Bulgaria's intakes and deadlines: when to start, and what is already too late

The short answer

Bulgaria runs two intakes a year: September to October, which is the main one, and February, which is limited. Those are published and settled.

Beyond them, there is no national application deadline. Italy publishes one date for the whole country; Bulgaria publishes nothing equivalent. Three separate dates bind you instead, and they come from three different institutions:

1. 1Your university's own application window — different at every institution, published on its own admissions page. This is the only real deadline you can actually read.
2. 2The Ministry of Education and Science admission certificate — no published date at all, because it is not your application.
3. 3The New Delhi appointment and decision — the embassy's calendar, and before that the Indian visa's.

Six clocks run at once, and people watch one

The third row is why this page exists. A non-EU admission in Bulgaria is finalised by a certificate from the ministry, and your university applies for it, using your attested documents. You cannot telephone for a progress update, you cannot escalate, and you cannot find out where your file sits. It takes several weeks, and universities frequently submit in batches — so other applicants' delays arrive in your calendar alongside your own.

Here is the piece almost everyone gets backwards. EU law gives a complete student application a maximum of 90 days for a decision, but the clock starts when the file is complete. Without the ministry certificate, a Bulgarian file is not complete. So the wait that worries people most is not inside the 90 days at all — it sits in front of them, uncounted. The September-October intake, worked backwards

The last column is the important one. Most of these rows are not published dates. They are our planning advice, built by leaving room for the clocks above. Presenting the two as the same thing is the most common dishonesty in this subject, and it is why a plan that looks authoritative can still miss an intake.

Read the paperwork rows as separate projects, because each has its own timescale: collecting transcripts and certificates, attestation and apostille — Bulgaria accepts Bangladesh's apostille, which removes a consular chain that other destinations still require (the countries that refuse it) — certified translation in Dhaka, the police clearance certificate and the student e-passport.

The funds row is the one a rushed calendar damages most. Bulgarian law states a rule rather than a figure: a student's monthly means may not fall below the national minimum wage, EUR 620 a month in 2026, which is about EUR 7,440 a year. No blocked account is required — and that is precisely why the history of the account matters. February: not a late application

This is the expensive misreading. "I missed September, I will take February" sounds reasonable, but February's applications close the previous autumn — the same months in which you are concluding that September has gone. February does not buy preparation time. It buys a different arrival date, for the same work, done at the same time of year.

Who it genuinely suits: an applicant whose HSC result arrived late (applying while you wait), one who needs another attempt at an English test, or one whose bank history will simply look better with a few more months on it. The nine-country comparison is in the spring intake and who it suits.

Medicine runs a separate, earlier clock

The most common reason a Bangladeshi family looks at Bulgaria at all is medicine and dentistry — and that route does not use the calendar above. Those programmes generally sit behind a written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, they are a separate competition, and tuition can run above the EUR 3,000-5,000 band that applies to ordinary public programmes.

The examination date belongs to the university, not to you. So preparation months go at the front of the calendar rather than beside the application months, which in practice means starting late in the previous year. If it is now this month, here is what is realistically open

• November to January. Everything is open, and this is the ideal start. Beginning now leaves room for every clock, including the two you do not control.
• February to April. September is still realistic, but the work has to run in parallel — application, English test and documents together. Start looking at the Indian visa now, not in June.
• May. The boundary. With an offer in hand, September is fine. Without one, September is at risk, because the ministry wait is not something you can compress.
• June to July. September is possible only if you already hold an offer and your university has already filed with the ministry. If anyone promises a September start from a standing start in these months, do not believe it.
• August to September. This year's September has gone. Two honest options remain: apply now for February, or take next September and do it properly.
• October. The February window may still be open, and this is the best month of all to begin preparing for next September.

The wait-a-year test

Rushing is itself a risk. It is how funds documents get assembled badly, and badly-assembled funds are the weakest part of a refused file (why an inflated bank statement gets caught). If two or more of these are true today, the next cycle is the better decision:

1. 1Your bank history is only weeks old, or the source of the money is hard to explain.
2. 2The attestation, translation or birth-certificate chain has not started.
3. 3You have not begun the Indian visa, and the file must be decided in Delhi.
4. 4You have no English evidence and no test date booked.
5. 5You are aiming at medicine without having prepared for the entrance examination.

The arithmetic is not sentimental. A file decided in Delhi runs to roughly BDT 3-5 lakh on the Bangladesh side alone — BDT 10,000-30,000 for attestation, translation and legalisation, BDT 4,000-9,000 for courier, BDT 70,000-120,000 for a one-way ticket — and a refusal refunds none of it. One thing worth stating plainly here: the pre-embassy documents, the tuition, the insurance and the funds are not held by us. They go directly to the institutions concerned, before the visa. Our main consultancy fee falls due only after the visa succeeds; there is no upfront main fee.

Who this calendar is wrong for

Anyone determined to leave this year at any cost. The two slowest steps in a Bulgarian application are the two you cannot touch. Hurrying produces a weaker file, not an earlier flight.

Anyone building the budget on part-time earnings. Bulgaria publishes no weekly hours figure — work is limited and conditional, and that is the whole published rule. A specific number of hours, from anyone, is invented (student work rules in Bulgaria).

Anyone treating Bulgaria as a staircase. Moving to a German or Italian university after one or two years is a real pattern, but the receiving university decides. Treat it as a possibility, not a plan — and read what Bulgaria is actually good for and what studying in Bulgaria costs before choosing it for the price alone.

The dates we will not give you

We do not publish next year's specific dates, because they have not been published yet. The ones that will be published come from three places, and you should read all three yourself: your university's admissions page for the application window, the Bulgarian Embassy in New Delhi for appointments and the D visa, and the Migration Directorate for the residence card after you arrive. The ministry publishes no per-file timescale at all, and that is the central uncertainty on this route rather than something we can paper over.

The Delhi route is itself moving. Ask again before you buy a ticket: the day that category opens, the most expensive stretch of this calendar gets shorter.
