Who Szeged actually suits

The University of Szeged sits in southern Hungary, near the Serbian border, and is one of the country's larger research universities. Its reputation rests on the sciences — it is the university where Albert Szent-Gyorgyi isolated vitamin C — and in practice that means medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, biology and computer science are where its English-taught strength lies.

It suits a science-minded student who wants a real research environment at a low cost of living, and who does not need a city job market. It is a poor fit for anyone whose plan depends on part-time earnings.

Entry and cost at a glance

What it is genuinely strong in

Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English; chemistry and biochemistry; biology; computer science and software engineering; agriculture and food science; and a solid English-taught business and economics offer. The science faculties have real laboratories and real research groups, which matters if a PhD is anywhere in your plan.

The two ways in, and they are different applications

Self-funded. You apply directly to the university through its online application system, with transcripts, English evidence and, for medical programmes, the entrance examination. Fees are paid per semester and the offer letter names them.

Stipendium Hungaricum. This is a Hungarian government scholarship applied for through the Tempus Public Foundation, with a nomination from the Bangladesh side, not through the university. Szeged hosts a large number of Stipendium students, which is why the two routes get confused. They have different deadlines, different documents and different odds. The entrance exam for medical programmes

Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy at Szeged require a written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, in English, often with an interview element. As at Debrecen, it is a real filter rather than a formality. Prepare with HSC-plus-level material in both subjects, and sit a timed practice paper before you decide the application is worth its fee.

The honest part

Szeged is a pleasant mid-sized city and a cheap one, but it is not a place to find English-language work. The shared-services and outsourcing employers that make English-only jobs possible in Budapest are not here. Treat any earnings as a bonus and fund your studies from savings or a scholarship — the rules themselves are in part-time work in Europe.

⚠️ Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing are regulated professions. A Hungarian degree in any of them is not a licence to practise. Bangladesh requires BMDC registration, an internship in an approved hospital and a pass in the registration examination; EU countries require their own registration and language.

Finally, Hungary uses the forint, not the euro. Tuition may be quoted in euros while your daily costs are in forint, so leave about ten percent of margin in the budget for exchange movement.
