Where students actually live
Studentski Grad — literally Students' Town — holds the densest concentration of dormitories and cheap rentals and is on the metro. Lozenets and Ivan Vazov are quieter and mid-priced; Mladost and Lyulin are large, affordable residential districts; the centre is expensive. Three metro lines and low fares make the city easy to move around.
The universities
- Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" — Bulgaria's oldest and largest
- Medical University of Sofia — medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English; a well-known destination for Bangladeshi students
- Technical University of Sofia — engineering, with programmes in English and German

Work, honestly
Sofia has a large outsourcing and IT sector, so English-language work is genuinely more available here than anywhere else in Bulgaria — call centres, customer service, IT support. Pay is low by European standards, but so are costs, so the ratio is not as poor as it looks. Medical students, though, will not have the time.
The honest bits
- 1Winter air quality in Sofia is a known problem.
- 2Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which makes the first week harder than it needs to be. Learning the letters takes a couple of hours and pays for itself immediately.
- 3On the other side: one of the cheapest routes to an EU degree, fast internet, and a real English-language job market.

Typically EUR 400-650, among the lowest of any EU capital. A dormitory place brings accommodation down to EUR 50-120 a month.
Does Bulgaria use the euro now?+
Yes — Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Tuition and daily costs are both quoted in euros, so there is no lev conversion step any more.
Is there English-language work in Sofia?+
More than anywhere else in Bulgaria. The city has a substantial outsourcing and IT sector, so call centre, customer service and IT support roles in English do exist. Pay is low by European standards, but so is the cost of living.
