What is left after Stipendium
Stipendium Hungaricum is the one Hungarian scholarship that genuinely funds a degree - tuition, stipend, accommodation, insurance. If you have it, this article is not for you.
If you missed the January deadline or were not selected, Hungary is still one of the cheapest realistic routes into the EU, and there is a second tier of money that almost nobody writes about because it is administered university by university and never advertised centrally.
What Hungary costs self-funded
| Programme type | Typical annual tuition |
|---|---|
| Business, IT, engineering, social sciences | EUR 3,000 to 6,000 |
| Sciences and technical programmes at larger universities | EUR 4,000 to 8,000 |
| Medicine, dentistry, veterinary | EUR 15,000 to 25,000 |
| Living costs, Budapest | EUR 450 to 750 a month |
| Living costs, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs | EUR 350 to 600 a month |
Those figures are indicative and republished by each university every year. The medicine row is the reason to read the regulated professions warning before committing: a European medical degree is not by itself a licence to practise anywhere, including Bangladesh, and registration is a separate process in every country.
The four things universities actually offer
1. Entrance merit discounts. Awarded at admission, from entrance examination results or academic record. Typically 10 to 50 percent of tuition. Rarely advertised prominently; frequently mentioned only in the fee regulation document.
2. Continuing-student merit scholarships. This is the realistic one. Perform well in your first year and apply for the university's own merit award from year two. Because the competition is other enrolled students rather than the global applicant pool, the odds are far better than any admission-stage scheme - and unlike an entrance award, you control the input.
3. Payment discounts. Many Hungarian universities charge less for a full academic year paid up front than for two semester payments. It is not framed as a scholarship and it does not appear on marketing pages, but it is money. Read the fee regulation, not the programme brochure.
4. Government schemes other than Stipendium. Hungary runs additional programmes with their own eligibility rules, including schemes restricted by community or by descent. Whether Bangladesh appears in any given call varies, and calls change annually - check the official portal rather than an agent's summary.
A worked comparison
| Route | Tuition paid, per year | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stipendium Hungaricum | Zero, plus stipend and housing | January deadline, highly competitive |
| Self-funded, no discount | EUR 4,000 | Base case |
| With a 25 percent entrance discount | EUR 3,000 | Saves EUR 1,000 |
| With a 50 percent year-two merit award | EUR 2,000 | Earned by performance |
| With a full-year payment discount | Varies, often a few percent | Read the fee regulation |
The point of the table is proportion. A discount improves an affordable plan. It does not make an unaffordable plan affordable, and it does not change what the immigration authority requires you to show.
What none of it changes
⚠️ A tuition discount does not affect the residence permit. Hungary's immigration authority assesses whether you can support yourself for the period of stay, and it looks at living costs and remaining tuition, not at what you were originally quoted. A 50 percent discount reduces your bill; it does not reduce the funds you must evidence for living costs. The general shape is in the proof of funds guide.
Reading the offer carefully
Hungarian offer letters and agent messages both use the word "scholarship" loosely, and it means at least three different things:
| What it says | What it may actually be |
|---|---|
| "Scholarship awarded" | A percentage discount on tuition |
| "Scholarship available" | A scheme you may apply to later, with no award yet |
| "Fee waiver" | Sometimes only for one semester, or one year |
| "Full scholarship" | Occasionally still excludes the registration and service fees |
Before accepting anything, get in writing: the exact amount in euros, whether it applies for the whole degree or one year, what conditions renew it, and what fees remain. If an agent cannot produce that from the university in writing, treat the claim as unverified. The general method is in how to read a scholarship advertisement.
What to do now
- 1Open the fee regulation document, not the programme page, for each university on your list.
- 2Ask the admissions office directly, by email, what discounts exist at entry and after year one. The written answer is your record.
- 3Apply to Stipendium Hungaricum anyway for the following cycle, even while enrolling self-funded - the deadline is in January, eight months ahead.
- 4Build the budget on full fees and treat any discount as a reduction you may receive. If it only works with the discount, it does not work.

Common questions
What scholarships exist in Hungary apart from Stipendium Hungaricum?+
Universities run their own partial tuition discounts, typically 10 to 50 percent, decided at admission on entrance results or after the first year on grade point average. Many also charge less for a full year paid up front. These are discounts rather than funding, and they are administered university by university.
Which Hungarian scholarship is easiest to actually get?+
The continuing-student merit award from year two, because you compete against other enrolled students rather than the global applicant pool and you control the input, which is your first-year performance. Ask the admissions office what the threshold is before you enrol.
Does a tuition discount help with the Hungarian residence permit?+
Only indirectly. The immigration authority assesses whether you can support yourself for the period of stay, looking at living costs and any remaining tuition. A discount reduces the bill but does not reduce the living-cost funds you must evidence.
An agent says I have been awarded a scholarship. How do I check?+
Ask for it in writing from the university, naming the exact euro amount, whether it covers the whole degree or one year, the renewal conditions, and which fees are excluded. The word scholarship is used loosely in this market and frequently means a partial discount for a single year.
