No authority publishes a waiting time you can hold anyone to, and the number you came here for is the least useful thing on this page. What decides your wait is a mechanism with three moving parts: when the clock legally starts, what the deciding authority is bound by, and how quickly you answer when something is missing. Only the last is yours, and it is worth more than the other two combined.
Two things make Hungary different, and the first is widely half-reported. You do not travel to India: the application is submitted in Dhaka, through VFS Global, named on its own site as the official partner of the Dhaka Office of the Embassy of Hungary. What is not true is that nothing leaves Dhaka — that office reports to the Hungarian embassy in New Delhi, and the decision is taken there, so a transfer stage sits in the middle of your wait that no status line describes (Dhaka or Delhi, the full map). The second is that an entrance examination and an offer usually stand in front of the permit, so the wait you live through is far longer than the decision itself.

Who has your file, and who decides it
The office that takes your papers does not decide them, and mixing the two up is why people ask the wrong desk for news.

The shape still favours you on cost. A Hungarian file sits in the BDT 2 to 4 lakh Bangladesh-side spend band rather than the BDT 3 to 5 lakh band, because the trip to India the higher band pays for is not part of this route. None of it is refundable on a refusal, in either band.
What the ninety-day maximum does and does not promise
Almost every figure you read about Hungarian visa timing is somebody's observation. One number is law.
Directive (EU) 2016/801, the students and researchers directive, requires a member state to decide a student application and notify the applicant within 90 days of the submission of a complete application. Hungary is an EU member state and applies that framework. Denmark is the exception among our nine — it has an opt-out from this area of EU law and publishes its own case processing standards instead — so do not carry a Danish assumption across to Hungary.
Three words in that sentence do all the work.
Maximum. It is a ceiling, not a target and not an average. A decision on day eighty-nine broke nothing.
Complete. The clock is tied to completeness. A missing certified translation, an insurance certificate that has not arrived, a question about where a deposit came from — while any of those is outstanding, the authority is waiting for you, and time spent waiting for you is not counted against it. That one sentence explains almost every timeline that bears no relation to what a family was told.
Decision. Ninety days is a deadline for a decision of either kind. A refusal delivered inside it met the deadline.
Why we will not print a number of days
No authority publishes a processing-time commitment for a Hungarian student residence permit from Dhaka, and this page will not invent one to fill the gap. What we do have is our own cross-country page, how long each European student visa takes, which carries the ranges we have observed across all nine destinations. Read it for shape, not for a promise: it says plainly that those are observations of how routes have behaved, and that nobody has committed to them. The same caution applies to every agency page you will read, with one difference — most of them do not say it.
And nobody can tell you Hungary's student visa success rate, because no authority produces one. Any percentage you are quoted was made up, and that single test tells you more about a consultancy than its office photographs do.
The wait you experience is longer than the decision
This is the Hungarian-specific point, and it is where the year is actually lost.

Entrance examinations are normal in Hungary and are set by the faculty rather than nationally, so a second university means a second exam on a second date (which Hungarian universities are worth applying to, and the guides for Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Budapest University of Technology).
The scholarship route back-loads everything. Stipendium Hungaricum applications close months before the intake, the result lands late, and only then does the permit file begin — compressing the one stage you could have prepared calmly. The fix is simple and almost nobody does it: finish attestation, translation and bank paperwork while you wait for the result, not after it (why Stipendium applications fail, the scholarships beyond it).
What quietly stops the clock
A file is rarely delayed by the authority. It is delayed by a gap in itself, and these are the gaps.
- Attestation and apostille, out of order. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Hungary accepts an apostille — so the older consular legalisation chain is not needed here, unlike for Denmark, Greece and Finland, which objected under Article 12. Originals, then education board verification, then attestation, then the apostille, then certified translation: the order that matters, which countries refuse the apostille, certified translation in Dhaka. That chain runs about BDT 10,000 to 30,000, and courier to Europe BDT 4,000 to 9,000.
- A name that does not match across your NID, passport and certificates. It stops a file dead and takes longer to repair than anything else here (fixing a name mismatch), and a passport renewed mid-application breaks the links to everything already filed (renewing mid-application).
- A funds file that invites a question. Hungary uses no blocked account and its immigration authority publishes no fixed amount — it applies a sufficient-means test, with roughly EUR 6,000 a year, about HUF 200,000 a month, as the working level. Because the test is judgemental rather than mechanical, document quality decides it, and a large late deposit with no explanation is the surest way to generate a request for more papers (proof of funds for Hungary, proof of funds generally).
- A document that expired while you waited (police clearance, how long each document stays valid), or a form filled in carelessly, the cheapest delay on this list to avoid (the fields that sink files, the one-page checklist by country).

What tracking tells you, and what it does not
Tracking shows custody, not progress. It can tell you a file was received and, later, that a passport is ready for collection. It cannot tell you what an officer thinks, whether a verification has started, or how close you are to a decision. A file stuck at "under process" for a month and one that will be decided tomorrow look identical from outside.
Hungary's version of this is sharper. The centre that gives you a receipt in Dhaka is not the office that decides your case, and the stage in between is exactly the part no status line describes. So a tracker repeating itself for weeks is the system working normally. Ask the centre about custody, never about the decision: it genuinely does not know, and the counter staff are not being evasive with you.

The one instruction that actually shortens your wait
Answer a request for a document in days, not weeks.
That is the entire lever. While the authority is waiting for you, the ninety days is not running against it, so a fortnight spent hunting for a bank statement is a fortnight you added to your own file. Make that possible before you file rather than after: keep one folder with every scan, every bank page, your sponsor's income documents and the explanation of where your money came from. On this route the request is more likely to be about explaining money than about a missing form, precisely because Hungary has no blocked account to make the test mechanical.

What is the single fastest way to shorten my wait?+
Answer a request for a missing or additional document in days rather than weeks. While the authority is waiting for you, the clock is not running against it, so a two-week reply is two weeks you added to your own file. Keep your scans, your bank paperwork and your sponsor's documents in one folder before you ever file, so a reply takes an evening.
My file has been in for weeks and the office has told me nothing. Is that bad?+
Silence is the normal condition on this route, not a warning sign. What deserves action is passing the legal maximum, or getting close to your university's enrolment deadline — and the first move then is to write to the university about deferral, not to chase the office daily. Repeated chasing does not advance a file and can cost you the goodwill you may need later.
Is the type D visa sticker the same as the residence permit?+
No, and confusing the two is the commonest misunderstanding on the Hungarian route. The type D national visa is a long-stay entry document that lets you travel. The residence permit card itself is issued in Hungary after you arrive, through the immigration authority, and that card is what governs your stay. So your timeline does not end when the passport comes back — there is a step waiting for you on the other side.
Why is Hungary described as one of the easier routes, then?+
Because of cost and control rather than speed. You are not adding a personal trip to India, and the document chain is shorter than for three of our nine, because Hungary accepts a Bangladeshi apostille while Denmark, Greece and Finland do not. Both make the route cheaper and more controllable. Neither is a promise that the decision itself arrives faster.
If Hungary is quick, can I start my application later than for other countries?+
That is the most expensive misreading of this page. The permit decision is only the last stage. In front of it sit an entrance examination or interview, an offer, and for scholarship applicants a result that arrives late in the cycle — so the wait a student experiences is much longer than the decision alone.
