What IELTS actually is
IELTS is an English proficiency test. There is no pass or fail: you receive a score, and the university or embassy decides whether that score is enough for them. The test is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge, and in Bangladesh it is run by IDP and the British Council.
There are two versions, Academic and General Training. For university admission in Europe it is always Academic. General Training was built for migration and work, and booking the wrong module costs you twice — the fee is gone, and the wait for a new date can push you past an application deadline. Academic versus General Training sets out exactly where they differ.
What the score means
Each of the four skills gets its own band, and the overall score is their average, rounded to the nearest half band. In IELTS's own wording, band 6 is a "competent user" and band 7 a "good user". The whole scale is explained in what your band actually means.
Your real question is probably what you need, which varies by country and programme. The nine countries are laid out side by side in IELTS requirements by country. One detail rejects more applicants than any other: many programmes add a condition like "no individual band below 5.5", so reaching 6.5 overall with a 5.0 in writing still fails.

Taking it in Bangladesh, and what it costs
Every test in Bangladesh is now computer-delivered — the paper option is gone, which means more available dates and much faster results. The details are in computer-delivered or paper IELTS.

If one skill lets you down you may not need to sit the whole test again — there are conditions, and they are in how many times you can retake.

Preparation: where to start, and about books
The honest answer to "how do I start" is to sit one full mock test first. It tells you which of the four skills is weakest, and that is where your time should go. A realistic three-month routine that costs nothing is in the preparation plan.
On books: Cambridge's own official practice test series is the most reliable, because the questions are built to the real format. A coaching centre's in-house "guide" is not a substitute for authentic material.
⚠️ There is no such thing as a leaked IELTS paper. Anyone selling advance questions or a guaranteed band is running a scam, and being caught means a cancelled result and a mark against future applications. Can you study in Europe without IELTS
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and this is the question with the most exaggeration around it online. Country by country:

- Cyprus without IELTS
- Malta without IELTS
- Finland without IELTS — where the honest answer is close to impossible
The alternative that works most often is a medium of instruction certificate, a letter from your institution confirming your previous study was in English: how to get one, what the letter must say, and which universities accept it. Beyond that, the Duolingo English Test is accepted in some places and not others, some universities run an online English interview, and you can ask for a waiver directly.
One step almost everyone skips: before you accept an offer, confirm that the programme is really taught in English.

What does IELTS stand for?+
IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is an English proficiency test with no pass or fail: you are given a band score from 0 to 9 in each of four skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking — and the university or embassy decides whether that score is sufficient for their purpose.
How much does IELTS cost in Bangladesh?+
IDP Bangladesh listed IELTS on Computer at BDT 29,600 on its own fee page on 9 September 2026. That is the version you need for a European university: IELTS Academic, computer-delivered. The fee moves with the exchange rate, so open the official page yourself before paying.
What IELTS score do European universities require?+
Most European programmes ask for between 5.5 and 6.5 overall. Cyprus, Bulgaria, Malta and many Hungarian programmes sit at 5.5, Italy and Greece generally at 6.0, and most Nordic and Danish programmes at 6.5. More important than the overall figure is the per-band condition many programmes attach, typically no individual band below 5.5.
Is paper-based IELTS still available in Bangladesh?+
No. According to IDP Bangladesh's own page, paper-based IELTS is no longer offered in Bangladesh after 31 January 2026, so every test is computer-delivered. That means far more available dates and results in one to five days. The questions, structure, timing and marking criteria are unchanged, and the speaking test is still conducted face to face with an examiner.
