Where students actually live
Nagyerdő, around the main campus, is the most convenient and slightly dearer. Belváros is the centre; Tócóskert and Újkert are panel-block districts with the lowest rents. The city is compact and tram lines 1 and 2 cover most of what you need.
The university
University of Debrecen is one of Hungary's largest, with a broad English-taught catalogue: medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, IT and business. Medicine and dentistry fees run into five figures in euros per year; other programmes cost far less. Fees change annually — take them from the university's own fee page and nowhere else.
Work, honestly
English-language work here is limited. There is growing industry around the city, but most jobs need Hungarian. The realistic options are on-campus work, lab assistant roles, tutoring and delivery. Do not come to Debrecen on a plan that funds tuition from part-time earnings; it does not hold.
Community
Good. There are Bangladeshi students here through both Stipendium Hungaricum and self-financed routes, along with student societies. Halal meat and South Asian groceries are available, though the range is narrower than in Budapest.
The honest bits
- 1Long, cold winters — budget for proper clothing.
- 2A quiet city. If you want a big city's pace you will find it dull.
- 3On the other side: low costs, safety, and a campus-centred life that makes the first year easier.
Before you fly
- 1Apply for a dormitory on time — it is the single biggest control on your costs.
- 2Have EUR 800-1,200 for the first two months.
- 3Read the DreamApply walkthrough before you start the application.

Common questions
Is Debrecen cheaper than Budapest?+
Clearly — usually EUR 100-200 a month less, mostly in rent. But English-language part-time work is much scarcer here, so if you were counting on earnings the arithmetic can reverse.
Can I fund my studies by working in Debrecen?+
No, and you should not plan on it. English-language jobs are limited and most work requires Hungarian. Part-time work can help with pocket money, not with tuition.
What does medicine cost at Debrecen?+
Medicine and dentistry run into five figures in euros per year, while other programmes cost considerably less. The numbers change every year, so take them from the university's own fee page rather than any third-party summary.
