Which DSU agency covers your Italian university?

Why this is a question at all

Most countries run one national scholarship with one portal and one deadline. Italy does not. The right-to-study grant, Diritto allo Studio Universitario (DSU), is a regional competence: the money is regional, the rules are regional, the portal is regional and the deadline is regional. Two students starting the same month at two Italian universities apply to two different agencies, on two different websites, by two different dates.

This is the single most common way a Bangladeshi student loses a DSU award. Not a weak application - an application submitted to the wrong body, or on the date that applied to somebody else's region.

The agency map

This list is not exhaustive and agencies do get merged and renamed. The authority is your own university's right-to-study page, which names its agency and links its current call. Find that page before you find anything else.

⚠️ Lombardy catches people out constantly. Milan is the most searched Italian destination for Bangladeshi students, and there is no ER-GO equivalent there - Politecnico di Milano and the Statale each publish their own income-assessed scholarship call. Searching for "the Lombardy DSU agency" returns nothing useful because it does not exist.

What the deadline actually looks like

There is no national date. The pattern across agencies is:

Read that timeline against your own. You are applying in August, from Bangladesh, before your visa decision and before you have flown. Waiting until you arrive in Italy means the window has closed. That is the whole trap, and it is why this article exists separately from the general DSU guide.

What you have to have ready by then

• A valid ISEE parificato - the Italian income assessment calculated from your family's Bangladeshi documents. This takes weeks, not days: see the ISEE guide.
• Proof of admission or pre-enrolment. Most agencies let you apply as a "condizionato" candidate before you are formally enrolled, but you must complete enrolment by their stated date or the award lapses.
• An Italian tax code (codice fiscale), which you can obtain from the Italian consulate.
• A bank account able to receive the payment, in your name.

What the award is worth

DSU is not only cash. A full award for a student classified fuori sede - living away from the family home, which every international student is - normally combines a tuition waiver, a cash grant, a subsidised or free hall place and canteen meals. Recent national minimums for the fuori sede cash component have sat in the region of EUR 6,000 to 7,000 a year, and part of that may be delivered in kind as housing and meals rather than paid to you. Each agency publishes its own figure in its own call. Do not budget from any article, including this one.

The merit condition nobody reads

DSU entry is assessed on income. Staying on it is assessed on credits. A first-year student is normally awarded conditionally and must earn a minimum number of credits by a date in August - commonly around 20 credits for a first-year bachelor's student and around 30 for a first-year master's - or the agency reclaims what it has paid.

That clawback is real and it is retrospective. Students who treat the first year as a settling-in period and fail the credit threshold end up owing money back in year two, at exactly the point they have no scholarship coming.

Why applications fail

4. 4Documents not legalised through the Italian Embassy chain in Dhaka.
5. 5Enrolment not completed by the agency's own confirmation date.
6. 6Credits missed in year one, triggering repayment.

What to do now

1. 1Open your university's right-to-study page and write down the agency name and last year's deadline. Last year's date tells you the month; that is enough to plan.
2. 2Start the ISEE parificato paperwork now - it is the long pole.
