In short: Serious preparation for a September start begins about fourteen months earlier. Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Hungary's scholarship all close in January — roughly eight months before teaching begins. Missing that window is the most common way a year is lost.
Most Bangladeshi students begin researching European study around the time they want to leave. The calendar does not allow it. Here is the timeline that actually works, counting backwards from a September intake.
Fourteen to twelve months before — July to September
Decide the shortlist. Budget, IELTS status, target start date, and whether staying to work matters. Those four answers narrow nine countries to two or three.
Book IELTS. Test dates fill up, and you want room for a retake. Aim to have the result before October.
Start the conversation at home. The financial file needs three to six months of consistent bank history, and that clock starts when the account starts behaving consistently — not when you apply.
Eleven to ten months before — October to November
Start document attestation. This is the step that ruins timelines. Board or university verification, then the Ministry of Education, then MOFA, then the embassy — in that fixed order, four to eight weeks minimum.
Start it *before* you have offers. The documents are the same regardless of which university accepts you.
Build the shortlist properly. Actual programmes, actual entry requirements, actual deadlines. Check each programme's English requirement rather than the country's.
Write the first draft of your SOP. It will need several revisions, and the version you write in a panic in January is worse.
Nine to eight months before — December to January
This is the month everything Nordic happens.

Four countries and the best full scholarship on the list, all inside one month, eight months before teaching starts. Nothing else in the European calendar is as unforgiving.
Italy opens too — university applications typically run December to May, with DSU on a separate regional calendar.
Seven to five months before — February to April
Entrance examinations and interviews. Many Finnish programmes require an entrance test. Stipendium Hungaricum runs interviews. Medicine in Bulgaria and Hungary means a biology and chemistry exam.
Cyprus, Greece and Malta open. Cyprus runs April to July, Greece March to July, Malta February to June.
Offers begin arriving from the January round.
Finish attestation and start certified translations where they are needed.
Four to three months before — May to June
Accept your offer and pay any deposit.
Italy: complete Universitaly pre-enrolment. This is a hard prerequisite for the visa — no pre-enrolment, no visa appointment, regardless of your offer letter.
Italy: apply for the Declaration of Value, which takes weeks and must be planned in.
Assemble the financial file. Bank statement, solvency certificate, sponsor documents, affidavit. Time the solvency certificate to the appointment — many are accepted only within 15 to 30 days.
Bulgaria opens — May to August.
Two to one months before — July to August
Submit the visa application. Through VFS or the embassy, depending on the country.
Prepare for the interview. Know your tuition figure, your city, your sponsor's occupation, and the explanation for every significant bank credit.
Arrange accommodation and insurance — several countries require both in the visa file.
Book the flight once the visa is granted. Not before.
The month itself — September
Arrival, residence permit registration, university enrolment, a bank account, a local SIM.
Where students actually lose the year
Discovering the January deadlines in June. By far the most common. Four countries and the best scholarship gone.
Starting attestation after receiving an offer. Adds four to eight weeks at exactly the point where the visa file is due.
Assuming the offer letter is enough for Italy. Universitaly pre-enrolment is separate and mandatory.
Depositing the funds a week before the appointment. Meets the number, fails the credibility test.
Waiting for IELTS before doing anything else. Attestation, shortlisting and the SOP are all independent of your test result. Run them in parallel.
If you are starting late
You have not lost the year — you have lost some countries.
June, for that September: Italy (if the university's window is open), Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Bulgaria.
August, for that September: genuinely tight everywhere; Cyprus and Bulgaria's February intake is the realistic target.
Any month, for the following September: you have the full timeline, including the Nordics and Stipendium Hungaricum. Using it properly is almost always better than forcing a rushed application into a closing window.

Common questions
How early should I start applying to European universities?+
About fourteen months before you want to start classes. For a September intake that means beginning the preceding July or August: IELTS over the summer, document attestation from October, and applications from December onwards. The Nordic deadlines in January are what force the long lead time.
It is already June and I want to start in September. Is that possible?+
For some countries, yes. Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Bulgaria still have windows open into the summer. Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum closed in January and are gone for that year. Applying to a realistic country now beats a rushed application to one that has already closed.
What takes the longest?+
Document attestation, almost always — four to eight weeks through board or university verification, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the embassy, in that fixed order. It is sequential and cannot be compressed, which is why it should start before you have offers rather than after.
Can I apply to more than one country at once?+
Yes, and it is sensible. The deadlines barely overlap — the Nordics in January, Italy through spring, Cyprus and Bulgaria into the summer — so a January Nordic application and a spring Italian one are compatible. Just budget for parallel attestation sets and be honest at interview about applying elsewhere.
