What Sofia University is
Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski was founded in 1888 and is Bulgaria's oldest and largest university. Its Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics is the strongest part of it for most international applicants, and it has substantial law, economics, philology, physics and chemistry faculties alongside.
Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007, joined the Schengen area fully on 1 January 2025, and adopted the euro on 1 January 2026 at the fixed rate of BGN 1.95583 to EUR 1. Those three facts change what a Bulgarian degree is worth in a way that older articles do not reflect.

That is genuinely one of the cheapest routes into the EU, and it is why Bulgaria is marketed as hard as it is here. The cost is real. The marketing around it is often not.
English-taught provision, honestly
Sofia University does teach in English, but the provision is limited and concentrated — informatics and computer science, some economics and business, some philology and international programmes. It is not a university where every faculty has an English mirror.
Everything else is taught in Bulgarian, which means a one-year preparatory language course before the degree begins. That year is a real cost and a real year of your life, and it is frequently omitted from the total a student is quoted.

⚠️ Ministry of Education and Science recognition of your HSC is what delays a Bulgarian file. It is a separate administrative process from the university's decision, the university usually initiates it on your behalf, and it needs correctly attested documents to start. Get attestation done before you have an offer, not after.

Where it is strong, and where it is not
Strong: mathematics and informatics, physics, chemistry, Slavic and classical philology, law within the Bulgarian system.
Weaker for an international student: anything requiring Bulgarian professional registration, and anything where you are counting on an English-language graduate job market inside Bulgaria. Salaries are low by EU standards and most employment expects Bulgarian. Bulgaria works well as an affordable EU degree with EU mobility afterwards; it works badly as a plan to earn your way through the degree locally.
Where applications fail
- 1Attestation and recognition started too late. The commonest cause of a lost intake, and entirely within your control.
- 2Assuming a subject is taught in English when it is not, and discovering the preparatory year after committing.
- 3Paying an agent a large fee for a low-cost application. Bulgarian tuition is EUR 3,000-5,000; if the agency fee approaches that, ask precisely what it buys.
- 4A funds file that does not hold up — see proof of funds.

How much does Sofia University cost for a Bangladeshi student?+
Non-medical programmes for non-EU students typically run EUR 3,000-5,000 a year in 2026, with Sofia living costs of EUR 350-500 a month on top. Medicine is a different and much higher scale. The faculty's own page carries the binding figure.
