The short answer that saves you a week
If you have applied for a Gulf work visa or a Malaysian student visa, you will expect a mandatory medical at a designated centre, with a certificate the mission will not proceed without.
European student applications generally do not work that way. For the nine countries we work with, a routine long-stay student visa or residence permit does not normally require a medical examination as part of the visa file. What every one of them does require is health insurance, which people conflate with a medical certificate and which is covered separately in health insurance for a European student visa.

Where a medical really does appear
Health-programme enrolment. Medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy faculties across Europe typically ask incoming students for a fitness-to-study certificate and serology — most commonly hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody status, and often evidence of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella, plus tuberculosis screening. This is a university and faculty requirement rather than a visa one, and it arrives in the enrolment pack after admission. Clinical placement. Even where enrolment was straightforward, a hospital placement will have its own occupational-health requirements, and these are set locally. Expect to repeat tests after arrival regardless of what you bring, because a placement provider generally wants results from a laboratory it recognises.
Getting the paperwork in Bangladesh
Three practical points, all cheap to act on before departure and awkward afterwards.
- 1Ask for everything in English. A Bangladeshi immunisation record is normally in Bengali, and a laboratory report may be too. Reports issued in English cost the same and save a translation — the wider question of what needs translating is in certified translation in Dhaka.
- 2Assemble a vaccination summary. Ask a physician to write a single dated summary listing what you have received and when, with the laboratory reports attached. Childhood records are frequently incomplete; where a record is missing, a titre test showing immunity is worth more than a note saying the vaccine was probably given.
- 3A yellow fever certificate is only about your route. Europe does not require yellow fever vaccination from travellers arriving from Bangladesh. It becomes relevant only if you transit or arrive from a country where the requirement applies, and the international certificate is issued by designated centres.
What a medical certificate is not
It is not a substitute for health insurance, it does not replace the residence-permit health cover you will be asked for on arrival, and it does not shorten any queue.
It also does not settle anything about practising. A European medical, dental, nursing or pharmacy degree is a qualification, not a licence. Practising in Europe requires registration with that country's regulator, which normally means language certification at a professional level and, for a non-EU qualification, an adaptation or examination route. Coming home and practising in Bangladesh requires recognition and registration by the Bangladeshi regulator, on its terms. Neither follows automatically from graduating, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
A short pre-departure list
- 1Read the mission's current checklist and confirm whether a medical is listed at all.
- 2Read the university's enrolment pack, which is where health-programme requirements actually live.
- 3Get a dated vaccination summary in English, with laboratory reports.
- 4Arrange the health insurance the visa requires — a separate document with its own rules.
- 5Carry copies of everything and expect to repeat tests locally if you have a clinical placement. The rest of the arrival paperwork is in pre-departure and your first week in Europe.
