Search "hungary student working hours" and you will get a number within the first three results. You will also get a different number in the fourth. Neither page will tell you where its figure came from, and at least one of them is quoting a law that no longer exists.
That is not an accident. Hungary replaced its whole framework for the entry and residence of non-EU nationals with effect from 1 January 2024. Guides written before then are describing a repealed act, and because they were written confidently they still read as authoritative. This article does the opposite thing: it separates what is genuinely settled from what is not, and tells you which office settles the rest for your particular permit.
What is settled and what is not

The row we expect to annoy people is the second one. We are aware that stating "we will not publish a number" is a worse experience than stating a number. It is also the only honest option available to us: our own dataset records Hungary's term-time entitlement as a set number of hours permitted per week without naming the figure, precisely because the figure moved and we have not re-verified it against a Hungarian government page since. Publishing a plausible-looking number would make this page feel more useful and make it worth less.
Why the number is worth asking about rather than guessing
There are three reasons the hours limit matters more in Hungary than the question sounds.
It is a condition of your residence, not an employment rule. Exceeding a permitted work limit in Hungary is not a payroll problem; it is a problem with the permit that lets you stay. The downside of guessing wrong is not a fine. It is your status.
Your employer will not know it. A Budapest café manager hiring an international student is not an immigration adviser, and will generally accept whatever you tell them. The obligation sits with you.
A recruiter has an incentive to round it up. An agency selling Hungary as a cheap destination benefits from a high number. Ask any agency quoting you an hours figure to name the page it comes from. If they cannot, they are quoting each other.
The paperwork chain before your first shift
This is the part almost nobody writes down, and it is more actionable than the hours question, because it is the same for everyone.

Allow weeks, not days, for steps 1 to 4. A student who lands in early September and expects to be earning by late September has not accounted for any of this.
If you hold a Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship
Read your scholarship contract on the question of paid work before you accept a job. We are not telling you it forbids anything. We are telling you that a scholarship agreement is a separate document from your residence permit, carrying its own terms, and students routinely assume the permit is the only document that governs them. If the contract is silent or ambiguous, ask the Tempus Public Foundation, which administers the scheme, rather than asking your classmates.
What the language actually does to your options
The legal question and the practical question are different, and in Hungary the practical one is harder.
Hungarian is not related to the languages around it and it is not a language you will pick up incidentally in a semester. For most customer-facing work — retail, cafés, reception — it is close to a requirement. What is genuinely open to an English speaker is narrower and concentrated in Budapest: shared service and business-process centres that recruit in English, tourism-facing roles in the centre of the city, and university jobs such as research assistance, lab demonstrating or departmental work.
The university towns are the sharper version of this problem. Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs are cheaper places to live and have far less English-language work than Budapest. If part-time earnings are central to your plan, that is a reason to think about the city, not just the course. One thing we will not say
We will not tell you what you can earn in Hungary. Hungary bills and pays in forint, the statutory minimum wage is reset annually by government decree, and an hourly figure written in euro in September is a different figure by spring. More importantly, an earnings estimate multiplied by an hours figure we have just declined to publish would be a number built on a number we do not have.
What we will say plainly: no part-time job in Hungary pays for a degree. Every embassy asks for proof of funds precisely because it does not expect you to work your way through, and a budget that only balances with student earnings is a budget a case officer will read as a risk.
After graduation, honestly
The nine-month job-seeking residence permit is genuinely one of the better features of the Hungarian route, and it is settled. Three caveats belong next to it.
It is applied for, not automatic. It is nine months to find work, not nine months of the right to work at any job you like. And it does not convert itself — you convert by finding an employer and applying again.
