Who Bulgaria genuinely suits

The student for whom money is the actual constraint. Living costs of EUR 350-500 a month are the lowest here by a real margin, and tuition of EUR 3,000-5,000 keeps the first-year total below almost every alternative — for a degree with full EU recognition. Sofia is among the cheapest EU capitals a student can live in.

The medical applicant who is not going to get into a Bangladeshi public medical college. Bulgarian medicine and dentistry are established, EU-recognised, and taught in English to international cohorts. The Medical University of Sofia is the best-known. Entry normally runs through an entrance examination in biology and chemistry, so it is competitive rather than open — plan the exam as part of the application, not an afterthought. The student without an IELTS score in hand. A large number of Bulgarian universities administer their own online English assessment, and some accept a Medium of Instruction certificate. The commonly stated requirement is IELTS 5.5, but it is frequently not the only route.

The student who wants Schengen without the Western European price. Bulgaria became a full Schengen member on 1 January 2025 and adopted the euro on 1 January 2026 at a fixed rate of BGN 1.95583 to the euro, so fees and daily costs are quoted directly in euros and there is no currency conversion step or exchange-rate exposure.

The thing nobody puts in a brochure

Eurostat counted 9 Bangladeshi students in Bulgarian tertiary education in 2024. For scale, the same source counts 2,622 in Finland and 883 in Italy. That is a real, practical difference, and it cuts both ways.

What it costs you: no senior to ask which bank opens an account fastest, no established community for the first Eid away from home, no informal network passing along room shares and part-time shifts. Those things are not sentimental. They are the machinery that makes a first year abroad survivable, and in Bulgaria you would be building it rather than joining it.

What it buys you: small international cohorts, closer contact with faculty, and none of the crowding you get where thousands of applicants chase the same programme.

Do not read that 9 as a comment on visa outcomes, on quality, or on anything a consultancy did. It counts people enrolled, nothing else.

Three cities, and what changed in January

Most international programmes sit in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. Sofia is the capital and the one place with a real English-language job market, thanks to a large outsourcing and technology sector. Plovdiv and Varna are smaller, cheaper and quieter, and Varna is where the maritime faculties are.

The euro changeover on 1 January 2026 removed a step rather than a cost. Bulgaria adopted the euro at a fixed rate of BGN 1.95583 to EUR 1, so tuition, rent and the funds requirement are all quoted in euros now, there is no lev conversion to track, and there is no exchange-rate gap between a euro fee and a lev income. Prices did not fall because of it. Anyone telling you Bulgaria became cheaper in January is describing a rounding effect, not a discount.

Do not choose Bulgaria if

1. 1Your plan is to work in-country after graduating. The graduate job market is small and salaries are low by EU standards. Bulgaria is an affordable route to an EU degree, not an obvious place to build an immediate career.
2. 2Your field is not medicine, business, computer science or engineering. English-taught provision outside those is thin.
3. 3You want an established Bangladeshi community around you. Nine students, on the most recent Eurostat count. Be honest with yourself about whether that matters to you, because it matters to most people more than they expect.
4. 4You are assuming medicine is an open door because the fees are low. There is an entrance examination and it is a real filter.
5. 5A new alphabet is a barrier for you. Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic, which makes street signs, forms and shop labels a steeper first month than in Malta or Cyprus.
