Stipendium Hungaricum for Bangladeshi students: what it covers and how to win it

In short: A Hungarian government scholarship with places allocated to Bangladesh, covering full tuition, a monthly stipend, accommodation support and medical insurance. Applications close in January for a September start. The most common reason a competitive applicant misses out is finding it too late.

Genuinely full scholarships available to Bangladeshi students are rare. Most "scholarships" advertised are tuition discounts of 10–50%, which help but do not change whether a plan is affordable. Stipendium Hungaricum is different: it covers the tuition *and* pays you to live.

What you actually get

• Tuition — covered in full for the duration of the programme.
• A monthly stipend — the amount is set in forint and revised periodically; the current figure is on the official portal. It is enough to live carefully in Hungary.
• Accommodation — either a place in a hall of residence or a monthly contribution toward private housing.
• Medical insurance — covered.

What it does not cover: your flight, your visa fee, document attestation, and the gap between the stipend and a comfortable standard of living. Budget a few thousand euro of your own for the first year even with a full award.

Why the odds are better than they look

Stipendium Hungaricum is a bilateral programme. Hungary agrees a number of places with each partner country, and Bangladesh is one of them. You are competing against other Bangladeshi applicants for a Bangladesh allocation, not against the entire world for a global pool.

That is a materially different proposition from Erasmus Mundus, where a Bangladeshi applicant competes with strong candidates from every continent.

The timeline that decides everything

Eight months between deadline and first lecture. Working backwards, document attestation needs to start in October at the latest — the board or university verification, Ministry of Education, MOFA and embassy chain takes four to eight weeks and cannot be compressed.

A student who decides in June to apply for that September has missed it. A student who decides in June to apply for the *following* September has an ideal amount of time.

How to apply

1. Check eligibility and the programme list. Fields available change between cycles. Confirm your target programme is offered under the scholarship this year.

2. Register on the official portal and complete the application. You may choose up to two programmes, ranked.

3. Upload the documents. Typically: academic transcripts and certificates (attested), evidence of English proficiency, a motivation letter, a medical certificate, a copy of your passport, and references where the programme asks for them.

4. Complete the Bangladesh-side nomination step. The sending partner in Bangladesh runs its own process; check the current arrangement on the official portal each cycle, since the responsible body and its procedure can change.

5. Attend the interview or entrance assessment if your programme requires one.

The motivation letter

This is where comparable applicants separate. The structure that works:

• Why this field, opening with something concrete you have done rather than a childhood ambition.
• What you have already done in it — the thesis, the project, the internship, named specifically.
• Why this programme at this Hungarian university — actual modules, an actual research group. Generic praise for Hungary is the most common weakness.
• Why Hungary — and here you can be direct about the scholarship, alongside an academic reason.
• What you will do afterwards. Hungary is investing public money; a plausible plan matters.

Keep it to one page unless told otherwise. Write it yourself — you will be asked about it at interview.

Mistakes that cost people a place

Finding out too late. Overwhelmingly the most common. The deadline is eight months before the intake.

Starting attestation in December. The documents will not be ready. Start in October.

A generic motivation letter. Reviewers read a great many. One that could have been submitted to any country or any programme reads exactly like that.

Choosing two programmes with no connection to your background. The pairing should look considered. Two unrelated fields suggests you are chasing the scholarship rather than the subject.

Assuming you have won it. Have a parallel plan — self-funded Hungary at €0–5,000 tuition, or Italy, Greece or Bulgaria. Students who apply only to Stipendium Hungaricum and are unsuccessful lose the entire year, because by the time results arrive in spring, several other countries have also closed.

Is Hungary itself the right choice?

Worth asking separately from the money.

In its favour: long-established universities, particularly strong in medicine, dentistry and engineering; Schengen membership; low living costs at €400–600 a month; a nine-month post-study job-seeking permit.

Against: Hungarian is a difficult language and little spoken elsewhere, which limits part-time work and local employment; costs are billed in forint so the euro figures move with the exchange rate; and the graduate job market is smaller than Denmark's or Finland's.

For a student whose binding constraint is money and whose results are strong, Stipendium Hungaricum is the best value available on this list. For a student whose priority is building a career in Europe afterwards, Denmark and Finland remain the stronger routes even at a higher cost.
