The decision is made by your transcript, not by preference
Most people ask this question the wrong way round. They ask which route is better. The useful question is which route your existing qualification actually reaches, because for a large share of Bangladeshi applicants only one of the two doors is open.
European admission is measured in ECTS credits. One full-time academic year is 60 ECTS, a bachelor's is 180 to 240, and a master's is 60 to 120. So a master's entry rule written as "a bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS" is asking a simple question: have you completed at least three years of full-time higher education at honours level?
A four-year honours degree, a BSc in Engineering, a BBA or an MBBS answers yes almost everywhere. A three-year honours degree usually answers yes. A three-year pass degree frequently answers no, because European credential evaluators treat pass and honours as different levels. That single distinction, explained in detail in the three-year versus four-year guide, decides this article for most readers before they have chosen a country.
The two routes side by side
| Second bachelor's | Master's | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 3 years, sometimes 4 | 1 to 2 years |
| Credits | 180 to 240 ECTS | 60 to 120 ECTS |
| Entry requirement | HSC or equivalent | a recognised bachelor's, usually 180 ECTS or more |
| First-year cost across our nine | EUR 4,800 to 30,400 | EUR 4,800 to 30,400 |
| Total cost, tuition plus living | roughly three first years | roughly one to two |
| Scholarship supply | thin at bachelor's level | much wider, including Erasmus Mundus |
| Post-study clock | starts three years later | starts sooner |
| The visa officer's reaction | needs a real explanation | routine |
The costs per year are the same in both columns because they are the same countries. The difference is the multiplier. A second bachelor's in Bulgaria at the cheap end is roughly EUR 21,600 to 33,000 across three years; a one-year master's in the same country is EUR 7,200 to 11,000. That gap is the decision, and you can put your own numbers into the cost calculator.
When a second bachelor's is genuinely right
1. A three-year pass degree with no bridge. If evaluators will not treat your degree as 180 ECTS and you have no preliminary master's on top of it, a master's application is not a long shot, it is closed. A fresh bachelor's is then the only honest route.
2. A polytechnic diploma. A diploma is post-secondary, not a bachelor's. Some universities award credit for it and shorten the degree, which is the outcome worth chasing. The routes are set out in the diploma holders guide.
3. A genuine change of field into something your degree cannot enter. You cannot enter a master's in civil engineering with a BBA. If the new field is where your career has to be, three years is the price.
When it is three years thrown away
- You already hold a four-year honours degree and simply want a better-known university name. The master's reaches the same university faster and cheaper.
- Your CGPA is weak. A second bachelor's does not erase the first one; universities still ask for the full academic record. The fixes for a weak transcript are in the low CGPA guide.
- You want more time in the country. That is a residence argument dressed as an academic one, and a consular officer reads it exactly that way.
The question you will be asked
An applicant who already holds a degree and applies for a lower or equal level of study attracts a specific question at the interview: why are you going backwards? It is a fair question and there is a good answer when the reason is real. Say what your current qualification cannot do and what the new one opens. Do not say that you want to experience Europe.
⚠️ The weaker your academic reason, the more the file starts to look like a residence plan rather than a study plan, and that is the single most common ground for refusing a student visa.
Regulated professions, before you decide
If the new field is medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary science, law, psychology, teaching, social work or architecture, understand this first: a European degree is not a licence to practise, in Europe or in Bangladesh. Each of those professions is regulated separately, with its own registration body, its own exams and usually a local-language requirement. Check the EU's regulated professions database and the relevant Bangladeshi council before committing three years to it.
What to do this week
- 1Write down your degree exactly as it appears on the certificate, including whether it says pass or honours, and how many years it took.
- 2Open two master's programmes you would want and read their admission requirements line by line. They state the ECTS or years needed.
- 3Email one admissions office and ask directly whether your qualification meets the requirement. This is the least-used and most decisive step, and the answer is free.
- 4Only if the answer is no should you price a second bachelor's. Then run both totals in the cost calculator before deciding.

Common questions
Can I do a master's in Europe with a three-year pass degree?+
Often not directly. European evaluators distinguish pass from honours, and a pass bachelor's is frequently placed below the 180 ECTS level a master's requires. A one-year preliminary master's on top of it usually solves the problem. The reliable way to find out is to email the specific admissions office with your exact qualification and ask.
Is a second bachelor's cheaper anywhere in Europe?+
The per-year cost is the same as any other degree in that country, so the cheapest options are the same ones: Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy and Greece, at roughly EUR 4,800 to 13,600 for a first year. The issue is that you pay it three times instead of once or twice.
Will a European bachelor's let me practise medicine or nursing back in Bangladesh?+
Not by itself. Those professions are regulated separately in every country, including Bangladesh, and registration normally requires its own examination and sometimes a language qualification. Verify the registration route with the relevant council before you enrol, not after you graduate.
