If you are searching for a master's in Italy, fix the vocabulary first. The degree a Bangladeshi graduate means by "master's" — the academic qualification that follows a bachelor's, normally two years — is the Laurea Magistrale. An Italian Master, first or second level, is something else: a professional qualification taken after a degree, usually one year. Two different products, sold under one English word, often on the same university website.
This is not pedantry. It decides the most expensive date in your plan, and what you are holding at the end.
The false friend, and what it costs
Italy's national procedure for international students sets one visa deadline per academic year: 30 November 2026 for 2026/2027, and 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028. It binds degrees — the Laurea, the Laurea Magistrale and the academic diplomas, single-cycle courses included.
It does not bind a Master universitario, a dottorato, Erasmus, single courses or foundation courses. Those have no national deadline — the only limit is that the application cannot arrive after teaching starts, and institutions may publish earlier dates of their own.
Put the two together and the trap appears. A student told that Italy's deadline is 30 November, while applying to a Master, is watching a date that does not govern them and may be ignoring a much earlier institutional one. A student who has read that a Master has no deadline, while applying to a Laurea Magistrale, is watching no date at all — and that is the version that ends a cycle. The brochure's English word will not tell you which you are; the programme's own page will, because it uses the Italian name.
Then there is the outcome. Someone who wanted the academic second cycle — to go on to a doctorate, or because an employer will read the qualification later — and who enrols on a professional Master has bought a real and often excellent thing that is not the one they were asked for. They translated a word.
The three postgraduate routes, side by side
| Laurea Magistrale | Master, first or second level | Dottorato di ricerca | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The academic second cycle, following a first degree | A professional qualification taken after a degree | Italy's research doctorate |
| What it is for | Academic depth, and the route to a doctorate | Specialising, or converting a degree into a job-shaped credential | Original research, and a research career |
| How long | Normally two years | Usually one year | The longest of the three |
| National visa deadline | Yes — 30 November 2026, then 31 October 2027 | None | None |
| The date that binds you | The national one, or the university's earlier date | The university's, never after teaching starts | The university's, per programme |
| Who it suits | Wants the recognised degree, and may study further | Buying a specific applied skill | Has a research plan and a supervisor in view |
Those lengths are typical rather than a rule: the exact duration and credit load are on the programme's own page. Read the last row first, then let the Italian name follow from it.
Eligibility is a question about credits, not years
European admissions count ECTS credits, a measure of study volume rather than time served. A three-year bachelor's is roughly 180 credits and a four-year bachelor's roughly 240, and most European master's programmes require at least 180. That is why a Bangladeshi four-year honours degree travels almost everywhere — it is an advantage, not merely acceptable.
The three-year pass degree is the problem case, and the arithmetic is not the whole story. On paper 180 clears a 180 bar; in practice evaluators place a pass degree below honours. The safest fix is one most people already have available: a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top of it, which lifts the file above the honours line and settles the argument before anyone has it. See three-year pass versus four-year honours, National University and private degrees and routes for polytechnic diploma holders.
On grades, no official universal conversion exists between a Bangladeshi CGPA and a European one, so treat a precise conversion as a warning sign. The working rule: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is a common threshold, 3.5 and above is competitive for scholarships, 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully rather than abandoning the plan. How conversion works has the mechanics; the nine countries with a low CGPA has the alternatives.
The recognition step has to start before everything else
Italy will not read your Bangladeshi transcript on its own terms. It wants the qualification evidenced as a CIMEA statement of comparability or a Declaration of Value — alternatives, and the institution decides which.
CIMEA is applied for online, is paid, and usually takes about a month. A Declaration of Value comes from the Italian Embassy in Dhaka, and some universities accept the application receipt while it is produced. This is the slowest part of the Italian timeline and the step that quietly decides whether you make the deadline — start it before the personal statement and the IELTS booking. Declaration of Value or CIMEA sets out which to chase.
Feeding it means transcripts and certificates, certified translation and course descriptions. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention on 30 March 2025 and Italy accepts an apostille — though not every European country does.
Language: B2 in four skills, not an IELTS number
The requirement written into the ministerial procedure is a level, not a test. Institutions must verify competence at at least B2 on the Common European Framework, and where the course is taught in a language other than Italian the certificate must cover all four skills — listening, reading, speaking and writing. There is no national rule saying IELTS 6.0.
What we observe as the typical ask is IELTS 6.0, with some accepting 5.5 — our observation, not the law. That is the difference between being told Italy is closed at 5.5 and finding a department where it is not. Italy's language requirement unpacks the rule, studying in Italy without IELTS the alternatives, the medium of instruction certificate the document Bangladeshi applicants reach for first.
If your Laurea Magistrale is taught in Italian, the institution runs its own Italian test at at least B2 and you sit it — a year of real preparation. Learning Italian before you go says where to start.
What a master's in Italy actually costs
Italian public universities do not charge a fixed fee. Tuition is set by an income assessment run through the ISEE parificato, and our dataset puts the range at EUR 0 to 4,000 a year. A low band can mean roughly EUR 150 to 200; filing nothing puts you in the top band, commonly EUR 2,500 to 4,000. The most valuable paperwork in the application is that assessment, not a scholarship form.
| What you pay | The figure | What people get wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Public university tuition | EUR 0 to 4,000 a year, income-assessed | Filing nothing is a choice, and it is the expensive one |
| Living costs | EUR 450 to 800 a month | Housing EUR 150-400, food EUR 120-220, transport EUR 25-45, other EUR 60-130 |
| Funds evidenced for the visa | EUR 10,179.85 for the year | One annual sum. No monthly figure is published, and no blocked account is required |
| Spending before you fly | Roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh | None of it refundable, and spent before any decision |
A Master universitario sits outside that picture: a different kind of course, not necessarily charged through the same assessment, so ask that course office for its fee. Is university really free in Italy and what Italy really costs hold the arithmetic.
The money must come from lawful and traceable sources, preferably the student's own, otherwise the family unit up to a relative of the fourth degree; the consulate checks the origin against family income and assets. Italy's proof of funds is the detail, sponsors and affidavits the case where the money is not yours.
DSU for postgraduates, and the rule that surprises everyone
The DSU is Italy's regional right-to-study scheme, and it is income-based rather than merit-based — unusual enough that Bangladeshi applicants rule themselves out for having ordinary grades. It covers a tuition waiver, a dormitory place, subsidised meals and an annual grant, and it is open to postgraduates.
It runs region by region, each with its own agency and its own deadline, separate from and often earlier than the university's. Eligibility runs through the ISEE parificato, built from translated and legalised Bangladeshi income and property documents, so it carries a lead time of its own. Italy's DSU scholarship, ISEE parificato for Bangladeshi families and which agency covers your university are the three to read together.
Now the rule that surprises everyone. A scholarship you have only applied for is not money. Merely applying for, or being eligible for, a right-to-study scholarship cannot count toward the means of subsistence without an explicit attestation that it was awarded. Apply on the DSU's timetable, and evidence the EUR 10,179.85 as though it will not arrive in time. Usually it does not. The eligibility list for Invest Your Talent in Italy is likewise redefined each edition, and Bangladesh has not been a consistent entry.
The timeline, and which deadline binds which
Italy has two intakes, September (the main one) and February. Work backwards from your intake, not forwards from today.
Pre-enrolment happens only through Universitaly, the ministry's single free official portal. Since 2026/2027 an institution may validate no more than its allocated international places plus a maximum of 20 percent, and at that ceiling a monitoring tool suspends further validations. It is a turnstile rather than a locked door — each visa refusal immediately frees one further validation, and an institution can request more by formal resolution of its academic bodies — but a late, otherwise perfect file can queue. No per-university allocation is published, so you can only be early. Universitaly step by step and the validation cap cover it.
Validation is not a visa; the consulate decides exclusively. Your visa is decided by the Italian Embassy in Dhaka, with submission and biometrics at VFS Global in Dhaka — there is no trip to Delhi for Italy. EU law gives a complete student application a maximum of 90 days, but the clock starts when the file is complete, and Italy publishes no processing-time guarantee. The Embassy and VFS in Dhaka, the type D checklist and Italy's deadline are the operational pages.
Who should not do a master's in Italy
The clearest case is the applicant whose real objective is a work permit rather than a degree. Italy allows 20 hours a week, bankable across 52 weeks up to a hard annual ceiling of 1,040 hours — a support to a budget, not an income. After graduation there is a job-seeking permit of not less than 9 and not more than 12 months, where 12 is a ceiling rather than an entitlement. And time on a study permit does not count toward Italy's five-year long-term residence route. If a plan only works when the immigration outcome is assumed, it does not work. A student visa is not a work permit and student work rules in Italy say it with the rules attached.
Three others should look elsewhere. Someone with a three-year pass degree who will not add the one-year Bangladeshi master's will spend a cycle arguing with evaluators and may still lose. Someone who needs a licence to practise — nursing being the example, where the requirement is the local language at B1 to B2 plus registration with the national regulator, neither of which comes with the degree. And someone who genuinely wants the applied qualification should stop squeezing into a Laurea Magistrale: the Italian Master may be exactly right, and reading this page as a warning against it is the wrong lesson. What Italy is actually good for decides whether the country fits at all.
What to do next, in order
- 1Find the Italian name on the programme page: Laurea Magistrale, Master or dottorato. Everything follows from that word.
- 2Write down two dates — the university's own deadline, and the national visa deadline if it is a degree. Diary the earlier one.
- 3Start the recognition document, CIMEA or a Declaration of Value, this week. It is your longest lead time.
- 4Read the language sentence literally, and email admissions if it is ambiguous. Save the reply.
- 5Build the funds file to EUR 10,179.85, treating any scholarship as absent until awarded in writing. Find your region's DSU agency and its separate deadline.
- 6Complete Universitaly pre-enrolment as early as your documents allow, then book VFS Dhaka. The full Italy guide is the page to keep open.

Common questions
Is an Italian Master the same as a master's degree?+
No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in Italian admissions. The academic qualification that follows a bachelor's is the Laurea Magistrale, normally two years. A Master universitario, first or second level, is a shorter professional qualification taken after a degree, usually one year. Both are real and both are legitimate, but they are different things with different purposes, and the national visa deadline binds only the first. Read the Italian name of the programme on its own page, not the English word on the brochure.
Does the 30 November 2026 deadline apply to my master's?+
It applies if you are enrolling on a Laurea Magistrale, because the national deadline binds degrees: the Laurea, the Laurea Magistrale and the academic diplomas, single-cycle courses included. For the academic year 2026/2027 it is 30 November 2026, and for 2027/2028 it is 31 October 2027. It does not apply to a Master universitario, a dottorato, Erasmus, single courses or foundation courses, where there is no national deadline and the only rule is that the application cannot arrive after teaching has started. In every case your university may publish its own earlier date, and that is the one that actually governs your calendar.
Will my Bangladeshi three-year pass degree be accepted for an Italian master's?+
It is the problem case. European programmes count credits rather than years, and most master's ask for at least 180 ECTS, which a three-year bachelor's roughly reaches on paper. The difficulty is that evaluators place a Bangladeshi three-year pass degree below honours, so the credit arithmetic is not the whole story. The safest fix is a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top of it, which lifts the file above the honours line and removes the argument entirely. A four-year honours degree of roughly 240 ECTS is accepted almost everywhere.
What CGPA do I need for a master's in Italy?+
There is no official universal conversion between a Bangladeshi CGPA and a European grade, so no honest adviser can give you a single cut-off. The working rule across European admissions is that 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is a common threshold, 3.5 and above is competitive for scholarships, and 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully rather than giving up. In Italy the decision sits with the individual programme's academic regulations, so the number that matters is the one on that programme's page.
Do I need a CIMEA statement or a Declaration of Value?+
One of the two, and the institution decides which. A CIMEA statement of comparability is applied for online, is paid, and usually takes about a month. A Declaration of Value is issued by the Italian Embassy in Dhaka, and some universities will accept the application receipt while the document itself is being produced. This is the slowest part of the Italian timeline, so start it before anything else. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention on 30 March 2025 and Italy accepts an apostille, which simplifies the legalisation of the documents that feed it.
Do I need IELTS 6.0 to do a master's in Italy?+
There is no national IELTS rule in Italy. The requirement written into the ministerial procedure is at least B2 on the Common European Framework, and for a course taught in a language other than Italian the certificate must cover all four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. What we observe as the typical ask across Italian programmes is IELTS 6.0, with some accepting 5.5, but that is our observation of programmes rather than a rule of the country. If the Laurea Magistrale is taught in Italian, the institution runs its own Italian test at a level of at least B2.
What does a master's at an Italian public university actually cost?+
Tuition at a public university is income-assessed rather than fixed, and our dataset puts the range at EUR 0 to 4,000 a year. A low assessed band can mean roughly EUR 150 to 200, while filing nothing puts you in the top band, commonly EUR 2,500 to 4,000, so the assessment is worth more than most scholarships people chase. Living costs run EUR 450 to 800 a month. A Master universitario is a different kind of course and is not necessarily priced through the same assessment, so ask that course office in writing what the fee is before you assume anything.
Can a DSU scholarship count as my proof of funds?+
Not while it is only an application. The ministerial procedure is explicit that merely applying for, or being eligible for, a regional right-to-study scholarship cannot count toward the means of subsistence without an explicit attestation that it was awarded. You must still evidence EUR 10,179.85 for the year from lawful and traceable sources, preferably in your own name. DSU is worth applying for on its own merits, but plan your visa file as though it will not arrive in time, because most of the time it does not.
Can I work while doing a master's in Italy?+
Yes, up to 20 hours a week, and the hours can be banked across 52 weeks up to a hard annual ceiling of 1,040 hours. That ceiling is the part people are not told: it is not a 20-hour week plus unlimited holiday work. Part-time earnings can support a budget but cannot replace the funds you must evidence for the visa, and they will not cover tuition and living costs on their own.
Is a master's in Italy worth it if my real goal is to stay and work?+
Be careful with that plan. After graduation Italy offers a job-seeking permit of not less than 9 and not more than 12 months, where 12 is a ceiling rather than an entitlement, and you have to convert to a work or family permit to keep building anything. Crucially, time spent on a study permit does not count toward Italy's five-year long-term residence route. A master's in Italy is an excellent education decision and a slow immigration decision, and it is honest to say so before you spend BDT 2 to 4 lakh getting there.
