This is the most common and least discussed reason Bangladeshi master's applications fail. The student has a good CGPA, a good IELTS score and a good SOP, and the rejection says "does not meet the entry requirements" with no explanation. The cause is usually the structure of the degree, not the ability of the applicant.
ECTS in one minute
ECTS is the European credit system. Roughly:
- One full-time academic year = 60 ECTS
- Bachelor's = 180 ECTS (3 years) to 240 ECTS (4 years)
- Master's = 60 ECTS (1 year) to 120 ECTS (2 years)
So "a bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS" is really asking: have you completed at least three years of full-time higher education?

Why the pass degree causes trouble: European credential evaluators distinguish pass from honours. Country profiles maintained by European recognition bodies place the Bangladeshi pass bachelor's below honours level — so even though the paper says three years, it may not be treated as equivalent to 180 ECTS.
How to find out where you stand
Three steps, in order:
- 1Read the programme's admission requirements page — it states the ECTS or years required, and often includes country-specific guidance.
- 2Look for the university's country page — Sweden's central admissions service, for example, publishes specific instructions for Bangladesh naming which qualifications are acceptable.
- 3Email the admissions office. This is the least-used and most effective step. Write: *"I hold a 3-year Bachelor (pass) from X University, Bangladesh, followed by a 1-year Master's. Would this meet the entry requirement of 180 ECTS?"* You will get an answer in writing, and it is the only reliable one.
Four ways to close a gap
1. Finish a Bangladeshi master's. A one-year master's brings the total to four years and usually resolves the issue. For anyone who has already completed a pass degree, this is the simplest route.
2. Apply where 180 ECTS is enough. Many programmes in Italy, Hungary, Cyprus and Bulgaria accept a three-year bachelor's. The Nordics and Denmark are comparatively strict.
3. A bridging or pre-master's programme. Some universities offer a 30–60 ECTS preparatory year. It costs time and money but opens the door.

Two expensive mistakes
⚠️ Paying application fees on an agent's assurance. Nobody can answer this question except the admissions office in writing — not an agent, not a Facebook group, not us. The verification is free and takes one email.
⚠️ A transcript with no credit hours. Many Bangladeshi transcripts show grades but not credits, which leaves the evaluator unable to compute ECTS — and you do not get the benefit of the doubt.
