What an evaluator is trying to do
A transcript tells a European evaluator that you passed a course called Advanced Database Systems and got a B. It does not tell them how many hours that course ran for, whether it was assessed by examination or by project, or what was in it. Without that, they cannot convert it into ECTS credits and they cannot check whether you have covered a prerequisite.
That is the entire purpose of a course description set. It is the bridge between a Bangladeshi transcript and the European credit system.
Where it is actually required
| Where | What is asked for | When |
|---|---|---|
| Italy — CIMEA comparability | Transcript, degree certificate, sometimes course descriptions | Before or during the visa file |
| Finland — university prerequisite check | Course descriptions for the subject area | During application assessment |
| Sweden — programme-specific eligibility | Course syllabi for named prerequisite subjects | After the central application, at the university's request |
| Denmark — qualification assessment | Transcript plus, for exemptions, course content | At application or enrolment |
| Any credit transfer or exemption request | Full syllabus for each course you want counted | After enrolment |
Two honest qualifications. First, most applicants never need the full set — a transcript and degree certificate carry an ordinary undergraduate application. Second, when it is needed you cannot produce it quickly, which is why it belongs in your planning even if it never gets requested.
The three-year bachelor problem
This is the single most common reason a Bangladeshi applicant is asked for syllabi. A European master's normally expects 180 ECTS behind it, which is three years of full-time European study. A Bangladeshi four-year honours degree usually maps across; a three-year pass degree frequently does not, and the evaluator's route to a decision runs through hours and content rather than years.
If you hold a three-year degree, assume you will be asked, and read three-year versus four-year bachelor degrees before you apply.
What a usable course description contains
For each course on your transcript:
- Course code and full title, matching the transcript exactly
- Credit value in your university's own system, with the system stated
- Total contact hours, split into lecture, tutorial and laboratory where relevant
- A content summary, three to eight lines, listing the topics actually covered
- Assessment method and weighting, for example 70 per cent final examination, 30 per cent continuous assessment
- The semester and academic year in which you took it
⚠️ Content summaries that read like marketing copy are useless to an evaluator. "This course develops critical thinking" tells them nothing; "covers relational algebra, normalisation to BCNF, transaction management and indexing" tells them everything.
Getting it from a Bangladeshi university
The document exists — every accredited programme has an approved curriculum — but the copy you need is a certified one, and the process is administrative rather than academic.
- 1Ask the registrar, not the department. Departments give you a photocopy of the prospectus. Only the registrar's office can issue a certified set with a seal.
- 2Ask for it page-stamped and signed. An evaluator wants each page stamped, or at minimum a signed and sealed covering page listing the number of pages.
- 3Order it with your transcript, in the same visit. Doing it twice doubles the queue.
- 4Expect weeks, not days. Public universities and the National University are slower than private ones. Ask what the office's own stated turnaround is and get it in writing.
- 5Order two certified sets. A set sent abroad does not come back, and a second application in the same cycle will need another.
For National University and private university graduates the verification and attestation chain sits on top of this — the sequence is in attestation for private and National University graduates.
Translation
If the syllabus is in Bangla, it needs a certified English translation. Translate the whole set, not selected pages, and keep the original bound with the translation. Half a translated syllabus reads as selective disclosure. The Dhaka process is covered in certified translation of documents.
What to do next
- 1Count how many courses are on your transcript. That is how many descriptions you will eventually need.
- 2Go to the registrar with a written request naming the certified format above.
- 3Scan the set once, properly, at the resolution described in scanning and file size rules.
- 4Keep a digital copy permanently. You will need it again for credit transfer, for a second degree, and sometimes for professional registration years later.

Common questions
Does every European application need course descriptions?+
No. Most undergraduate applications and many master's applications are decided on the transcript and degree certificate alone. Course descriptions are requested when the evaluator needs to convert credits or verify a prerequisite, which happens most often to three-year bachelor holders and to anyone requesting an exemption.
Can I use the syllabus PDF from my university's website?+
For an informal check, yes. For an evaluation, no — the evaluator needs a copy certified by the registrar with a seal and signature. A downloaded PDF has no issuing authority attached to it and will be sent back.
How long does the registrar take to issue a certified syllabus set?+
It varies widely between institutions and there is no published national standard. Private universities are generally faster than public ones and the National University is the slowest. Ask the office for its own stated turnaround in writing and start the request months before your deadline.
Do course descriptions help a three-year bachelor become eligible for a master's?+
They can, because the decision rests on credits and content rather than on the number of years, but there is no guarantee. Some countries and some universities apply a firm 180 ECTS rule that no amount of documentation changes. Check the specific programme's admission page before spending on certification.
