TIN and income tax returns: the most underrated document in a student visa file

Why it carries so much weight

Three reasons a visa officer weighs it above other documents:

  1. 1It is a government document — not produced by you or your bank
  2. 2It is historical — several years of filings mean several years of consistent income
  3. 3It is independently verifiable — and verifiability is the basis of credibility

This is why two files with the same bank balance can be strong and weak respectively. The difference is the explanation of the income.

Where it matters most

  • When the sponsor is a business owner — there are no payslips, so the return is the primary income evidence
  • When the balance looks large relative to income — the return explains the gap
  • With several income streams — rent, agriculture, business shown in one place
  • After a previous refusal — one of the most effective additions when reapplying

Getting a TIN

Registering for a taxpayer identification number (e-TIN) in Bangladesh is free and online:

  1. 1Register on the National Board of Revenue's e-TIN portal
  2. 2Verify with NID and mobile number
  3. 3Complete your details (individual or business)
  4. 4The TIN certificate downloads immediately

⚠️ But having a TIN and filing a return are different things. The TIN certificate alone adds little to a visa file. What counts is the acknowledgement receipt from filing a return, which states the declared income.

Filing

  • Online through NBR's e-return system (simplest for salaried people)
  • In person at the relevant tax circle office
  • Through a tax practitioner — common where business income is complex

Attach the acknowledgement or certificate you receive. Where possible provide the last two or three years — consistency is far more persuasive than a single year.

If the sponsor has no returns

Honestly: many people in Bangladesh with legitimate income do not file regularly, especially in agriculture and small business. The file can still be built, but the income evidence has to come from elsewhere:

Sponsor typeAlternative evidence
Business ownerTrade licence, business bank statements, purchase and sale records
FarmerLand deeds and khatian, crop sale receipts, union council certification
Rental incomeTenancy agreements and rent credited to the bank
ExpatriateEmployment contract, salary evidence, remittance records

The best single piece of advice: start filing at least a year before the visa application. It takes time precisely because consistency is what makes it valuable — and it is preparation that will serve you in any future financial process, not just this visa.

One serious warning

⚠️ Do not file an inflated return to support a visa. That is the mirror image of tax evasion — declaring false income — and it creates a legal problem in Bangladesh that outlasts any visa problem. Declare what is true; if there is a shortfall, change the funding plan or choose a lower-cost country instead.

Official sources — check for yourself

Common questions

Is a TIN required for a student visa?+

Not mandatory everywhere, but the sponsor's income tax return is one of the strongest documents in a file — a government record that is historical and independently verifiable. It is close to essential where the sponsor is a business owner.

Is the TIN certificate alone enough?+

No. Having a TIN and filing a return are different. What counts is the acknowledgement receipt from filing, which states the declared income — ideally for the last two or three years.

What if the sponsor has never filed?+

Build the income evidence from other documents — trade licence and business statements, land deeds and crop sale receipts, tenancy agreements and rent records, or an employment contract and remittance records — and start filing now, since consistency takes time to establish.
