Are National University and private university degrees accepted in Europe?

"My degree is from National University, Europe will not take it" is one of the most repeated pieces of misinformation in Bangladeshi study-abroad advice, and every year it stops qualified students from applying at all.

What a European admissions office actually checks

They checkIn your case
Is the institution recognised by the national authority? Is it on the UGC list
What level is the qualification?Bachelor's or master's, and how many years
How many ECTS is it equivalent to?3 years ≈ 180, 4 years ≈ 240
What are the grades?CGPA and class/division
What was the medium of instruction?English allows an MOI certificate

"Public or private" and "national or autonomous" are not on that list. The evaluator's question is whether the degree is a valid qualification within Bangladesh's state system — and National University, the country's largest state university, plainly is.

So where did the belief come from?

Three separate things got conflated:

  1. 1Degree length. National University oversees both three-year pass and four-year honours programmes. The difficulty is with the first — because of its length, not its institution. See three-year versus four-year.
  2. 2Competition. Students from top public universities do have an edge in scholarship competitions. That is true, but "less competitive" and "not accepted" are different statements.
  3. 3Paperwork friction. Obtaining credit-bearing transcripts and attestation through college-affiliated institutions takes longer, so applications stall. That is an administrative problem, not a recognition problem.

Where a real problem does exist

⚠️ Institutions without UGC approval, or running programmes beyond their approved scope. This surfaces during verification in Europe and applications are cancelled.

⚠️ Unapproved outer campuses. The main campus may be approved while a branch is not, and the campus named on your certificate matters.

⚠️ "Affiliated" foreign-branded programmes. Some degrees awarded in Bangladesh under a foreign university's name are not recognised in that foreign country either. Travelling on one of these is risky.

Verify it yourself in five minutes: the University Grants Commission publishes the current list of approved public and private universities. Check your institution, your programme and your campus on that list before applying. Not doing so risks the entire application.

An advantage private university students have

Graduates of UGC-recognised private universities carry two practical advantages:

  • English medium, so an MOI certificate is easy to obtain and some programmes waive IELTS (details)
  • Credit-based transcripts, with semesters and credit hours, which convert to ECTS cleanly

National University graduates have to work harder on both — but both are solvable, not impossible.

What to do

  1. 1Verify your institution, programme and campus on the UGC list
  2. 2Confirm whether your degree is three or four years
  3. 3Obtain a transcript with credit hours
  4. 4If your medium was English, get an MOI certificate
  5. 5Email two or three admissions offices and get written confirmation — do not assume

Common questions

Is a National University degree accepted in Europe?+

Yes. National University is Bangladesh's largest state university and its four-year honours degree is accepted. Difficulty arises with three-year pass degrees — because of length, not institution.

Are private university degrees a problem?+

Not if the university is UGC-recognised; in fact English-medium teaching and credit-based transcripts are advantages. The genuine problems are institutions without UGC approval, unapproved outer campuses, and unrecognised foreign-branded affiliated programmes.

How do I verify my institution?+

The University Grants Commission publishes the current list of approved public and private universities. Check your institution, your specific programme and your campus against it before applying.
