Is education free in Hungary for international students?

Hungary appears on every list of cheap places to study, and a lot of those lists say "free". Both halves of that are traceable to the same thing: one very good government scholarship, quoted as though it were the default condition of studying in the country. It is not the default. It is a competition with a January deadline.

The three ways a Hungarian degree gets paid for

The first row is the one that produces the confusion. Hungary does fund university places, and the coverage of that is what filters out into English-language articles as "Hungary is free". Those places belong to a category a Bangladeshi applicant is not in.

What Stipendium Hungaricum actually covers

It is a Hungarian government scholarship operating through bilateral agreements, with places allocated to Bangladesh among other partner countries. When it comes through it covers:

• Tuition in full, for the duration of the degree.
• A monthly stipend, which is a living contribution rather than a salary.
• A contribution to accommodation, either a dormitory place or a housing allowance.
• A medical insurance contribution.

That is a genuinely transformative package for a Bangladeshi family, and it is why the programme deserves the attention it gets.

The four honest caveats

It closes in January for a September start. Almost every strong applicant who misses out simply began too late — after the deadline, the next opportunity is a full year away.

It requires a nomination from the Bangladeshi sending partner, not only an application to the Hungarian portal. There are two submissions, on two systems, and a candidate who completes one of them is not a candidate. The current sending partner and its procedure are named on the official portal linked below; verify it there each cycle rather than relying on an older article.

No acceptance rate is published. Neither the Hungarian side nor the Bangladeshi side publishes how many apply or how many are selected. Anyone quoting you a percentage has invented it. We will not, and you should treat any agency that does as a warning sign.

The stipend is not a full budget. It contributes to living costs; it does not cover the flight, the insurance, the Dhaka-side attestation chain, or the funds you may still be asked to evidence at the residence-permit stage.

What self-funding actually costs

If the scholarship does not come through, Hungary is still one of the more affordable of the nine.

Only Bulgaria lives more cheaply among the nine. Medicine and dentistry sit far above the tuition band above and should be priced separately. Full detail is in what a year in Hungary costs.

The money you need even with a full scholarship

A scholarship removes the recurring cost. It does not remove the cost of getting there, and the two are separated by several weeks.

The last two rows are the trap. Stipend payments begin once you have arrived, enrolled and completed local registration, so there is a gap — commonly several weeks — during which a scholarship holder is funding themselves in a foreign country. Arriving with nothing because "the scholarship covers it" is one of the more distressing situations we see, and it is entirely avoidable: carry enough for six to eight weeks. Medicine is a separate market

Hungarian medical and dental degrees are internationally known and priced accordingly, well above the EUR 0-5,000 band on this page, and Stipendium places in medicine are far scarcer than in other fields. If medicine is your plan, price it from the specific faculty's own fee page and treat everything else here as background rather than as your budget.

If you miss Stipendium

Hungarian universities run their own smaller schemes — partial tuition discounts, merit awards at admission, and in some cases fee reductions for continuing students with strong results. They will not replace Stipendium, but they will move a self-funded budget by a useful amount. The realistic list is in Hungarian university scholarships beyond Stipendium.

The other schemes you may see named — the Diaspora Scholarship and the Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People — are real Hungarian government programmes with specific eligibility conditions that most Bangladeshi applicants do not meet. One currency note

Hungary bills in forint, not euro. Tuition, dormitory fees and rent are set in HUF, so every euro figure on this page is a conversion that moves with the exchange rate. A budget fixed in euro in October can be several per cent wrong by the spring instalment.

The short answer

Hungary is free if, and only if, you win Stipendium Hungaricum. Self-funded, it costs EUR 4,800 to 12,200 for a first year, which is cheap by European standards but is not nothing. Apply for the scholarship properly and on time, and build the budget as though you will not get it — a plan that only works with a competitive award is a plan with a single point of failure.
