The arithmetic first
Medical University of Sofia was founded in 1917 and is Bulgaria's oldest medical school, with faculties of medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy and public health. The English-language medical programme runs six years.

⚠️ Bulgaria is one of the EU's cheapest countries and medicine is the exception to that rule. A general bachelor's there costs EUR 3,000-5,000 a year. Medicine costs roughly double to triple it. Anyone selling "affordable MBBS in Europe" is quoting the country's reputation, not this programme's price.
Getting in: the exam is the gate
Medicine is the one Bulgarian subject where a competitive entrance examination is standard, and it is what separates this from a documents-only admission.

The licence chain, which is the real subject
A Bulgarian MD is an EU degree and carries EU-wide recognition frameworks for professional purposes. That is a genuine advantage and it is not a licence.

Write to BMDC before you enrol, naming the specific university and programme, and keep the written reply in your file. This is not a formality. It is the difference between a six-year degree that works at home and one that does not.
The parts nobody advertises
- Attrition is real. The pre-clinical years are hard, examinations are demanding, and students do fail out. No university publishes a completion rate for its international cohort, so nobody can honestly quote you one — but treat any promise of a guaranteed graduation as a warning about the person making it.
- Clinical teaching is in Bulgarian at the bedside. Patients speak Bulgarian. Universities teach Bulgarian medical language for exactly this reason, and it is coursework, not an optional extra.
- Six years is a long financial commitment with annual renewals of both the tuition and the residence permit. Model the whole thing in the cost calculator, not just year one.
- Agent fees. Bulgarian medicine is the single most heavily brokered product in this market. Tuition is published by the university. Ask what any fee above it buys.
Where applications fail
