Step 3 is the whole article

Everything else is a form. This is the part that causes real damage.

Register with your passport, and type the name exactly as the passport prints it. Not the way your HSC certificate spells it, not the way you sign it, not the version without the middle name. The name you enter is the name printed on your Test Report Form, and that form goes to a university admissions office and then, in most of our nine countries, into a visa file.

If your passport says one thing and your transcripts say another, you have a name mismatch — and the fix belongs at the passport and certificate end, before you book, not afterwards. That process is set out in fixing a name mismatch across your documents. A Test Report Form cannot be re-issued in a different name because you changed your mind.

The same passport must be the one you carry into the test room. Both providers check the ID against the booking, and a different document — even a valid one — can end the day before it starts.

Step 2: Academic, not General Training

Every university application in Europe wants IELTS Academic. General Training exists for migration and work routes; no admissions office in our nine countries accepts it for a degree. The booking screen does not warn you, because for a person applying to move to Canada, General Training is the right answer.

Sitting the wrong module costs the entire fee and roughly six weeks. It is the single most expensive click on the page. What actually differs between the two is only the reading and writing papers, which is exactly why it is so easy to get wrong.

Step 5: choose the date by counting backwards

Do not book the earliest date you feel ready for. Book from the deadline backwards:

2. 2Minus the time the university needs to see the score in your account
3. 3Minus one to five days for a computer-delivered result
4. 4That is your latest possible test date
5. 5Now subtract another eight weeks so that a One Skill Retake still fits inside the window

Step 5 is the one people skip, and it is the difference between a fixable 6.0 and an unfixable one. A One Skill Retake must be sat within 60 days of the original test — the mechanics are in how many times you can retake.

Step 6: paying from Bangladesh

Both providers take payment online with local cards and mobile financial services, and both operate physical registration points where you can pay in person and get help with the form. If an online payment does not produce an immediate confirmation, do not book again. Wait, check your account, and contact the provider — duplicate bookings are refundable, but slowly.

Keep the payment reference. It is what you need if the confirmation email never arrives.

If you are outside a test city, or the online form is fighting you, use a registration point in person. The British Council operates registration centres in more towns than it holds tests in, and staff there will complete the booking with your passport in front of them — which removes the single biggest risk in the whole process, a mistyped name. There is no surcharge for booking this way.

What arrives after you pay

A confirmation with your test date, your reporting time, the venue address, and — read this line — your speaking slot, which may be on a different day or a different time from the rest of the test. It is a separate appointment and people miss it because they read the first date and stopped.

Set two alarms, not one.

On the day

• The same passport you registered with. Nothing else counts as ID.
• Arrive early. Registration and biometric checks take time, and late arrival means no entry.
• Personal items go into storage. You cannot take a phone, a watch or notes to your seat.
• Pens are not needed for listening, reading and writing any more — those are on screen. You are given something to write on for planning.

After the test

Results appear in your online account, typically within one to five days. From there you can send them electronically to universities, and there is no charge for electronic delivery to as many institutions as you like. Postal copies are free for up to five organisations; beyond that IDP Bangladesh publishes an extra Test Report Form fee of BDT 2,400.

If the score is not what you needed, read the arithmetic of the last half band before you book anything. Very often the gap is one point in one skill, not a band.
