Students who have cleared every visa hurdle get stuck on this apparently simple step, because it has to be done from Bangladesh, unseen, in an unfamiliar market. Here is the country picture and the scam checklist.
Visa proof versus a real home
Most visa or permit files need "proof of accommodation" — a dormitory confirmation, a rental contract or, in some cases, a short-term booking. The strategy:

The scam checklist — any one of these is enough to walk away
- Rent suspiciously below market plus "many people are interested, pay the deposit today"
- No viewing possible — "I am abroad, I will courier the keys"
- Payment demanded by Western Union, MoneyGram, cryptocurrency or gift cards before the contract
- A deposit requested without a contract, or on a draft with no names or address
- Beautiful photographs that a reverse image search finds elsewhere at a different address
- A landlord reluctant to show identification or proof of ownership
The safe habit: start from the university's official housing page; check with the Bangladeshi student group in that city; ask for a live video viewing; if possible, take a hostel for the first month and finalise after arrival; pay only by a traceable bank route.
Deposits and contracts
- Deposits in Europe are usually one to three months' rent — stated in the contract, with a receipt
- Read the notice period (one to three months), whether utilities are included, and the subletting rules
- Address registration in many countries requires the landlord's paperwork — informal "cash rent" without a contract blocks official processes later
- Photograph the flat on the day you move in; it settles deposit disputes when you leave
Sharing a flat
Sharing is the practical route for most Bangladeshi students — costs drop to EUR 200–350. Two checks: that your name is on the contract (without it, address registration is a problem), and that the head tenant is actually permitted to sublet.

Do I need to rent a flat for the whole year before the visa?+
No. In most countries a dormitory confirmation or a verifiable arrangement for the first months satisfies the visa file (check your destination's rule). Paying a year's rent in advance for a flat you have never seen is not caution — it is the single biggest scam exposure in the whole process.
What if I do not get a dormitory place?+
No panic. Submit the visa file with an acceptable temporary arrangement — the university housing service, a verifiable booking — and find the real flat in the first weeks after arrival through the local Bangladeshi student network. Almost every university city has one, and a referral from it is the safest route there is.
Is sending a deposit from abroad ever safe?+
To a university's own dormitory or official partner, yes — invoiced bank payments are normal there. The risk is private landlords: no money without a live video viewing, a contract and proof of ownership, and none at all if payment is requested by Western Union, cryptocurrency or gift cards.
