outside the EU: IELTS 5.0, TOEFL iBT 71, PTE Academic 58 or another listed test, and some IGCSE and A-Level English grades count too.
