Two or three is right, ten is a mistake
There is a real argument for applying to more than one country: admission is uncertain, scholarships are competitive, and putting a whole year on one embassy's decision is a genuine risk. There is no argument for eight. Beyond about three the marginal application stops improving your odds and starts eating the attention and the money that made the first three strong.
The reason is that applications are not independent. They compete for the same documents, the same deadlines, the same bank balance and the same person.

The deadlines collide, and they collide in January
This is the practical constraint that catches people, and it is invisible until you lay the calendar out.

Four of the nine close within about two weeks of each other in January. Choosing Hungary, Finland, Denmark and Sweden together means preparing four complete files simultaneously, in the same fortnight, with four different portals. That is not a diversified plan, it is a single point of failure with four names.

The constraint that actually binds: money shown
⚠️ This is the part that goes wrong most expensively. Proof of funds is not a form, it is evidence that a specific amount of money is genuinely available to you. Two live visa files in the same month, each claiming the same balance, is not a stronger position — it is a weaker one, because embassies examine the source and history of the funds and ask about large movements.
Shuffling a balance between accounts so that two files each look funded on their own submission date is exactly the pattern that triggers a financial refusal, and a refusal recorded as misrepresentation follows you into every future Schengen application. The rule that keeps you safe: apply for ADMISSION in parallel, file VISAS in series. Offers cost nothing to hold. Collect two or three offers, then choose one and take a single visa file to the embassy with a clean, stable, fully explainable balance behind it.
