Why timelines go wrong
Students plan forwards from today and hope. The process rewards planning backwards from the intake date, because several stages have hard external deadlines and one stage — the decision — has no deadline you can rely on at all.
Below is the sequence with honest ranges. Every range is typical, not guaranteed, and every one of them varies by country, by season and by file.
The ten stages

A realistic total from firm offer to departure is four to seven months. Students who start three months out are usually not late because they were slow — they are late because stages 3, 6 and 8 have no compression available.
The three that actually break schedules
Attestation. It involves other people's offices, it is seasonal, and it cannot be accelerated by wanting it more. Start it the moment you have your certificates, before you even have an offer if you can.
Appointment availability. This is the one nobody budgets for. Between June and August, slots for the busiest missions disappear, and there is no relationship between how urgent your case is and when a slot appears. Book the moment your file is complete enough to submit, and check the portal daily rather than weekly.
The decision. No mission commits to a date, and the observations you read online are other people's cases. Treat this stage as an unknown with a wide distribution, not as a number — the practical handling is in what to do when your visa is delayed.
Working backwards
Take your intake date and subtract, generously:
- 12 weeks for flights, forex, packing and arrival logistics
- 2The decision window, for which you should allow the longest indicative time the mission publishes, plus a buffer
- 3Up to 8 weeks for an appointment slot in peak season
- 44 weeks for assembling the file after attestation
- 56 weeks for attestation
- 64 weeks for the country-specific pre-step
That arithmetic is why September intakes are effectively planned in January and February, and why a student who receives an offer in June for that September is already making difficult choices. Two country-shaped adjustments
Delhi-route countries. Finland and Bulgaria require a trip to New Delhi, which adds an Indian visa of two to four weeks and a fixed appointment to the chain. Add a month and start the Indian visa first — the details are here.
Permit-first countries. For Finland, Sweden and Denmark the residence permit decision happens before travel, so stage 8 is the permit decision rather than a visa decision, and it tends to be the longest single stage in the whole chain.
The tickets rule
⚠️ Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before your passport is physically back in your hand. Every year students buy early for a good fare, lose the fare when the decision runs late, and then feel pressure to make decisions they should not make. Hold a refundable or changeable booking if you need to show intent, and buy properly once you can.
The same applies to non-refundable accommodation deposits, with one exception: university halls that require early commitment and refund on visa refusal. Read that clause before you pay it.

How long does the whole process take from offer to departure?+
Four to seven months is realistic for most of the nine countries, though it varies with the country, the season and your own file. The stages that dominate are attestation at two to six weeks, appointment availability at zero to eight weeks, and the decision itself, which no mission commits to and which cannot be planned as a fixed period.
When should I buy my flight ticket?+
After your passport is physically back with the visa in it. Buying earlier for a better fare regularly costs students the fare and, worse, creates pressure to make bad decisions when the decision runs late. If you need a booking to show intent, use a refundable or changeable one.
Which stage delays students most often?+
Appointment availability, because nothing about your case influences it. In the June to August peak, slots at the busiest missions can be weeks away, so book the moment your file is complete enough to submit and check the portal daily rather than weekly.
