The city and the campus
Pécs sits at the foot of the Mecsek hills in southern Hungary and is the region's cultural centre. Unlike flat Szeged it is hilly, so buses matter more than bicycles. The faculties are spread out — the medical school sits near the centre, others further afield — so check where your faculty is before choosing accommodation.
The university
University of Pécs teaches medicine in both English and German, with a long history of doing so, alongside pharmacy, business, engineering and informatics. Its share of international students is among the highest in Hungary.
Work, honestly
Limited. English-language work is scarce in a small city, and a medical syllabus leaves little time anyway. If you are coming for medicine, plan on funding the whole thing from family resources or a scholarship.
The honest bits
- 1A small labour market. Do not plan for income here.
- 2Weigh tuition against living costs together. Medical tuition is high while living costs are low, so the total is what matters, not either figure alone.
- 3On the other side: safe, attractive, inexpensive, and well set up for international students.
Before you fly
- 1Find out where your faculty is, then choose accommodation.
- 2Apply for a dormitory on time.
- 3If medicine is the goal, compare the total cost against the Bulgarian route — the sums work out differently.

Common questions
Is Pécs the cheapest city in Hungary?+
It is at the cheapest end, typically EUR 320-500 a month. The reason is straightforward: a small city with a small labour market, so low costs and few earning opportunities arrive together.
What is studying medicine in Pécs like?+
The University of Pécs has taught medicine in English and German to international students for decades, so the support structures are mature. Tuition is high and living costs are low — work out the combined annual figure before deciding.
Can I work while studying in Pécs?+
Realistically, very little. English-language jobs are scarce in a city this size and a medical timetable leaves no room. Secure your full funding before you apply for the visa.
