Bulgaria vs Cyprus for medicine: the honest cost comparison

What the six years actually cost

Tuition is the figure agents round down most often. Take it from the university's own English fees page, dated, and take nothing from a brochure.

Bulgaria: cheaper, and gated by an exam

The best-known public medical universities teaching in English are Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Pleven, with medical faculties at several other institutions. Sofia was founded in 1917 and is the country's oldest.

Bulgaria is one of the cheapest countries in the EU to live in, at EUR 350-500 a month, and medicine is the exception to that rule on tuition. A general bachelor's degree there runs EUR 3,000-5,000 a year; medicine runs double to triple that. Anyone advertising "affordable MBBS in Europe" is quoting the country's reputation rather than this programme's price.

The real gate is not the paperwork, it is the written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, in English, which several universities now run remotely. Prepare for it properly. Cyprus: more expensive, smaller cohorts, no Schengen

Medicine in the Republic of Cyprus is taught at private universities, most visibly the University of Nicosia and European University Cyprus. These are properly accredited EU institutions and the degrees are EU medical qualifications. They also cost considerably more, because a private university has no public subsidy behind its fee.

Two things people get wrong here. First, Cyprus is not in the Schengen area, so a Cypriot residence permit does not let you travel Europe freely during a six-year degree — check that against how often you expect to move around. Second, some Cypriot medical schools run graduate-entry routes of around four years for applicants who already hold a relevant bachelor's degree, which changes the total cost calculation completely if you qualify. Ask the admissions office directly whether you do.

The requirement neither of them removes

⚠️ A European medical degree is not a licence to practise, in Europe or in Bangladesh. Medicine is a regulated profession everywhere.

To register and practise in Bangladesh, a foreign medical graduate must satisfy the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council: in practice a one-year internship in an approved Bangladeshi hospital plus the registration qualifying examination, held twice a year. That applies identically to a Bulgarian graduate and a Cypriot one. It is not a formality and it is not something a consultancy can shortcut.

To practise in an EU country, you additionally need registration with that country's medical regulator and, almost always, professional-level competence in its language. Automatic recognition of medical qualifications across the EU under Directive 2005 slash 36 slash EC is what an EU degree buys you — the language and the registration are still yours to earn.

The honest recommendation

Bulgaria is the better value if the objective is an EU medical degree at the lowest defensible cost and you can pass a biology and chemistry entrance exam. The difference over six years is large enough to fund a specialisation afterwards.

Cyprus makes sense if you want smaller cohorts and a more hands-on private-university structure, if you qualify for a graduate-entry route that shortens the degree, or if you already have family or a support network on the island. It does not make sense purely as a fallback for someone who did not prepare for Bulgaria's entrance exam, because you will pay a great deal extra for that convenience.

Neither makes sense if the household cannot fund six years without borrowing at a rate the family cannot service. Medicine is the longest and least flexible commitment in this market, and the single most heavily brokered — read agency fraud and fake documents before you pay anyone a deposit.

Do these four things first
