Who can sponsor
| Relationship | Acceptance |
|---|---|
| Parent | ✅ Strongest, almost everywhere |
| Yourself | ✅ Cleanest, if you hold the funds |
| Sibling | ✅ Usually accepted, with clear relationship and income |
| Spouse | ✅ With marriage certificate |
| Uncle/aunt, grandparent | ⚠️ Country-dependent; Italy accepts a comparatively wide list |
| Friend or distant relative | ❌ Weak nearly everywhere |
The closer the relationship, the less explanation is needed. With a distant sponsor the officer's natural question is why that person would fund several years of study, and you have to answer it.
The three things needed together
1. Proof of relationship
- Your birth certificate showing your parents' names
- Marriage certificate (for a spouse)
- Family or citizenship certificate where needed
- For siblings, both birth certificates showing the same parents
2. A legitimate source of income
This is where most files are weak.
| Sponsor type | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Salaried | Appointment or salary letter, payslips, salary credited to the bank |
| Business owner | Trade licence, TIN, income tax return, business bank statements |
| Agricultural income | Land deeds, khatian, evidence of crop sales |
| Expatriate | Employment contract, salary evidence, remittance records |
| Rental income | Tenancy agreements, rent credited to the bank |
⚠️ An income tax return is strong evidence in almost every case, because it is a government document giving an independent check on income. See TIN and tax returns.
3. A balance consistent with the income
A declared income of 40,000 taka a month with a 40 lakh balance raises questions without an explanation. If it came from a property sale or long-term savings, provide the documents. Large explained amounts are fine; large unexplained ones are not.
Writing the sponsorship letter
One page, signed, in English, containing:
- 1The sponsor's full name, occupation, address, passport or NID number
- 2The relationship to you, stated clearly
- 3Which costs they will cover — tuition, living, travel, insurance
- 4The period — for the full duration of study
- 5A reference to the source of income
- 6Date and signature
Keep it short, specific and numerical. Emotional language does not help here.
The truth about affidavits
An affidavit is a declaration made before a notary. It proves that someone made a statement — it does not prove the statement is true.
So: having one is good; having only one is not enough. Some applicants submit an affidavit and consider the financial section complete, and those are among the most frequently refused files. Add the affidavit to the other evidence, never in place of it.
Multiple sponsors
Possible, and sometimes necessary (a father and a brother together). Then each needs their own sponsorship letter, proof of relationship and income evidence, with the share each is covering stated clearly.
But keep it to one or two where possible. The more sponsors appear, the more it looks like funds were assembled for the application — which is exactly the wrong message.
Start early
Assembling a sponsor's paperwork can take two to three months — renewing a trade licence, filing a tax return, obtaining a bank solvency certificate, retrieving deeds. Begin at the start of the process, alongside the attestation of your educational documents, not at the end.
Official sources — check for yourself
Rules and figures change. We review these articles periodically and show the date above, but always confirm the current requirement with the official source before you act on it.
Common questions
Who can sponsor a student visa?+
Parents are strongest, followed by siblings and a spouse. Uncles, aunts and grandparents are country-dependent — Italy accepts a comparatively wide list. Friends and distant relatives are weak nearly everywhere, because the officer will ask why that person would fund years of study.
Is an affidavit enough on its own?+
No. An affidavit proves someone made a statement, not that the statement is true. It must sit alongside proof of relationship, evidence of a legitimate income source and a bank balance consistent with that income — files submitted on an affidavit alone are among the most frequently refused.
Can I have more than one sponsor?+
Yes, with a separate sponsorship letter, relationship proof and income evidence for each, and the share each covers stated clearly. Keep it to one or two though — more sponsors makes it look like funds were assembled for the application.
