Closing the gap from band 6 to 6.5: do the arithmetic first

Start with the rounding rule, because it changes the target

The overall band is the mean of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band. The official rule adds two lines that most candidates never read:

• an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band
• an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band

So 6.25 is reported as 6.5. You do not need an average of 6.5. You need an average of 6.25.

Four sections at 6.0 give you 24 points. An average of 6.25 needs 25. One point. Not one band, one point.

What one point looks like

Read the third and fourth rows again. Two half-band improvements, or one full-band improvement in a single section, both land you on 6.5. The fifth row shows the same total reaching 6.5 with a 5.5 still in it.

⚠️ But check the band condition before you celebrate that last row. Many European programmes write the requirement as "6.5 overall, with no individual band below 6.0", and a 5.5 in writing fails that even at a reported 6.5. Which point is cheapest to buy

Not all half bands cost the same amount of work.

Listening and reading are scored objectively: a raw score converts to a band. Improve the technique — the transfer of answers, the word limits, the spelling — and the number moves within weeks. Writing is judged against descriptors by a trained examiner, and improving it means genuinely writing better, which is slow and needs someone to read your work.

So the honest advice for a person at a flat 6.0 with six weeks left is: go and get the point in listening and reading. Writing is where the long-term work belongs; it is not where a deadline is met.

The three technique fixes that move listening and reading fastest

1. 1Spelling and grammar of the answer itself. A correct answer spelled wrong is wrong. Plural where the recording said singular is wrong. This alone is often two or three marks.
2. 2The word limit. "No more than two words and a number" means exactly that; three words scores zero even if the meaning is right.
3. 3Reading order. Most reading question types follow the order of the passage. Matching headings and matching information do not. Knowing which is which stops you re-reading the whole text.

Three marks in listening is frequently the difference between 6.0 and 6.5.

If the shortfall is in one skill only

A six-week plan for the last point

• Weeks 1-2. One full timed listening section and one reading passage every day. Do not study new vocabulary. Log every wrong answer and mark it as knowledge, technique, or careless.
• Weeks 3-4. Attack whichever of those three categories is largest. If most errors are careless, the fix is process, not English.
• Week 5. Two full mock tests under real conditions, at the time of day your test is booked.
• Week 6. Nothing new. Light practice, sleep, and read the test-day mechanics so nothing on screen is a surprise.

If your practice mocks are not reaching the target by week five, move the test date rather than sitting it and hoping. Moving a date costs BDT 3,000. A wasted attempt costs BDT 29,600.

The wider point

Half a band is a real difference in ability, but 6.0 to 6.5 is the smallest real difference IELTS can express — and the rounding rule means you are chasing a quarter of an average, not a band. Treat it as an engineering problem for six weeks, and keep the actual language learning going afterwards, because studying in English starts the week you land.
