How long an IELTS score stays valid, and when to sit the test

The rule

An IELTS Test Report Form is valid for two years from the date you sat the test — not from the date the result was issued, and not from the date you sent it anywhere. After that it cannot be renewed, extended or revalidated. You sit the test again.

Some institutions apply a shorter window of their own; none apply a longer one. So two years is the ceiling, not a guarantee.

Why two years is less time than it sounds

A European application is not one deadline. It is at least two, and the gap between them is where scores expire.

WhenWhat happensMust the score be valid?
October to JanuaryApplications open and close for an autumn intakeYes
February to AprilOffers issued, sometimes conditionalYes
April to JunePre-enrolment, tuition payment, university confirmationUsually
June to AugustStudent visa or residence permit application at the embassyYes, and this is the one people miss
SeptemberIntake starts

A score sat in September 2026 covers all of that for an autumn 2027 intake. A score sat in March 2025 for a plan that slipped by a year does not — it dies in March 2027, in the middle of the visa stage, after the university has already accepted it.

⚠️ The immigration file is a separate reader. An admissions office that accepted a score in February does not extend its life for the embassy in July. Several of the nine countries require language evidence in the residence permit file in its own right.

When to sit it

The safe window is roughly six to twelve months before your intake starts.

  • Earlier than twelve months and you are burning validity on a plan that has not been made yet. A single deferred intake can put your visa stage outside the window.
  • Later than six months and you have no room for a retake, no room for a One Skill Retake inside its 60-day limit, and no room for a slow admissions office.

For a September intake, that means sitting the test between roughly the previous September and the previous March. The full year mapped out is in the application timeline.

Two students, the same score

Rubina sits IELTS in November 2026 and gets 6.5. She applies in January 2027 for a September 2027 intake in Italy, gets her offer in April, pre-enrols in June and applies for her visa in July. Her score is fifteen months from expiry at every stage. Nothing about validity ever crosses her mind, which is what a well-timed test looks like.

Shahriar sits IELTS in February 2025, at the start of a long plan, and gets the same 6.5. He applies for September 2026, misses the deadline for one country, switches target and applies again for September 2027. His score expires in February 2027 — after his application went in, before the embassy opens the file. The university has his score on record. The embassy asks for a valid one, and there is no version of this where he does not sit the test again, in the worst possible month.

Same band, same person, same effort. The only difference was the month on the Test Report Form.

Deferring an intake resets nothing

If you defer a place by a year — a common outcome after a refused visa or a missed deadline — check the expiry date before anything else. A deferral moves the university's date; it does not move the two years on your score. This is the single most frequent way a valid score becomes an invalid one, because the deferral feels like the problem being solved.

What expiry does not affect

Your English did not expire. If a university has already issued an unconditional offer on the strength of a score that later lapses, the offer normally stands — it is the visa file and any new application that need a live score. Ask the admissions office in writing rather than assuming either way.

A One Skill Retake result carries the original test date. It produces a form combining the retaken skill with your original three scores, so it does not restart the two-year clock. Plan around the original test date.

Sending the score, and what it costs

  • Electronic delivery to recognising organisations is free and unlimited. Most European universities take results this way, and it is faster.
  • Postal copies are free for up to five organisations.
  • Beyond that, IDP Bangladesh publishes an additional Test Report Form fee of BDT 2,400 per institution, as read on 9 September 2026.

Keep the original paper form somewhere safe. Embassies sometimes want to see it even where the university took an electronic copy.

If your score is about to expire

  1. 1Count the months to your visa decision, not to the application deadline. That is the date the validity has to reach.
  2. 2If it is close, sit a new test now, while there is still room to retake. It is BDT 29,600 against the cost of a lost intake.
  3. 3If your original test was computer-delivered and within 60 days, and only one section is weak, use a One Skill Retake at BDT 18,600 — see how many times you can retake IELTS.
  4. 4Check whether the programme accepts an alternative at all before you pay. Some do — study in Europe without IELTS sets out where.

The one-line version

Two years, from the test date, and it has to survive both the admissions office and the embassy. Work backwards from the visa decision, not from the application deadline, and everything else follows.

Common questions

How long is an IELTS score valid?+

Two years from the date you sat the test. It cannot be renewed or extended, and some institutions apply a shorter window of their own — two years is the ceiling, not a guarantee.

When should I take IELTS for a September intake?+

Roughly six to twelve months before the intake starts, so between the previous September and the previous March. Earlier burns validity on a plan that may slip; later leaves no room for a retake or for a slow admissions office.

My score expires between my offer and my visa appointment. Is that a problem?+

Usually yes. The immigration file is a separate reader from the admissions office, and several of the nine countries want language evidence in the residence permit file in its own right. Count the months to the visa decision, not to the application deadline.

How many universities can I send my result to for free?+

Electronic delivery to recognising organisations is free and unlimited. Postal copies are free for up to five organisations; beyond that IDP Bangladesh publishes an extra Test Report Form fee of BDT 2,400 per institution.
