Hungary's intakes and deadlines: four clocks, and the one that matters closes in January

In short: Hungary teaches from September and from February, but the date that decides your year is neither of those. Stipendium Hungaricum closes in January for a September start — roughly eight months ahead — while self-funded admission at the same universities is still open months later. Missing the first is not the same as missing Hungary.

Almost every page about studying in Hungary gives you one deadline: January. That is correct for the government scholarship and wrong for nearly everything else, and the confusion costs Bangladeshi students in both directions.

One group finds the January date in April, decides the year is gone, and stops looking — when a self-funded place at the same university was still open and affordable. The other group reads "rolling admission", applies in July, and discovers that the one part of the process with no flexibility at all is the visa.

Four clocks run at once on a Hungarian application. Only one of them has a national date.

The four clocks

Only the first has a single published national date. The other three are set institution by institution, which is why no page — including this one — can honestly hand you next year's calendar. What it can give you is the shape, so you know which page to go and read, and roughly when.

Clock one: the scholarship, and it is two deadlines

Stipendium Hungaricum is why most Bangladeshi students look at Hungary at all. It is a bilateral government scholarship — full tuition, a monthly stipend, accommodation support and medical insurance — with places allocated to Bangladesh rather than pooled against the whole world.

Its window opens in the autumn and closes in January, for teaching that begins the following September. Eight months sit between the deadline and the first lecture, and that gap is the single biggest reason strong applicants miss out. They are not rejected. They find the programme in April.

The part that catches people who do apply on time is that it is two applications, not one: the application on the programme's own portal, and a parallel nomination step on the Bangladesh side with its own deadline and, historically, hard copies. Submitting only the online half is a complete, avoidable loss of a year. The other common failures are collected in why Stipendium applications fail.

Work backwards from January and the real starting gun is much earlier. Document attestation should be moving in October; an IELTS result you do not yet have cannot be booked, sat and reported inside December. The instruction that actually works is to open the official portal in September of the previous year, not when you feel ready.

Clock two: self-funded admission, which is barely a deadline at all

This is the half of Hungary nobody writes about, and it is the reason a missed January is survivable.

Most Hungarian institutions take international applications through DreamApply, which is admissions software that universities license rather than a national system like Italy's Universitaly or Sweden's central portal. Each university runs its own instance, sets its own dates, and a good number admit on a rolling basis until places fill. The walkthrough is in applying through DreamApply.

For a September start, that window commonly runs from spring into early summer — months after the scholarship has closed. Public tuition sits in the EUR 0-5,000 a year band and living costs at EUR 400-600 a month, which is the second lowest of the nine countries we work on; the full arithmetic is in what studying in Hungary costs.

There is also a second tier of money that is not tied to January at all: Hungarian university scholarships beyond Stipendium, administered institution by institution and almost never advertised centrally.

Clock three: the entrance examination

Between your application and your offer there is frequently one more fixed date, and it is the one students least expect.

For medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, the big Hungarian universities set a genuine written and oral entrance examination in biology and chemistry, taken in English, which can often be sat remotely or at an examination centre. Outside medicine, many programmes run a short online interview or subject test instead — often to verify English where no IELTS certificate is submitted, which is the route described in studying in Hungary without IELTS.

Either way, it is a sitting on a date, not a formality attached to an offer. If you last opened a chemistry textbook for HSC, plan months of preparation rather than weeks.

Clock four: the visa, the only one that will not move

Hungary's student file is submitted in Dhaka — there is no Delhi trip for a study case — and processing typically takes four to six weeks, longer in the July and August rush. June is the last safe month to have submitted, for a September start. That is not a published deadline; it is four to six weeks of processing plus a margin, and it is the line every other clock has to fit behind.

Note what June implies. Admission has to be finished before it. Attested documents, proof of funds with a bank history an officer can read, police clearance, health insurance and accommodation proof all have to exist before it. Scholarship winners are squeezed hardest here, because the award arrives in spring and the consular clock only starts afterwards — so get the paperwork done while you wait for the result, not after it.

Working backwards from a September start

The most useful thing on this page. The third column matters: we mark what is published and what is our planning advice, because presenting the two as the same thing is how people end up trusting a date nobody set.

The February intake, honestly

Read that second row again. A February start is an earlier deadline for a later start, not a later deadline. If you missed a January scholarship round, the February intake you are now looking at closed in November — before the deadline you missed, not after it. When waiting a year is the better decision

Rushing is not neutral. It is how funds documents get assembled badly, and a thin file is refused on the same evidence a patient one would have passed on. Wait for the next cycle if any of these is true:

• A scholarship is what makes the plan affordable and the round has closed. Paying to chase a closed round costs money and buys nothing.
• Your money has just arrived in the account. Every one of the nine looks at where funds came from, not only that they are there. Four more months of ordinary statements is a materially stronger file.
• Your English test is not taken. Booking, sitting and reporting does not compress, and a score has a validity window of its own to plan around.
• Attestation cannot finish before June. An apostille chain that starts in April does not produce a June visa file.
• Your passport is short-dated or being renewed. Fix that first; see the e-passport guide.

Who this page is wrong for

If Hungary is on your list only because the scholarship sounded free, this is the wrong plan. Hungarian is difficult and little spoken elsewhere, the post-study job-seeking permit is nine months and the shortest of the nine, and the graduate market is smaller than Denmark's or Finland's.
