IELTS Academic versus General Training: only two papers differ

What is the same, and what is not

Half the test is literally the same paper. That is exactly why the mistake is so easy to make and so expensive.

Which one you need

Academic. Every university programme across our nine countries — Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Finland, Greece, Denmark, Sweden and Bulgaria — asks for IELTS Academic. So does every scholarship scheme attached to them. General Training exists for permanent migration to countries like Australia and Canada, for some work visas, and for vocational training routes. It is a perfectly good test; it is simply not the one an admissions office will read.

If a university page just says "IELTS 6.0", it means Academic. The word is omitted because within higher education nobody imagines you would sit the other one.

Why General Training is not "easier"

It is a common belief and it is misleading. General Training uses more everyday language, so the reading passages feel less intimidating. But the band conversion is set differently: on the General Training reading paper you need more correct answers to reach the same band, precisely because the texts are easier. The two tests are calibrated to report the same band scale.

So the plan of "sit General Training, get a higher number, hope nobody notices" fails twice. The number is not reliably higher, and the Test Report Form states the module in plain text at the top.

What the reading and writing papers actually look like

Academic reading gives you three long passages taken from journals, books, magazines and newspapers, written for a general but educated audience. At least one will contain a developed argument rather than a description. The subject can be anything — glacier movement, the history of chocolate, workplace psychology — and no prior knowledge is assumed or rewarded.

General Training reading is built in three sections that move from everyday to workplace to one longer general-interest text: notices, timetables, advertisements, staff handbooks, contracts. The English is not simpler in kind, but the texts are shorter and more familiar.

Academic writing task 1 hands you a chart, table, graph, map or process diagram and asks you to describe it in at least 150 words. General Training task 1 asks for a letter of at least 150 words — a complaint, a request, an apology — with a stated tone. They are completely different skills, and practice for one is close to useless for the other.

Task 2 is an essay in both, but the Academic prompts lean towards abstract and academic subjects while General Training prompts stay closer to everyday life.

What the mistake actually costs

There is no transfer, no partial refund and no conversion. The Test Report Form you hold is valid — for something you are not doing.

Where the error tends to happen

1. 1Booking on someone else's advice. A cousin who went to Canada sat General Training. Their advice is correct for their route and wrong for yours.
2. 2Coaching centres that teach both in one room. The practice material blurs together and the booking follows the material.
3. 3Rushing the booking form. The module is a dropdown, not a warning screen.
4. 4A second application to a different country. Someone who prepared for Australia and then switched to Europe carries the old plan across.

The fix is thirty seconds: after you pay, open the confirmation email and read the module name. If it is wrong, both providers allow a change of test for the transfer fee — IDP Bangladesh publishes BDT 3,000 — provided you act before the cut-off. That is a far better outcome than discovering it on the Test Report Form.

What about UKVI and Life Skills

You will see them on the booking screen, and neither is for you:

• IELTS for UKVI is the same Academic test taken under extra identity checks required by the UK Home Office. IDP Bangladesh prices it at BDT 33,200 rather than BDT 29,600. It is accepted for European study, but you are paying more for a UK administrative requirement none of our nine countries has.
• IELTS Life Skills tests only speaking and listening at A1 or B1 and produces a pass or fail, not a band. No university uses it.

What to do next

1. 1Open the admissions page of the programme you actually want and read the English requirement word for word.
