Where Bangladeshi students apply for a Bulgarian student visa, and why the interview is not optional

No embassy, and the ministry says so

The Bulgarian foreign ministry's own country information for Bangladesh states that the Republic of Bulgaria does not have a functioning embassy in Bangladesh and that the embassy in New Delhi is accredited for Bangladesh. That is the whole basis of this route, and everything else follows from it.

The interview is a rule, not a risk

For a Bulgarian long-stay type D visa, a personal interview is a standing requirement of the visa procedure. It is not a screening step applied to suspicious files; it applies to the category. That single fact is what makes Bulgaria different from, say, Malta, where a well-assembled file can move without you meeting anyone.

Prepare for it as an ordinary conversation about a decision you have made: what you will study, why Bulgaria, who pays, and what you will do afterwards. The standard preparation applies — student visa interview questions in Europe and answering "why this country".

The honorary consulate: what it can and cannot do

Bulgaria maintains an Honorary Consulate in Gulshan 2, Dhaka. It is a genuine appointment and it is useful for information and for certain document services. It is not a visa section. It cannot take a type D application, cannot conduct the interview, cannot take biometrics and cannot influence a decision made in Delhi.

This is the most expensive misunderstanding on this route, and it is not unique to Bulgaria: the general pattern is set out in the European countries with no embassy in Dhaka.

The Dhaka centre, and what it can actually do for you

From 1 November 2025, Bulgaria and VFS Global began accepting long-stay type D applications at centres in six Indian cities including New Delhi, which for applicants resident in India removes the need to attend the embassy for submission. A Bulgaria visa application centre also operates in Dhaka, and its category list includes "Long Term Visa (Type D)". Both facts together make it look as though the Delhi journey has quietly ended.

It has not. We telephoned the Dhaka centre on 9 September 2026 and asked whether a student can lodge a complete type D file there. The answer was that the category is not yet operating from Bangladesh — the service has been announced, but work on it has not started. The Indian centres are allocated by residence, as consular jurisdiction normally is, and a service designed for residents of India does not extend to a third country. So the position for a Bangladeshi student is unchanged: the application and the interview happen at the embassy in New Delhi.

Watch the Dhaka listing, because it will presumably become real at some point and this is the single change that would most improve this route. Until it does, plan and budget for Delhi — and ask the centre again before you buy a ticket, because nobody will announce the switch to you.

Building the trip

If your file does require Delhi, run two processes at once and start the Indian one first:

1. 1Indian visa — its own application, its own timeline, begun as soon as your Bulgarian admission is confirmed.
2. 2Appointment, confirmed in writing, before the ticket.
3. 3All originals in hand luggage. One trip is the target.
4. 4Costed against the numbers in the Dhaka-or-Delhi map.

What the type D visa is, and what it is not

A Bulgarian type D visa is the long-stay entry document. It is not the permission to live in Bulgaria for the length of your degree. After arrival you apply to the Bulgarian migration authorities for a residence card, and that card is what carries your status, your right to remain and the conditions attached to it.

This matters more on the Bulgarian route than on most, because the effort of getting the visa is high enough that students treat it as the finish line. It is the start line. Budget time and money for the residence step in your first weeks, and take the university's international office seriously when it sets a date for it.

Where the time actually goes

Nothing in that table is a promise, and nobody publishes a student visa success rate for Bulgaria or for any of the other eight. If a figure is quoted to you, ask which official page it came from; the question usually ends the conversation.

Bulgaria's own facts, kept straight

Bulgaria joined the Schengen area fully on 1 January 2025 and adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, at the fixed rate BGN 1.95583 to EUR 1. It accepts a Bangladeshi apostille, which shortens the attestation chain compared with Denmark, Greece and Finland. The honest summary

Bulgaria is the least convenient of our nine to apply for and one of the cheapest to live in, and both halves of that sentence are true at once. The convenience cost is a Delhi journey and a mandatory interview; the compensation is a total first-year figure that few of the other eight can match. Decide early, confirm the submission point in writing, and never let an honorary consulate stand in for a visa section.
