Which Hungarian universities are actually worth applying to from Bangladesh

The short answer

There is no single best university in Hungary for a Bangladeshi student, and the ranking you were about to search for will not produce one. A world ranking is built from research output, citations and reputation surveys — none of which changes what you are asked to sit, what you pay, or whether your file arrives in time.

Four things do, and in Hungary they are unusually concrete.

  1. 1Does the faculty make you sit an entrance examination, and can you pass it? The exam belongs to the faculty, not a national testing body: no single date, no single syllabus, no score you can carry elsewhere.
  2. 2Is the programme in the current Stipendium Hungaricum call? Here, choosing an institution and applying for the scholarship are one act rather than two.
  3. 3Is the degree genuinely taught in English, and how will you evidence your own English? Across Hungarian programme pages we observe roughly IELTS 5.5 for bachelor's and 6.0 for master's — our observation, never a national rule — and several institutions run their own test instead.
  4. 4Budapest, or a regional university town? Living costs run EUR 400 to 600 a month nationally, and the city decides where inside that band you sit every month for the whole degree.

Behind all four sits the calendar: two intakes, September and February, and for a September start the scholarship application falls in the winter before.

Why this is one page and not fifteen

Some sites run a page for every Hungarian university with a recognisable name. We do not: when we measured what Bangladeshi students type, each institution name drew one or two searches and the question underneath them was the same. The four that earn their own guide have one.

The four Hungarian institutions we cover in depth

InstitutionCityGenuinely strong inCity cost levelOur deeper guide
University of DebrecenDebrecenMedicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English; engineering, agriculture, IT, businessBelow BudapestDebrecen
University of SzegedSzegedMedicine, pharmacy, chemistry, biology, computer science; a major Stipendium hostBelow BudapestSzeged
University of PécsPécsEnglish-taught medicine with a long track record; health sciences, engineering, businessAmong the lowest in HungaryPécs
Budapest University of Technology (BME)BudapestCivil, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, architecture — no medicineThe highest in HungaryBME

City cost level is a position, not a price. The national band is EUR 400 to 600 a month; each place's real figure is in its own guide: Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs.

Notice what the table does not contain: a price. Three of these four run two price worlds under one name — an English-taught medical degree, quoted per programme and often in US dollars, and everything else. One figure for "studying at Debrecen" is how a family ends up with a number wrong by a factor: what studying in Hungary costs, the cheapest universities.

The entrance examination is the variable specific to Hungary

In several countries the admission test is national: one syllabus, one date, one score for several universities. Hungary does not work that way — the examination is set and marked by the faculty that will teach you.

Programme familyWhat admission usually turns onWhere the answer lives
Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy in EnglishA written and oral entrance examination in biology and chemistryThe medical faculty's admissions page
Engineering and computingTranscript with mathematics and physics weighted; an entry test or interview for many programmesThe programme page
Other bachelor's and master'sTranscript, sometimes an online interviewThe programme page
English evidenceAround IELTS 5.5 for bachelor's and 6.0 for master's on the pages we read, or the institution's own testThe programme page

Two things follow. You cannot revise for "the Hungarian entrance exam" in general — you revise for one faculty's paper, from the syllabus it publishes, and a second university means a second exam. And a shortlist should not rest on one exam: if all three choices are medical faculties testing biology and chemistry, one bad morning ends the year.

The English half is more flexible here than in most of our nine: institutions frequently accept their own online test or interview instead of a certificate — studying in Hungary without IELTS and the online English interview. Check an MOI letter against which universities accept one, ask for an exemption as the waiver guide describes, and read what your band means first.

Stipendium Hungaricum makes two decisions into one

In most countries you choose a university and then go looking for money. Hungary reverses it: the scholarship application is where you name the programmes, so the institution decision is taken inside the scholarship form, months before a self-funded applicant makes it. Four consequences follow.

  1. 1The call publishes which institutions and programmes take part. One that is not in the current call cannot be reached this way, whatever else is true about it.
  2. 2You name your choices in an order of preference. How many you may name, and the closing date, are in the call itself — read them there, not in an article, because those details move between years.
  3. 3There is a nomination step on the Bangladesh side and a selection step on the Hungarian side, so a strong file can still stop at the first gate: why applications fail.
  4. 4Applying is not funding. Until an award letter exists your file is a self-funded file, and pausing the bank paperwork while a result is pending is the most common self-inflicted wound here.

Our country guide publishes public tuition of EUR 0 to 5,000 a year, and EUR 0 is the scholarship end of that band rather than a normal outcome — so build the self-funded version in parallel: is education free in Hungary is the honest arithmetic, the Stipendium guide covers what it pays for, and scholarships beyond Stipendium covers the institutions' own awards, which fewer people apply to. Before believing an advertisement: how to read one, and finding scholarships without an agent.

Budapest or a regional town: the decision most people take by accident

Almost everyone pictures Budapest first and discovers the cost after the offer. These are the national monthly figures our country guide publishes.

What you pay for each monthThe national range
Accommodation, hostel or dormitoryEUR 120 to 300
FoodEUR 120 to 200
TransportEUR 15 to 35
Everything elseEUR 50 to 100
TotalEUR 400 to 600

Which end of each row you land on is mostly decided by the city: Budapest near the top, the regional towns near the bottom, and across a three-year bachelor's that gap is larger than the fee difference between most programmes. The local currency is the forint, so every euro figure here is an approximate conversion.

Budapest buys real things: the widest English-taught catalogue, the country's only substantial English-language job market and the largest Bangladeshi community. A regional town buys a lower total. Both are defensible; choosing by accident is not — compare the months in a student's monthly budget and Italy, Hungary or Bulgaria on a tight budget.

One thing must stay out of that calculation: part-time earnings. Hungary publishes no weekly hours figure at all, so anyone quoting you one has invented it. What is settled is in student work rules in Hungary.

How to check any Hungarian institution yourself

Most readers will consider an institution we have not covered, so here is the method rather than the list: five checks, each able to end the conversation on its own.

1. Is it a state-recognised Hungarian higher education institution?

Start at Study in Hungary (studyinhungary.hu), the government's own information service for international students, which lists the recognised institutions and their English-taught programmes. A name that does not appear there needs explaining before anything else — see checking a private university or college and checking that an offer letter is genuine. If your own degree is from a Bangladeshi private or National University, the question runs the other way too: are those degrees accepted.

2. Is the programme genuinely taught in English?

Read the language of instruction and the language of assessment separately — they are not always the same line, and a bilingual department is not an English-taught degree: checking that a programme is really taught in English and English-taught or local-language. Daily life: how much Hungarian you need — the classes can be in English, the landlord and the immigration office will not be.

3. What will it actually cost you?

Our country guide publishes EUR 0 to 5,000 a year for public tuition, and you should still read your own programme's number off the fee page. English-taught medicine, dentistry and pharmacy sit outside that band entirely — which is why two honest people describe Hungary's cost completely differently.

4. Is it in the Stipendium call, and when does that call close?

Find the programme on the official portal, note whether it is in the current call, and note its closing date separately from the university's own admission date. Where that route is closed, the self-funded arithmetic has to work alone. Many Hungarian applications are filed through DreamApply — the DreamApply guide explains the portal, and form mistakes that cost you covers what quietly ends a cycle.

5. Will your qualification be accepted, and in what form?

For a bachelor's the HSC is what is assessed, alongside your English evidence. For a master's the question is credits, not years: a three-year bachelor's is roughly 180 ECTS and a four-year roughly 240, and most European master's want at least 180 — so a four-year honours degree travels almost everywhere, while the three-year pass degree is the problem case (the comparison, how a CGPA converts). No official universal CGPA conversion exists; as a working rule 3.0 out of 4.0 is a common threshold, 3.5 and above is competitive for scholarships, and 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing carefully — the best of the nine with a low CGPA. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Hungary accepts an apostille.

If the name is the reason you picked it, read this twice

For most Bangladeshi students the binding constraints are money and timing, not reputation: entrance examinations, scholarship calls and monthly costs decide the year.

Choosing on reputation is how people end up in the capital, in the highest cost band, holding a self-funded offer for a programme that was never in the scholarship call — then learn that the same degree, in the same language, was running in a town at a materially lower monthly total, at a major scholarship host. Prestige is the fifth thing to optimise, not the first: if two options come out level on the four checks, take the better-known one.

Who should ignore this page

If your funding is unconstrained and you are chasing a named research group, choose the department.

If you are applying for medicine, the ordinary rules are not the binding ones: the entrance examination is real, the price world is different, and a Hungarian medical degree is a qualification, not a licence to practise in Bangladesh — settle that with your family before the first payment.

If your plan depends on working through the gap, Hungary is a poor bet: outside Budapest the English-language job market is thin and there is no published hours figure to plan against. If you want an English-speaking life rather than English classes, read what Hungary is actually good for, and Italy versus Hungary if the choice is open.

What a workable shortlist looks like

Not ten famous names. Three or four programmes, chosen so they cannot all fail for one reason.

  1. 1Programmes, not universities — two courses at one university can differ on language, exam and deadline.
  2. 2Not all decided by the same entrance examination, so one paper cannot end the year.
  3. 3One inside the current Stipendium call, and one you could genuinely self-fund — the scholarship is a hope, the fee is a fact.
  4. 4At least one outside Budapest, so the cheaper scenario is live rather than a fallback.
  5. 5Every one verified as English-taught from the programme page, not a course-finder summary.

Then work it in order: take each programme's language, English evidence, fee and deadline off its own page, write the Stipendium closing date down separately, find the date for any entrance examination and count backwards, and price the city rather than the country. If other destinations are in play, applying to several countries at once is honest about the cost; the route itself is in the Hungary student visa process, where the file is lodged and the country guide.

Common questions

Which is the best university in Hungary for a Bangladeshi student?+

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one has not asked about your subject, your budget or your exam preparation. The decision is made by four things a ranking does not measure: whether the faculty runs its own entrance examination, whether the programme is in the current Stipendium Hungaricum call, whether the degree is genuinely taught in English, and whether you live in Budapest or a regional town on national living costs of EUR 400 to 600 a month.

Do Hungarian universities really make you sit an entrance exam?+

Many do, and it is normal rather than exceptional. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English are admitted on a written and oral entrance examination in biology and chemistry, and many engineering programmes use an entry test or an interview. The exam belongs to the faculty rather than to a national testing body, so there is no single date or syllabus, and a score does not transfer to another university.

How much is tuition at a Hungarian university?+

Our country guide publishes a public tuition band of EUR 0 to 5,000 a year, where EUR 0 is the scholarship end rather than a normal outcome. English-taught medicine, dentistry and pharmacy sit outside that band and are quoted per programme, often in US dollars. Read the figure for your own programme and year off the university's fee page, never off an article.

Does a university's ranking affect my Stipendium Hungaricum chances or my visa?+

No. The scholarship is decided on your application and on the selection process described in the call, and the residence permit is decided on the file in front of the authority. A ranking is not a document that appears anywhere in either process.

Can I apply to a Hungarian university that is not in the Stipendium Hungaricum call?+

Yes, as a self-funded applicant. What you cannot do is reach it with that scholarship, because the call names the participating institutions and programmes. If the institution you want sits outside the call, the self-funded arithmetic has to work on its own, and the university's own scholarship schemes are worth checking separately.

Is Budapest worth the higher cost of living?+

Sometimes, and it should be decided with a number rather than a feeling. Budapest has the widest English-taught catalogue, the country's only substantial English-language job market and the best flight connections, and it sits near the top of the national EUR 400 to 600 a month band. The regional towns sit near the bottom, and across a three-year bachelor's that gap adds up to more than most fee differences.

What IELTS score do Hungarian universities ask for?+

There is no national rule. On the Hungarian programme pages we read, bachelor's programmes commonly sit around IELTS 5.5 and master's around 6.0, sometimes 6.5, but that is our observation rather than a published national minimum. Several institutions accept their own online test or an interview instead of a certificate, so check the programme page before booking a test.

Can I study in Hungary in English without knowing Hungarian?+

You can follow the degree in English, and thousands do. You cannot live entirely in English outside Budapest: renting a flat, the immigration office, a doctor's appointment and most part-time work happen in Hungarian. Starting at a beginner level before you fly is the cheapest thing you can do for your first year.

My target university is not one of the four you cover. What do I do?+

Run the same five checks. Confirm it appears on Study in Hungary as a recognised institution, read the language of instruction and the English evidence accepted off the programme page, find the fee page for your programme and year, check whether it appears in the current Stipendium call and note that closing date, then find the faculty's entrance examination syllabus and date and count backwards from it.

Is a Hungarian medical degree a licence to practise in Bangladesh?+

No. It is an academic qualification, and practising in Bangladesh is governed separately by the Bangladeshi registration process. That is a conversation to have with your family before the first payment rather than after graduation, and it is one reason the price world for English-taught medicine deserves its own examination.
