The shape of Hungarian tuition

Hungary has two almost unrelated fee markets, and confusing them is why students arrive at wildly different answers to the same question.

Everything outside the medical block is cheap by European standards. Everything inside it is not, and no Hungarian medical faculty is inexpensive - if you have read that Hungary is a cheap place to study medicine, the comparison being made is with the United Kingdom, not with Bulgaria.

Where the low fees actually are

Broadly: outside Budapest. The capital's institutions price higher, and its living costs are meaningfully higher too, so the two effects compound.

The regional public universities that Bangladeshi students most often enter, and which sit at the lower end of the non-medical band, are the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged and the University of Pecs. Beyond those three, the University of Miskolc, Szechenyi Istvan University in Gyor, the University of Dunaujvaros, the University of Pannonia in Veszprem, the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Budapest Business University all run English-taught programmes at the cheaper end.

In Budapest, BME and ELTE are the strongest names and are priced accordingly, though still far below Finland or Sweden.

⚠️ Fees are set per programme by each institution and revised for each intake, and Hungary bills in forint, so a euro figure quoted anywhere is a conversion that moves. The number to plan against is the one on the programme page at the university's own site, in forint, on the day you read it. The official national portal, Study in Hungary, is the place to start the search.

When you get to that page, read three things rather than one. Which fee applies to you: Hungarian pages often list a state-financed place and a self-financed one, and an international applicant paying their own way is looking at the self-financed figure. Whether it is charged per semester or per year: a semester figure doubles, and a fee that looked cheap in a comparison table sometimes was not. What the one-off charges are: most institutions add a registration or entrance-procedure fee, and several charge separately for the entrance examination itself. None of those is large on its own, and together they are worth a few hundred euro a year.

Living costs, which are the larger number

At EUR 400-600 a month outside Budapest, Hungary is one of the two or three cheapest countries on our list. Twelve months of that is EUR 4,800-7,200, which for most non-medical students exceeds the tuition. A plan built on the fee alone will be short by more than it is long.

The genuinely cheapest route is a scholarship

Stipendium Hungaricum is a Hungarian government scholarship with places allocated to Bangladesh specifically rather than thrown into a global pool. It covers tuition in full, adds a monthly stipend, contributes to accommodation and includes medical insurance. That makes it, in cost terms, cheaper than any self-funded university in the country by a wide margin.

The catch is the calendar. Applications open in the autumn and close in January for a September start, roughly nine months ahead. The most common reason a strong candidate misses out is discovering the scheme after the deadline. Universities also run their own smaller awards, covered in Hungarian university scholarships beyond Stipendium. We would say plainly what we say about every competitive scheme: budget as though you will not win it. A plan that only works with a scholarship has a single point of failure.

What the fee does not include

• Funds to evidence for the residence permit: about EUR 6,000 for a self-funded year. Hungary's immigration authority publishes no fixed figure - it asks you to prove you can cover subsistence, accommodation, return travel and healthcare from lawful income, which means showing more is safer, not riskier.
• The permit fee, paid at the consulate.
• Health insurance, required in the file.
• A medical certificate, which Hungary asks for and most other countries do not.
• Registration and, on some programmes, a one-off entrance examination fee.

Cheap tuition is not the whole decision

Two honest counterweights. Hungarian is a hard language spoken almost nowhere else, so part-time work is more limited than in Malta or Cyprus. And the post-study window is nine months, shorter than Denmark's three years or Finland's two. Hungary is excellent value for the degree itself; it is a weaker choice if the plan depends on staying and working afterwards. The comparison is in Italy, Hungary or Bulgaria on a tight budget.
