In short: HSC qualifies you. Plan on IELTS 6.0, verified funds, and eighteen months from result to first lecture. Italy, Bulgaria and Greece are the cheapest routes; Hungary funds Bachelor's degrees through Stipendium Hungaricum; Finland admits through an entrance exam. Do not spend the year after HSC "seeing what happens" — that year becomes a gap you must explain.
In Bangladesh the assumption persists that people go abroad for a Master's. Going at Bachelor's level has real advantages: a four-year European degree, time to learn the local language, and entry to Europe's job market at graduation rather than as a late arrival.
Is HSC enough?
Yes. European universities require twelve years of schooling for Bachelor's admission, and HSC, Alim and A-Levels all meet it. The details:
- Italy requires twelve years of prior schooling; some programmes have entrance tests (IMAT for medicine)
- Finland's universities of applied sciences admit through an international entrance exam or SAT — preparation is needed beyond the HSC result
- Hungary, Cyprus, Malta, Greece and Bulgaria admit directly on HSC plus English evidence — the most straightforward route
- A higher GPA improves both scholarship and visa prospects, but real options exist below 3.5
What a Bachelor's costs, country by country (2026)
| Country | Tuition per year | Funds to show |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | EUR 0–4,000 (income-based) | EUR 10,179.85 per year |
| Bulgaria | EUR 3,000–5,000 | About EUR 7,440 per year |
| Greece | EUR 1,500–4,000 | Plan on about EUR 7,200 per year |
| Hungary | EUR 0 (on scholarship) to 5,000 | About EUR 6,000 per year |
| Cyprus | EUR 3,500–7,000 | EUR 7,000 per year |
| Malta | EUR 5,000–11,000 | About EUR 11,400 per year |
| Finland | EUR 6,000–13,000 (50–100% scholarships possible) | EUR 9,600 per year |
Every figure comes from the relevant authority's latest published rate; each is explained on the country guides.
The eighteen-month timeline for a September start
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Right after the HSC exams | Begin IELTS preparation — the biggest time saver |
| Result month | Collect certificates; start the attestation chain |
| October–December | Shortlist countries and programmes; sit IELTS |
| January–March | Apply (Finland's joint application is in January) |
| April–June | Offer letters; organise funds |
| June–August | Visa file and submission |
| September | Classes begin |
The most expensive mistake: the year after HSC spent "seeing what happens". If nothing is done in that year, it returns later as an unexplained gap in a visa file. Even if you are undecided, sit IELTS — the score is valid for two years.
Bachelor's abroad, or Master's after a Bangladeshi degree?
An honest comparison:
- Bachelor's abroad — higher total cost over three or four years, but you graduate with a European degree, the language and a network, and the residence clock starts earlier
- Master's abroad — lower cost over one or two years, with the Bachelor's done at home; settling in a new country begins after 25
If the family can sustain roughly BDT 8–12 lakh a year, the Bachelor's route deserves consideration; if not, a strong Bachelor's at home followed by a scholarship-funded Master's is an equally respectable path.

Common questions
What HSC result do I need for a Bachelor's in Europe?+
Most countries set no GPA cut-off — passing HSC is the minimum. A GPA above 4.0 sharply improves scholarship chances, especially for Stipendium Hungaricum and Finnish university scholarships. Below 3.5, flexible destinations such as Cyprus, Greece and Bulgaria remain realistic.
Can I do a Bachelor's without IELTS?+
Some countries accept alternatives — a Medium of Instruction certificate, Duolingo, or the university's own English test. At Bachelor's level an MOI does not work if your HSC was in Bengali medium, so preparing for IELTS 6.0 is the safe assumption. Our guide to studying in Europe without IELTS covers the alternatives in detail.
Is being under 18 a problem?+
Admission is possible, but under-18 applicants need extra paperwork — parental consent, notarised guardianship documents — and some countries have additional dormitory rules. At the normal HSC age of 17–18 this is a small procedural step, not a barrier.
