The three choices you make on the form
Everything about the fee comes down to three boxes on the application. Nothing else in the process changes the price.
| What you choose | Cheaper | Dearer | What a student should normally pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booklet size | 48 pages | 64 pages | 48 pages — a degree does not fill it |
| Validity | 5 years | 10 years | 10 years, so it outlasts the course and the first job |
| Delivery | Regular | Express, then super express | Regular, if you started on time |
In 2026 the published table runs from roughly BDT 4,000 for 48 pages, five years and regular delivery, to around BDT 14,000 for 64 pages, ten years and super express. Each step up in delivery speed adds a few thousand taka. The exact figures, including VAT, are on the e-passport portal, and they change — read the current table there rather than trusting any number in an article, including this one.
How the process actually runs
- 1Apply online at epassport.gov.bd. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your NID, because that is what the office checks against.
- 2Pay the fee by A-challan or through a designated bank, and keep the receipt.
- 3Attend the passport office for biometric enrolment — photograph, fingerprints, signature, and verification of your documents.
- 4Wait, then collect in person with the delivery slip.
The single most useful thing to understand: the processing clock the portal quotes starts at step three, not step one. The gap between submitting the form and getting an enrolment appointment is yours to manage, and in busy months it is not short.
⚠️ Timelines, and why the published ones are optimistic
The portal publishes working-day targets for regular, express and super express delivery. Read them as a floor rather than a forecast. The real elapsed time depends on how quickly you get an enrolment slot, whether your NID and application agree in every field, and on the verification requirements in force at the time — the policy on police verification for e-passports has changed more than once in recent years, so check the notice board on the Department of Immigration and Passports site for the current position rather than relying on what a friend experienced last year.
Plan on the honest version: four to six months before you intend to submit a visa file. Paying for super express to rescue a late start works, but it costs several thousand taka and it does not fix an enrolment appointment you cannot get.
The validity rule embassies apply
Two separate rules, and students routinely satisfy one and fail the other.
- The Schengen rule of thumb: the passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure from the territory, and should have been issued within the previous ten years.
- The practical rule: most missions want the passport to comfortably cover the course, and many will not issue a long-stay visa or a national visa into a passport with only a year or so left.
If your current passport has less than about eighteen months to run when you plan to submit, renew before you apply anywhere — not during. Renewing mid-application creates a separate set of problems, described in renewing your passport in the middle of an application.
The traps
- 1Name and date must match the NID. The office builds the passport from the NID record. If your certificates disagree with your NID, fix that first — see fixing a name mismatch — because a passport issued on the wrong spelling has to be re-issued, and you pay again.
- 2Blank pages. Visas, residence stickers and entry stamps consume pages. A 48-page book is fine for a student; a nearly full old book is not.
- 3Address. The permanent address on the passport is the address your police clearance certificate verification runs against, so it should be an address where you are actually known.
- 4Agents. The application, the payment and the appointment are all online and all free of any intermediary. Anyone charging to arrange them is selling you nothing, and handing over your documents to a broker is how they end up in someone else's file. See fake documents and agency fraud.
Sequence for an application year
- Month 1 — check that the NID, the birth record and the certificates agree. Correct anything that does not.
- Month 2 — apply for the passport, pay, and take the enrolment appointment as early as offered.
- Month 4 — passport in hand; only now start university portals that ask for a passport number, and begin the attestation chain.
- Month 6 onwards — police clearance, medical where required, and the visa file.

Common questions
Should a student take the five-year or the ten-year passport?+
Ten years, in almost every case. It costs more once and it outlasts a bachelor's or master's degree plus any post-study stay, whereas a five-year book will expire mid-course and force a renewal abroad — which is slower and more expensive at a Bangladeshi mission overseas than it is in Dhaka.
How long does a Bangladeshi e-passport really take?+
The portal publishes working-day targets for regular, express and super express delivery, but that clock starts at biometric enrolment rather than at online application, and the wait for an enrolment slot is separate. Budget four to six months before your intended visa submission date, and check the Department of Immigration and Passports notice board for the current verification requirements.
How much passport validity does a European student visa need?+
As a rule of thumb the passport should be valid at least three months beyond your intended departure and have been issued within the previous ten years, but in practice most missions want it to cover the course. If you have less than about eighteen months left, renew before applying rather than during.
Can an agent get my passport faster?+
No. The application, the fee and the appointment are all handled directly through the government portal, and super express delivery is a paid option available to anyone. An intermediary adds cost and hands your identity documents to a third party.
