Hungary is two different budgets wearing the same country name. Self-funded, it is a mid-priced Central European destination that costs about half what Finland does. On a Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, tuition disappears entirely and money starts flowing the other way. Almost every misleading number written about Hungary comes from quoting one of those two situations and not saying which.
Here is both, separately.
The self-funded first year
| Line | Low | High | What moves it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | EUR 0 | EUR 5,000 | Programme and university; medicine sits far above this |
| Living, twelve months | EUR 4,800 | EUR 7,200 | Budapest against Debrecen, Pecs or Szeged |
| First-year total | EUR 4,800 | EUR 12,200 | |
| Funds to evidence | about EUR 6,000 | No published figure — see below |
Only Bulgaria is cheaper to live in among the nine countries we work with. A monthly HUF 200,000, which is roughly EUR 500, is the figure usually used as the benchmark for a student's means.
The funds requirement nobody publishes
This is the part that catches people out. Hungary's immigration authority, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, does not publish a fixed euro amount for a student residence permit. It requires evidence of sufficient means to support yourself for the period of stay, and the case officer decides whether what you have shown is sufficient.
That is genuinely different from Italy, where a circular names EUR 10,179.85, or Denmark, where the figure is DKK 89,112. What it means in practice:
- Plan on roughly EUR 6,000 for a self-funded year, and more if you can.
- Because there is no published threshold, the quality of the file matters more than in a country with one. A clean six-month bank history with an explained source of funds is worth more than a large balance that appeared last week.
- Anyone quoting you an exact Hungarian minimum is quoting a rule of thumb, not a regulation. Ask them to name the page it comes from.
The document side of that is the same everywhere: see bank statements for a European student visa and the solvency certificate guide.
A month of living, by line
| Item | Per month | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation, hostel or dormitory | EUR 120-300 | University dormitories are the cheapest housing of the nine |
| Food | EUR 120-200 | |
| Transport | EUR 15-35 | Student passes are very cheap |
| Phone, books, personal | EUR 50-100 | |
| Total | EUR 400-600 |
One caution that applies to every euro figure on this page: Hungary bills in forint, not euro. Tuition, rent and the dormitory fee are all set in HUF, so the euro conversion here moves with the exchange rate and a budget built on one month's rate can be several per cent out by spring.
What you spend in Bangladesh, before you fly
| Item | Typical | When |
|---|---|---|
| University application fee | EUR 100-150 per application | At application |
| First-year or first-instalment tuition | EUR 3,000-6,000 | Before the visa is issued |
| Type D visa fee plus VFS service charge | about EUR 110 and up | At submission |
| Health insurance, Schengen minimum EUR 30,000 cover | Varies | Before the visa |
| Air ticket, Dhaka to Budapest | BDT 80,000-1,10,000 | After the visa |
Note the second row. Self-funded students normally pay tuition, or a first instalment of it, before the residence permit is decided. That is money committed ahead of an outcome you do not yet have, so read the university's refund policy before you transfer anything, and use a documented banking channel — sending tuition from Bangladesh covers the routes that leave a paper trail.
What the scholarship actually changes
Stipendium Hungaricum is a Hungarian government scholarship with places allocated to Bangladesh. It covers tuition in full and adds a monthly stipend and a contribution to accommodation. On paper it turns a EUR 12,000 year into something close to self-sustaining.
Three honest caveats:
- 1The deadline is January for a September start. Almost every strong applicant who misses out simply started too late.
- 2It is competitive, and there is no published acceptance rate. Anyone quoting you one has made it up.
- 3The stipend is a living contribution, not a salary. It does not remove the need to show funds at the residence-permit stage, and it does not cover the flight, the insurance or the Dhaka-side paperwork.
The application walkthrough is in the Stipendium Hungaricum guide, and the failure modes — which are mostly avoidable — are in why Stipendium Hungaricum applications fail. If you miss it, the universities run their own smaller schemes: Hungarian university scholarships beyond Stipendium.
The parts of the plan that are weaker
Hungarian is a hard language and is barely spoken outside the country, so part-time options are narrower than in Malta or Cyprus. The job-seeking permit after graduation is nine months, against Italy's twelve, Sweden's twelve and Denmark's three years. Neither of those is a reason to rule Hungary out; both are reasons not to build a career plan on staying.
What to do next
- 1Run your programme through the cost calculator with and without a scholarship, so you can see how much of the plan depends on winning one.
- 2Put the January Stipendium deadline in your calendar now, then work backwards to when your documents must be attested.
- 3Read the university's tuition refund policy before transferring a first instalment.
- 4If cost is the deciding factor, compare against Italy, Hungary or Bulgaria on a tight budget.

Common questions
How much does one year in Hungary cost a self-funded Bangladeshi student?+
Roughly EUR 4,800 to 12,200 in actual spending: tuition of EUR 0-5,000 plus EUR 400-600 a month to live. Medicine and dentistry sit well above that band. On top of it, plan on evidencing about EUR 6,000 of available funds for the residence permit, and budget separately for the flight, insurance and Bangladesh-side paperwork.
What is the exact proof-of-funds amount for a Hungarian student visa?+
There isn't a published one. Hungary's immigration authority requires evidence of sufficient means for the period of stay rather than naming a euro figure, so the case officer assesses your file. About EUR 6,000 for a self-funded year is the working assumption, and a clean, explained six-month bank history matters more here than in countries that publish a threshold.
Does Stipendium Hungaricum really make Hungary free?+
It removes tuition entirely and adds a monthly stipend and a housing contribution, so the recurring cost of studying largely disappears. It does not cover your flight, your insurance, the Dhaka-side attestation chain, or the funds you may still need to evidence. It is also competitive with a January deadline, so budget as though you will not win it.
Are Hungarian costs really in euros?+
No. Tuition, rent and dormitory fees are all set in Hungarian forint, and every euro figure on this page is a conversion. If the forint moves against the taka between your planning and your payment, your real cost moves with it — so recheck the rate before each instalment rather than budgeting once.
