Where students actually live
Kyuchuk Parizh and Trakia are the cheapest residential districts. Around Kapana and the Old Town is attractive and more expensive. University dormitories sit in their own areas. The city is compact enough that most journeys are a walk or a short bus ride.
The universities
- Medical University of Plovdiv — medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English
- Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski" — broad, with some English-taught programmes
- University of Food Technologies — food technology and agricultural processing, directly relevant to Bangladesh's own industry
Work, honestly
Limited. There are some outsourcing offices, but far fewer than in Sofia, and most other work requires Bulgarian. Medical students will not have the time in any case. There is no realistic route here that does not involve having your funding secured before you arrive.
The honest bits
- 1Budget as if there is no work. That is the main constraint.
- 2A small airport — most journeys route through Sofia.
- 3On the other side: very low costs, an attractive and safe city, and an established medical school.
Before you fly
- 1For medicine, settle the conditions for practising in Bangladesh first — see the MBBS guide.
- 2Apply for a dormitory.
- 3Have the full year funded before you file the visa — see proof of funds.

Common questions
Is Plovdiv cheaper than Sofia?+
Yes, roughly EUR 70-130 a month less. But English-language work is much scarcer, so if you were planning on any income the comparison changes.
Which Plovdiv universities teach in English?+
Medical University of Plovdiv teaches medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English. Plovdiv University and the University of Food Technologies have some English-taught programmes — check each institution's own pages.
Why is it so cheap?+
A small city with low rents and a low-wage economy — which is also why work is scarce. Low costs and easy earning do not arrive together here, and the decision should be made knowing that.
