University of Debrecen: the entrance exam and the real fees

Who Debrecen actually suits

Debrecen is a large public university in eastern Hungary and, by a wide margin, the Hungarian institution Bangladeshi students hear about most. That is partly reputation and partly recruitment: it has taught medicine in English for decades and has a large fee-paying international intake.

It suits two very different students. One is a science student aiming at medicine, dentistry or pharmacy who can pass a real entrance examination and fund it. The other is an engineering, agriculture, IT or business student for whom Debrecen is simply a cheap, recognised public degree in the EU. The second group pays a fraction of what the first does, and hears about it far less.

The two price worlds

Those tuition figures move every intake and the university publishes the current ones per programme. Treat the table as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

The entrance exam is real

For medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, Debrecen sets an entrance examination in biology and chemistry, usually a written paper followed by an oral or interview component, taken in English. It can often be sat remotely or at an examination centre.

Students underestimate it constantly. It is not a formality attached to an offer; candidates fail it, and a fail means no place that intake. If you last studied chemistry for HSC and have not opened a textbook since, plan on months of preparation, not weeks.

Non-medical programmes generally do not have an entrance exam of that kind, though some ask for an online interview or a subject test — check the specific programme page.

How you apply

1. 1Choose the programme and read its entry requirements on the university's own international admissions site.
2. 2Apply through the university's online application system, with transcripts, passport, a medical certificate and your English evidence.
3. 3Sit the entrance examination if your programme requires one.
4. 4Pay the tuition instalment the offer letter names, then collect the acceptance and payment confirmation.

The honest part

⚠️ A Hungarian medical degree is not a licence to practise medicine. To practise in Bangladesh you must register with the BMDC, which requires an internship in an approved Bangladeshi hospital and a pass in its registration examination for foreign graduates. To practise in an EU country you need that country's registration and, in almost every case, its language. Nobody selling you a place is responsible for either step.

Two more things worth knowing. Debrecen is not Budapest — it is a smaller, quieter city where English-language part-time work is scarce, so an income assumption in your budget is unsafe; see the part-time work rules. And the medical programmes have a genuine attrition problem: the first two years are examination-heavy, and students who arrived under-prepared do fail out, having already paid.
