Study in Bulgaria from Bangladesh: the D visa in New Delhi, the ministry certificate and your TRC

In short: Secure an offer by May so the university can obtain your Ministry of Education certificate, then take the file to the Bulgarian Embassy in New Delhi in person, showing means of at least EUR 620 a month — about EUR 7,440 a year. Fly in on the D visa and apply for the TRC before it expires. Cheapest EU degree on our list; the Delhi trip is the price.

Bulgaria is known internationally for medicine and dentistry, and for a student whose binding constraint is money it is the least expensive entry point to an EU degree in any field. Three places trip people up: waiting for the ministry certificate, planning the Delhi trip, and the residence-card deadline after arrival. Here is the whole process.

The process at a glance

Programme and English: there is a route without IELTS

• English-taught programmes cluster in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, business and computer science; Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna are the familiar university cities
• IELTS is usually 5.5, but many universities run their own online English test, so you can apply without an IELTS score
• Medicine requires a biology and chemistry entrance exam — not an open door — and tuition is higher than in other fields
• Intakes in September–October; February is limited

The ministry certificate: the step that is not in your hands

Admission of a non-EU student is finalised by an admission certificate from the Ministry of Education and Science (MON) — the university applies for it using your attested documents. It is the central document of the visa file; without it, a Delhi appointment is pointless. It takes several weeks and universities often submit in batches, so an offer by May is what keeps September realistic.

Funds and documents

The law is a rule, not a figure

Bulgarian law says a student's monthly means may not fall below the national minimum wage — EUR 620 a month in 2026, about EUR 7,440 a year. Many files show EUR 8,000–9,000 for comfort. Statement plus solvency certificate, with an explainable source; no blocked account. The minimum wage changes each year, so verify the figure for your application year.

• Passport, photographs, D-visa form
• MON admission certificate plus the university's admission letter
• Proof of tuition paid (first year or instalment, per the university's rules)
• Academic certificates and birth certificate — attested or legalised, with translation (attestation guide)
• Bank statement plus solvency certificate (EUR 7,440 or more)
• Health insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the full period
• Police clearance certificate and a medical certificate
• Accommodation document (dormitory or contract)

Delhi: plan to finish in one trip

Bulgaria has no mission in Dhaka, so the D visa is applied for and interviewed in New Delhi, in person. The plan:

• Indian visa (allow two to four weeks), then the Delhi appointment, then the ticket
• Every original document with you; interview questions are ordinary — why Bulgaria, why this programme, how the funds work, what comes after graduation
• Budget BDT 40,000–60,000 for travel and stay
• Decisions usually take four to eight weeks (check the embassy's current guidance); confirm in advance how your passport comes back — courier or a second trip

After arrival: the TRC and Schengen

Enter on the D visa and, within its validity, apply at the local Migration Directorate (MVR) for the temporary residence card — with address registration, insurance, enrolment and funds documents. The card grants a year of legal residence, renewable. It also carries travel to 29 European countries for 90 days in any 180: Bulgaria is fully in Schengen.

Work: limited part-time work under conditions, with the employer registering you at the Employment Agency — do not build the budget on it. Language: the Cyrillic alphabet makes daily life off campus a bigger adjustment than in Malta or Cyprus.

Credit transfer: moving to a German or Italian university after one or two years is a real pattern — but the receiving university decides, on programme fit and results. It is a possibility, not a promise; choose Bulgaria as a place where your degree may finish.

The mistakes that cost people
