What Hungary is actually good for, and who should look elsewhere

Who Hungary genuinely suits

The student who can win a scholarship and cannot fund a year. This is the whole case for Hungary. Stipendium Hungaricum is a bilateral government programme, which means Hungary allocates a number of places to Bangladeshi applicants specifically rather than dropping them into a global pool. It pays tuition in full and adds a monthly stipend, an accommodation contribution and medical insurance. That is not a tuition discount dressed up as a scholarship. It is the whole cost.

The medical or engineering applicant. Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and the Budapest University of Technology have long track records, and medicine and dentistry in Hungary are recognised across the EU. If your target is an EU-recognised medical degree and Bulgaria feels too small a country to spend six years in, Hungary is the alternative.

The self-funded student on a tight budget who still wants Schengen. Tuition of EUR 0-5,000 and living costs from about EUR 400 a month keep the self-funded route reachable, and Hungary is in both the EU and the Schengen area, so the residence permit carries travel rights that a Cypriot one does not.

The student who wants to apply from Dhaka. The Type D national visa application, biometrics and document submission are all handled at VFS in Dhaka. There is no Delhi trip.

The deadline is the whole story

Almost every strong Bangladeshi applicant who does not get Stipendium Hungaricum was not rejected. They found out about it in April, for a round that closed in January. If Hungary is on your list at all, the practical instruction is to check the scholarship portal in September, not to wait until you feel ready.

Money, honestly

Hungary bills in forint, not euro. Every euro figure on this page — and on every other page about Hungary, including the government's own English pages — is a conversion, and the conversion moves. A tuition bill quoted at EUR 4,000 is really a forint number, and if the rate moves against you between the offer and the payment, you pay the difference.

Hungary's immigration authority publishes no fixed funds figure. It asks you to prove you can cover living costs, accommodation, return travel and healthcare from lawful income. In practice about EUR 6,000 for a year, roughly HUF 200,000 a month, is what applications are built on, and showing more is safer than showing exactly the minimum. No blocked account is required.

Budapest is not the only option

Rent is the line that moves most between Hungarian cities, and Budapest sits at the top of the range. Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs all host large medical and science faculties with established international cohorts, and all three cost less to live in than the capital — which, for a self-funded student, is often the difference between a workable budget and a stretched one. If you are applying for medicine or dentistry, those three are where the programmes are anyway.

Two practical notes. University halls are far cheaper than the private market and they fill early, so apply for a place the week your offer arrives rather than after you land. Do not choose Hungary if

1. 1You are reading this after January and want to start in September on a scholarship. That round has closed. Plan for the next one rather than paying to chase this one.
2. 2You need the scholarship to happen. It is competitive. Have a self-funded plan, or a second country, running in parallel.
3. 3Part-time earnings are load-bearing in your budget. Hungarian is a genuinely hard language and is spoken almost nowhere else, which narrows student work far more than in Malta or Cyprus.
4. 4You want a long runway after graduating. Nine months is the shortest defined stay-back among the nine. If building a career in Europe is the actual goal rather than the degree, look at Denmark's three years or Finland's two first.
5. 5You cannot absorb currency risk. A forint-denominated bill with a taka income is a real exposure, not a technicality.
