Studying in Bulgaria straight after HSC: the free route and the one almost everyone takes

The short answer

Yes. A completed higher secondary qualification is what a Bulgarian bachelor's degree asks for, and a Bangladeshi HSC, Alim or A-Level is that qualification. A foundation or pathway year is not a Bulgarian requirement — treat anyone who calls one compulsory as selling you a year you do not need.

The caveat is not about your marks. Bulgaria is the cheapest predictable country of the nine we work in, because nothing in its price is conditional. But that headline covers two different routes quoted as though they were one, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake an HSC-leaver makes here.

Two Bulgarias, and you are almost certainly looking at the second one

There is the Bulgaria nearly every Bangladeshi student actually attends: an English-taught programme, paid for by the family. And there is the state quota — small, taught in Bulgarian, applied for through a diplomatic mission rather than the university, and normally carrying a compulsory preparatory year of language before the degree begins.

Read the first row again, because it decides your whole degree. The free route is not a cheaper version of the English-taught one — it is a different degree in a different language, which means sitting engineering, law or medical examinations in Bulgarian, in Cyrillic script. That is a fair choice to make deliberately at eighteen, and a disaster to stumble into. What the annual call contains is in the Bulgarian government scholarship quota, explained.

That preparatory year is a condition of a scholarship, not an entry requirement, and it is not the foundation year an agent may be quoting at you. Bulgaria asks no foundation year of anybody.

So budget as self-funding an English-taught programme. A quota place, if it comes, is a bonus rather than a plan.

Twelve years of schooling, and where that stops being enough

European bachelor admission rests on twelve years of prior schooling, and HSC, Alim and A-Levels all clear it. Two clarifications matter more than the rule.

SSC alone does not qualify, in Bulgaria or anywhere else in this group. If you finished class ten and are offered a bachelor's admission in Europe, read can you study in Europe after SSC before paying anybody. An Alim or madrasah stream is a different and more hopeful question: madrasah and Alim qualifications in European admission.

Being eligible is not being admitted. The school-leaving test is one gate; the programme's own subjects and marks are another. For medicine and dentistry expect a written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, sat on the university's calendar rather than yours. Applicants are generally expected to be 18 or over, a scheduling detail rather than a barrier at the usual HSC age: is there an age limit on a European student visa. What Bulgaria adds on top of the HSC

Four things, and only one of them is yours to hurry.

A ministry certificate you do not apply for. Bulgaria does not let a university admit a non-EU student on its own say-so: admission is finalised through the Ministry of Education and Science, and your university applies for the certificate using your attested documents. You cannot file it, chase it or pay to accelerate it, and no per-file timescale is published. Your only lever is how early those documents are ready — which is why attestation is the first job in a Bulgarian file, not the last. English, but not necessarily IELTS. Across Bulgarian English-taught programmes we observe a band around 5.5; many universities run their own online English test, and some accept a medium of instruction letter. That is our observation, not a national rule, so believe the programme's own admissions page over any summary. An apostille instead of a legalisation chain. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 30 March 2025 and Bulgaria accepts one, making this file shorter than a Danish, Greek or Finnish one, where objections under Article 12 mean the full consular chain still applies.

A visa decided in New Delhi. Bulgaria has no embassy in Bangladesh, so the type D student visa is applied for and interviewed in person in New Delhi: an Indian visa, a flight, a place to stay, and a second trip at your own cost if a document is missing. The calendar, and the month you are already late for

Bulgaria publishes no national application deadline. Each university sets its own, so anyone quoting a single Bulgaria-wide date is guessing, usually from another country's calendar. Only the bottom row below is a published fact; everything above it is our working-back plan, and we have attached no duration to the two steps nobody publishes one for.

May is the month to measure yourself against. If it is June, you have no offer and your certificates are not attested, this September is not your intake. EU law caps a decision on a complete student application at 90 days, but the clock starts only when the file is complete — and a Bulgarian file is not complete without the ministry certificate. Build your calendar as certificate time plus decision time, never as 90 days in total.

Applying while your HSC result is still pending

You can, and you should. Bulgarian universities routinely make conditional offers on predicted or partial results, then require the official certificate before enrolment — so the waiting months are the wrong time to sit still. What nobody waives is that certificate at the visa stage: the university will wait, the embassy will not. What it actually costs

The funds figure is a rule, not a fee. Bulgarian law says your monthly means may not fall below the national minimum wage, EUR 620 a month in 2026, so about EUR 7,440 for a year. Pegged to the wage, it moves when the wage moves — check the figure for the year you apply. And there is no blocked account: you evidence the money rather than surrender control of it, so the questions are about provenance, not deposit. Then the Bangladesh side, which no tuition table shows. For a file decided in Delhi, plan on roughly BDT 3-5 lakh before you leave: ticket BDT 70,000-120,000; attestation, translation and legalisation BDT 10,000-30,000; courier BDT 4,000-9,000. One structural note. Bulgaria is an EU member, a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025, and it adopted the euro in January 2026 — three separate facts. The number Bulgaria does not publish

If your plan is to pay for the degree by working, this is the most important paragraph on the page. Bulgaria permits limited part-time work under specified conditions and publishes no weekly hours figure we would put our name to, so we publish none either. Any site handing you a crisp number of hours for Bulgaria copied it from another country — and you would build a whole degree's budget on it.

Who answers it for your case: the Employment Agency, which governs labour-market access for non-EU nationals, and the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, which issues your residence card and sets your conditions of stay. Nobody can lawfully pay you before that card and its personal number exist, and both arrive after you land. Two further honest unknowns: no processing time is published for the admission certificate, and no authority publishes a student-visa success rate, for Bulgaria or any country. A date or a percentage offered to you as fact was invented. The useful version of that question is why Bulgaria student visas are refused.

Who should not go to Bulgaria straight after HSC

The student who has to earn from the first month. Wages are low — the national minimum wage is EUR 620 a month in 2026, the same figure your funds are measured against — no student hours figure is published, and every shop sign is in Cyrillic, a real barrier to the counter jobs people assume are waiting. The family that cannot show about EUR 7,440 a year on top of tuition, plus the Delhi trip. The money leaves Bangladesh before any decision is made, and does not come back if the answer is no.

The student who wants the free route but not the language. The quota is Bulgarian-taught with a preparatory year in front of it. If you would resent that year, taking it to save money is how people abandon a degree in year two.

The student whose subject is not taught in English there. Bulgarian universities teach medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, business and computer science in English; a narrower subject may exist only in Bulgarian. It changes almost every answer above: an entrance examination in biology and chemistry, a longer degree, tuition above the ordinary public band, and a licensing process after graduation, separate from the degree everywhere.
