Hungary student visa from Bangladesh: the residence permit process after your admission

In short: File in person at the Hungarian consular office in Dhaka, allow four to six weeks of processing, and treat the funds question as a credibility test rather than a number test — OIF publishes no fixed amount, and a modest sum with a clean source beats a large sum with no story.

For Bangladeshi students, Hungary usually means one thing: Stipendium Hungaricum, one of Europe's largest fully-funded scholarships. But winning the scholarship and reaching Debrecen are two different processes, and this guide covers the second. (The scholarship strategy itself is a separate article.)

Self-fundedAdmission + tuition payment proofRoughly EUR 6,000/year at HUF 200,000/month, with a clear source

The process, step by step

  1. 1Confirm admission — nomination plus admission for Stipendium, direct university admission if self-funded.
  2. 2Assemble documents — Bengali papers need certified English translations.
  3. 3Book the consular appointment in Dhaka — applications are submitted in person; a representative cannot file for you.
  4. 4Submit, give biometrics, answer questions — expect interview-style questions on your study plan, funding and plans after graduation.
  5. 5Wait four to six weeks — longer in the July–August rush. For a September start, submitting by June is the safe line.
  6. 6Collect the permit, fly, register locally after arrival within the required window.

The document list

  • Passport valid at least six months beyond your stay
  • Application form and photographs
  • Admission or award letter
  • Tuition payment or scholarship proof
  • Bank statements (plus sponsor documents where relevant)
  • Proof of accommodation — a dormitory confirmation or rental contract
  • Health insurance
  • Academic certificates and transcripts, translated and attested
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Flight reservation (not a purchased ticket)

The funds question, honestly

OIF's factsheet names no amount — it asks for "sufficient resources" covering subsistence, accommodation, return travel and healthcare. That wording is the point: this is a credibility test. A statement that barely clears an imagined minimum, fed by one large deposit a week before filing, reads worse than a moderate balance with six months of ordinary history and a documented sponsor income behind it. Avoid sudden deposits; document the source of everything.

The five mistakes that cost intakes

  1. 1Starting the permit file only after the award letter arrives — by then it is June.
  2. 2Filing without accommodation proof — arrange the dormitory confirmation first.
  3. 3Skipping translation and attestation of Bengali documents.
  4. 4Unprepared answers to "why Hungary, why this programme" at submission.
  5. 5Ignoring processing time — an August filing for a September class is a gamble.

Common questions

Can the Hungary student permit be filed from Dhaka, or is Delhi required?+

Student residence permit applications are currently submitted in person at the Hungarian consular office in Dhaka — you do not normally need to travel to Delhi for this. Mission arrangements do change, so confirm the current rule on the official pages before booking an appointment.

How much money does Hungary require students to show?+

The immigration authority deliberately publishes no fixed amount — its factsheet asks for sufficient resources covering subsistence, accommodation, return travel and healthcare. In practice, planning around HUF 200,000 (about EUR 500) per month — roughly EUR 6,000 a year for self-funded students — with a clean, explainable source is what makes a file convincing.

Does a Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship replace the permit process?+

No — the scholarship covers tuition and a stipend, but the residence permit application, its documents and its timeline remain yours to run. The award letter becomes your strongest financial document, and showing some personal backup funds alongside it strengthens the file further.
