A master's in Hungary from Bangladesh: this is a scholarship plan with an admission attached

Almost everyone who looks at a master's in Hungary from Bangladesh thinks in the same order: programme first, then university, then "I will see whether there is a scholarship". In Hungary that order is backwards, and the price of getting it backwards is a whole year.

The reason is simple. The date that decides your year in Hungary is not a university's admission date. It is the government scholarship's date, and it closes roughly eight months before teaching starts. So the decision to "look at funding later" is really the decision not to be funded, and it is a decision people make without noticing they have made it.

This guide puts the order back the right way round: the money first, then the calendar, then the qualification, English, the examination, the paperwork and the visa — in the order those things actually bite.

Why the money comes first at master's level

Put the two routes side by side and there is not much left to argue about.

For one yearOn Stipendium HungaricumSelf-funded
TuitionWaived in fullEUR 0 to 5,000 on a public programme
LivingFree dorm or housing allowance, plus a stipend of about EUR 110 a monthEUR 400 to 600 a month, all yours
Health insuranceIncludedSchengen cover of EUR 30,000, bought separately
Funds to evidence for the visaLess, but not nothingAbout EUR 6,000 for the year, in practice EUR 6,000 to 8,000
The date that bindsMid-January, for a September startThe university's own, often spring to early summer

Look at the stipend against the living band: about EUR 110 a month against EUR 400 to 600. The scholarship removes tuition completely; it does not remove the month. The dorm place or housing allowance covers the largest part of what is left, and the remainder still comes from home. Students who arrive believing a full scholarship means needing nothing from Bangladesh are caught out in the first semester. The full list of benefits and how the application is structured is in the Stipendium Hungaricum guide.

One honest note about competition. No authority publishes selection rates by level, so a page quoting you "the master's success rate" has invented the number, and we will not supply one either. What is structurally true is that in the master's field everyone is already holding a finished degree. An HSC result no longer separates anyone. What separates people is the transcript, the subject match, the motivation letter and the entrance examination — which is exactly what the rest of this guide is about.

How the clock actually runs

Several clocks run at once in Hungary. For a master's applicant they fall in this order.

WhenWhat happensWhat you do
September, the year beforeThe Call for Applications goes up on the official portalOpen the portal that month, not when you feel ready
October to DecemberDocuments and EnglishStart attestation; book, sit and receive an IELTS score
Mid-JanuaryThe scholarship application closesSubmit both applications — see below
FebruaryNomination on the Bangladesh sideTrack the ministry notice and its own date
March to MayEntrance examinations and interviewsSubject revision, a quiet room, stable internet
June to JulyResultsBy now the visa file should already be assembled
By JuneVisa and residence permit file submittedAllow 4 to 6 weeks, more in the July and August rush
SeptemberTeaching starts

Read two of those rows together and the trap appears. Results arrive in June or July, while the visa file for a September start is best submitted by June. The clocks overlap, so pausing your document chain to wait for a scholarship result is a way of putting your own September at risk. The dates are unpacked in Hungary's intakes and deadlines, and the pattern across the nine countries in the European application timeline.

Missing January does not close Hungary. Self-funded admission stays open for months afterwards, because each university sets its own dates, usually through an admission software called DreamApply, often on a rolling basis (applying through DreamApply). You lost the funding, not the intake. There is also money that is almost never advertised centrally (Hungarian university scholarships beyond Stipendium).

Two applications, one year

The place where strong Stipendium candidates come unstuck is not merit. It is structure.

This is two applications, not one. One goes to the Tempus Public Foundation's own portal. In parallel, a nomination application goes to the sending partner on the Bangladesh side, with its own date, and historically with hard copies. Submitting only the online half and then waiting costs a full year for no reason at all, because the work is not difficult — it is simply unknown to most applicants until it is too late.

The responsible body and the process can change between cycles, so check the current rules against both the official portal and the Ministry of Education's notice each year. The other ways applications fail are collected in why Stipendium applications fail.

The motivation letter carries unusual weight at this level, because it is where the link between your bachelor's and this specific programme is made or missed (writing a scholarship motivation letter, SOP, motivation letter and personal statement). Referees need lead time and specific instructions (the recommendation letter).

Entry is measured in credits, not years

At master's level the question is not how many years you studied. It is how much study that was — in other words, ECTS credits.

A Bangladeshi four-year honours degree is roughly 240 ECTS, and most European master's programmes ask for at least 180. So a four-year honours is not merely acceptable, it is an advantage. The problem case is the three-year pass degree at roughly 180 ECTS: it meets the requirement on paper, but evaluators place a pass degree below honours, and the file is refused quietly and without a reason being given. The safest fix is one most people already have available — a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top, which lifts the total comfortably (three-year pass versus four-year honours, a second bachelor's or a master's).

There is one task here worth doing before you pay any application fee: ask the specific department, in writing, whether it accepts 180 ECTS. That answer is not on the university's general page and it differs between departments in the same institution.

On grades, there is no official universal conversion from a Bangladeshi CGPA to a European one, so treat a perfectly precise conversion as a warning sign. The working rule across our nine countries is that 3.0 out of 4.0 is a common threshold, 3.5 and above is competitive for scholarships, and 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully rather than giving up (CGPA to European grades, a low CGPA and Europe). Alongside the grade, subject match carries close to equal weight at master's: the department is checking whether your bachelor's courses actually build the foundation its programme assumes.

English: 6.0 at master's, sometimes 6.5

Hungary has no national band, because no authority has published one. Across the programmes we work with, master's entry is typically 6.0 overall, sometimes 6.5, against 5.5 and sometimes 5.0 at bachelor's. Treat that as a planning floor rather than a promise, and remember the binding number is always on the individual course page.

Hungary is unusually open about the alternatives. Some programmes accept a Medium of Instruction letter, and many ask for no certificate at all because they run their own English test or an online interview (studying in Hungary without IELTS, the MOI certificate, which universities accept an MOI letter). The door is real, but it is opened by a department, not by the country, so find the specific programme that offers it before you build a plan on it (the online English interview).

Entrance examinations and interviews — at master's too

Entrance examinations are normal in Hungary, and this is the single biggest surprise for Bangladeshi applicants. Many programmes, Stipendium Hungaricum especially, decide with a written or online test, an interview, or both, rather than by reading a transcript. Medical and technical faculties are the most consistent about it.

At master's the difference is in the questions. At bachelor's the test covers general subjects; at master's the questions come out of your own bachelor's discipline — which is precisely where a two or three-year gap since graduation shows. If you finished in 2022 and are applying now, this is revision work, not a memory test.

Three things make this stage manageable.

  1. 1The examination belongs to the faculty, not to a national examining body. So there is no single date, no single syllabus, and a score cannot be carried to another university.
  2. 2Ask the department for its published format on the day you shortlist it. We deliberately print no topic list, pass mark or examination date here, because those vary by programme and by year, and an invented detail is worse than no detail.
  3. 3An online test is still a test. Budget for a quiet room, stable internet and the fixed time slot (preparing for the interview).

Which institution is strong in what, and which faculties examine, is where the shortlist starts: choosing a Hungarian university, with separate guides to Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and BME in Budapest.

Paperwork: the step that genuinely got easier

Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force from 30 March 2025, and Hungary accepts an apostille. That replaces the old consular legalisation chain with a single certificate. It is worth stating plainly because three of our nine countries — Denmark, Greece and Finland — objected under Article 12 and still require the full chain (who refuses Bangladesh's apostille).

The order still matters, and skipping a step sends the file back: collect the originals, education board verification, attestation, the apostille, then certified translation (attestation and apostille in order). Attestation, translation and legalisation together run about BDT 10,000 to 30,000, and courier to Europe BDT 4,000 to 9,000.

Master's applicants have one extra job. Departments frequently want course descriptions or the syllabus alongside the transcript, because they have to verify the subject match themselves (course descriptions and syllabi). Universities take time to issue those, so if January is the target this starts in October. The five gates for admission and the permit are laid out together in Hungary's entry requirements.

Money, the visa and the residence permit

The annual self-funded figures are in the table above. Add university application fees of EUR 100 to 150 per application, a Type D visa fee and VFS charge of roughly EUR 110 together, and Schengen health insurance with EUR 30,000 of cover. The whole arithmetic is in what studying in Hungary costs and is education in Hungary free, and the city-by-city difference in studying in Budapest.

Proof of funds is a separate calculation, and it is not a fee — it is not deposited and it is not spent. The working figure is about EUR 6,000 for the year, roughly HUF 200,000 a month or about EUR 500, while families are in practice asked to evidence EUR 6,000 to 8,000, and no blocked account is required. The honest condition: Hungary's immigration authority publishes no fixed amount at all, it tests whether you can meet living costs, a return journey and medical expenses from lawful income — so showing more is safer (proof of funds for Hungary).

The file is submitted at VFS Global in Dhaka, so you do not travel to India, but the decision is taken in New Delhi at the mission responsible for Bangladesh, and the residence permit itself is decided by OIF (where Bangladeshi students apply, the Hungarian student visa). Nobody can give you a reliable number of days. What is law is that a complete application must be decided within a maximum of 90 days, and that clock starts when the file is complete, not when it is handed in (how long it takes). It is cheaper to read the common failures before you file than after (why Hungarian student visas are refused).

Work, life after graduation, and residence

Part-time work is permitted on a student residence permit; that much is established. But we are not printing a weekly hours figure, and why not is the useful part: a completely new immigration law took effect on 1 January 2024, and most numbers still circulating online were written under the old framework. The limit is a condition of your permit, so relying on a wrong figure risks your permission to stay. The answer for your case comes from OIF and your university's international office, in writing (student work rules in Hungary).

Master's students do have one real advantage that undergraduates do not: lab and research assistant roles, and internships inside their own discipline. Outside the campus the barrier is not law but language, because nearly every customer-facing job expects Hungarian (finding a part-time job).

After graduation there is a 9-month job-seeking residence permit — time to look for work, not a guarantee of it. And the part worth knowing before the money is spent: years on a student permit do not count toward Hungary's three-year national permanent residence route at all, while for EU long-term residence and citizenship study years count at half (staying on after study). The return here is the degree, not a passport.

Who a Hungarian master's is wrong for

  • Anyone planning to pay tuition out of part-time earnings. The arithmetic above does not work that way, and for Hungary the reliable hours figure is not even published.
  • Anyone whose real goal is fast permanent residence. See the residence arithmetic above; this is the slow road.
  • Anyone who cannot reliably sit an entrance examination or a live interview. Where a programme runs one, it is not optional.
  • Anyone arriving in April expecting to start that September on a scholarship. That cycle's funding closed in January. The self-funded route is still open, and the two are not the same thing.

For the comparison that usually settles the decision, see Italy versus Hungary and what Hungary is actually good for; the same decision in Italy looks quite different (a master's in Italy).

What to do next

  1. 1Open the official portal in September of the year before you intend to go — that month, not when you feel prepared.
  2. 2Send two emails today: does the department accept 180 ECTS, and what is its published entrance examination format.
  3. 3Start the document chain at education board verification, because it is the one step no amount of money makes faster (the Hungary country guide).

Common questions

What is the first date I have to hit for a master's in Hungary?+

The Stipendium Hungaricum application date, which normally closes in mid-January for a cycle that starts teaching the following September. That is a gap of about eight months between the deadline and the first class, and it is the single most common reason a good candidate misses Hungary: they are not rejected, they find the programme in April. Self-funded admission runs far later because each university sets its own dates. So if you want the scholarship your real deadline is January; if you do not, Hungary's calendar is one of the most flexible of the nine. The exact date shifts slightly each cycle, so confirm it on the official Call for Applications.

What does Stipendium Hungaricum actually cover at master's level?+

Full tuition, a stipend of about EUR 110 a month at bachelor's and master's level, a free dormitory place or a monthly housing allowance, and health insurance. The PhD stipend is set differently. Put that against the self-funded alternative and the shape is clear: public tuition would be EUR 0 to 5,000 a year and living costs EUR 400 to 600 a month, so the scholarship removes tuition entirely and covers part of the month. It does not cover the whole month, which is why students who arrive believing they will need nothing from home are caught out in the first semester.

Is Stipendium harder to win at master's level than at bachelor's?+

No authority publishes success rates by level, so anyone quoting you a percentage has invented it, and we will not either. What is structurally true is that everyone in the master's field already holds a complete degree, so the things that separate applicants are the transcript, the subject match, the motivation letter and the entrance examination rather than an HSC result. That changes what preparation means, and it is why the rest of this guide is organised around those four things.

Can I do a master's in Hungary with a three-year pass degree?+

Sometimes, but treat it as the first thing to check rather than the last. A Bangladeshi three-year bachelor's is roughly 180 ECTS, which is the bare minimum most European master's programmes look at, while a four-year honours is roughly 240 ECTS and travels almost everywhere. The safest fix is one most applicants already have available: a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top, which lifts the total credits comfortably and settles the argument before it starts. Ask the specific department in writing whether it accepts 180 ECTS before you pay an application fee, because the answer is not on the university's general page and it varies by department.

What IELTS score do I need for a master's in Hungary?+

There is no national band, because no Hungarian authority publishes one. Across the programmes we work with, master's entry is typically 6.0 overall and sometimes 6.5, against 5.5 and sometimes 5.0 at bachelor's. The number that binds you is on the individual course page, and a department can ask for more than the university's general page suggests. Hungary is unusually open about alternatives: some programmes accept a Medium of Instruction letter, and many run their own English test or an online interview instead of asking for a certificate at all.

Are there entrance examinations at master's level too?+

Yes, and for Bangladeshi applicants this is the biggest surprise in the whole route. Entrance examinations and interviews are normal in Hungary, and at master's they are more noticeable because the questions come from your own bachelor's subject rather than from general knowledge. The examination belongs to the faculty rather than to a national examining body, so there is no single date, no single syllabus, and a score cannot be carried to another university. Ask the department for its published format on the day you shortlist it, and if you finished your degree two or three years ago, plan to revise rather than to remember.

What does a self-funded master's in Hungary cost for a year?+

Public programme tuition runs EUR 0 to 5,000 a year and living costs EUR 400 to 600 a month. That living band is national, and where you sit inside it is decided mostly by whether you are in Budapest or in a smaller university town. On top of that come university application fees of EUR 100 to 150 per application, a Type D visa fee and VFS charge of roughly EUR 110 together, and Schengen health insurance with EUR 30,000 of cover. Proof of funds is a separate calculation and is not a cost, because it is money you show rather than money you spend.

How much do I need to show as proof of funds, and is a blocked account required?+

No blocked account is required. Our country guide's working figure for a self-funded year is about EUR 6,000, which is roughly HUF 200,000 a month or about EUR 500, and in practice families are asked to evidence something closer to EUR 6,000 to 8,000. There is an honest condition attached: Hungary's immigration authority does not publish a fixed amount at all. It checks whether you can meet living costs, a return journey and medical expenses from lawful income, so showing more is safer than showing exactly the guide figure. Every euro amount here is an approximate conversion from the forint and moves with the exchange rate.

If I win the scholarship, do I still need proof of funds for the visa?+

Less of it, but build the file assuming you will still have to evidence part of your own costs. The award letter proves tuition and a defined monthly amount; anything beyond that is yours to show. The trap is a timing one that catches people every year: scholarship results arrive in June or July, while a visa file for a September start is best submitted by June. Do not pause your document chain waiting for the result, because the two clocks run almost on top of each other.

How many hours can I work while doing a master's in Hungary?+

Part-time work is permitted on a student residence permit, and that much is established. The exact weekly hours figure is not something we will print, because a completely new immigration law took effect in Hungary on 1 January 2024 and most of the numbers still circulating online were written under the old framework. An hours limit is a condition of your residence permit rather than advice, so relying on a wrong figure risks your permission to stay, not just a job. The authority that answers for your case is OIF, alongside your university's international office, and you should get the answer in writing.

Can I stay in Hungary after the master's?+

There is a 9-month job-seeking residence permit after graduation, which is time to look for work rather than a guarantee of it. Two facts are worth knowing before you spend the money: years on a student permit do not count at all toward Hungary's three-year national permanent residence route, and for EU long-term residence and citizenship study years count at half. A master's in Hungary is an excellent education decision and a slow immigration decision, and it is more useful to hear that now than after two years.

Can I start a master's in the February intake?+

On some programmes, but not in the way most readers hope. Starting in February in Hungary usually means applying in September to November of the previous year, which is earlier than the January deadline you are worried about missing rather than later. The list of programmes is smaller and the scholarship does not run on that cycle. It is not the next deadline; it is an earlier deadline for a later start.
