Italy is the country where the published tuition figure tells you the least, because Italian public universities do not charge a price. They charge an assessment of your family's income. That single fact is why two Bangladeshi students at the same university, on the same course, can pay EUR 156 and EUR 3,800 in the same year.
So the honest way to answer "what does Italy cost" is to separate three different pots of money: what you spend to live, what you must show an embassy, and what you spend in Dhaka before any of it starts.
The first-year total
| Line | Low | High | What moves it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public university tuition | EUR 0 | EUR 4,000 | Your ISEE band, or the top band if you file nothing |
| Living, twelve months | EUR 5,400 | EUR 9,600 | City above all — Milan against Perugia |
| First-year total | EUR 5,400 | EUR 13,600 | |
| Funds to evidence (not spent) | EUR 10,179.85 | EUR 10,179.85 | Fixed by the annual ministry circular |
The bottom row is the one that surprises people. It is not part of your spending — it is money you demonstrate you have access to. For 2026/27 it rose from EUR 6,947.33 to EUR 10,179.85, an increase of about 46 per cent in a single year, and a plan built on last year's figure is now roughly EUR 3,200 short.
Tuition is an assessment, not a price
Italian public universities charge a single all-inclusive contribution scaled to a household indicator called ISEE. A family whose income and property are in Bangladesh has no Italian tax record, so they obtain the foreign-family version, the ISEE parificato.
| Assessed position | Typical year of tuition |
|---|---|
| Inside the no-tax area | EUR 0-200, often only the regional tax and stamp duty |
| Middle bands | EUR 500-1,500 |
| Upper bands | EUR 1,500-2,500 |
| No ISEE filed at all | The maximum band, commonly EUR 2,500-4,000 |
Read the last row twice. Not filing is not neutral: it is an automatic assignment to the top band, and nobody warns you until the bill arrives. The document chain runs through a CAF office in Italy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka and the Italian Embassy, and takes six to ten weeks — so it is started before you fly, not after. The full walkthrough is in ISEE parificato explained.
Private universities work the opposite way: a published price, commonly EUR 6,000-20,000, no income assessment, and no DSU scholarship. The comparison is in public versus private universities in Italy.
A month of living, by line
| Item | Per month | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation, shared or hostel | EUR 150-400 | The single biggest variable |
| Food | EUR 120-220 | Lower if you use the university mensa |
| Transport | EUR 25-45 | Student passes are heavily discounted |
| Phone, books, personal | EUR 60-130 | |
| Total | EUR 450-800 | Milan sits above this band |
Milan is genuinely more expensive than the rest of the country — a room there runs EUR 450-700 rather than EUR 150-400. If your budget is the constraint and your programme exists in more than one city, the city choice is worth more money than any scholarship you are likely to win.
What you spend in Bangladesh, before you fly
This is the pot students consistently leave out of the plan, and it is real cash out of the door months before the first lecture.
| Item | Typical | When |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS, if your route needs it | BDT 22,000-25,000 | Before applying |
| University application and pre-enrolment | BDT 10,000 or so | At application |
| Attestation, legalisation, translation, insurance | BDT 1.2-1.3 lakh | Before the visa |
| Air ticket, Dhaka to Italy | BDT 70,000-1,20,000 | After the visa |
| Consultancy fee, if you use one | Varies by agency | Ours is payable only after the visa |
Italy accepts an apostille from Bangladesh — the convention has been in force since 30 March 2025 and Italy raised no objection, so the old consular legalisation chain is shorter than it was. That is not true everywhere: Denmark, Greece and Finland objected under Article 12, and an apostille is worthless for those three. The list is in which countries refuse a Bangladeshi apostille.
Where the number genuinely comes down
Two things, and only two, move an Italian budget by thousands rather than hundreds.
A correctly filed ISEE parificato. Discussed above. It is the highest-leverage piece of paper in the entire application.
The DSU regional scholarship. Need-based rather than merit-only, run by the regional welfare agency rather than the university, and it can bundle a tuition waiver with a hall place, a meal card and a cash grant — benefits worth EUR 5,000-7,000 a year. It is competitive, regional, and it has its own calendar, which is not the university's calendar. Start with which DSU agency covers your university and the DSU walkthrough.
We would say plainly: build the budget as though you will not win DSU. A plan that only works with a competitive scholarship is a plan with one point of failure.
What we will not tell you
We do not publish a success rate, an average cost, or a figure for what "most students" pay, because none of those is a number anyone can evidence. What we can point at is the ministry circular that sets the funds requirement, each university's own fee table, and the regional agency's own scholarship notice. Every one of them is republished annually and every one of them is linked below.
What to do next
- 1Put your programme and city into the cost calculator to see the first-year total against your own budget rather than a range.
- 2Ask your family's accountant today what documents an ISEE parificato needs. That answer decides your tuition band.
- 3Check the current means-of-subsistence figure on the Universitaly circular before you open a bank statement — it moved sharply this year and it can move again.
- 4Compare the total against the other cheap routes in Italy, Hungary or Bulgaria on a tight budget.

Common questions
How much money does a Bangladeshi student need for one year in Italy?+
Roughly EUR 5,400 to 13,600 of actual spending — EUR 0-4,000 of income-assessed public tuition plus EUR 450-800 a month to live. On top of that the visa file must evidence EUR 10,179.85 in available funds for 2026/27, which is money you show rather than money you spend, and about BDT 1.5-2 lakh goes on Bangladesh-side paperwork, insurance and the ticket.
Why did the Italian proof-of-funds figure jump so much?+
The means-of-subsistence amount is set by an annual ministry circular, and for 2026/27 it rose from EUR 6,947.33 to EUR 10,179.85 — about 46 per cent. It is a single national figure, not a per-university one, so it applies wherever you study. Check the current circular before you prepare a bank statement, because it is reissued each year.
Is Italy actually cheaper than Hungary or Bulgaria?+
Often, but only if the paperwork is right. A correctly filed ISEE parificato can put an Italian public university below both. Without one you are charged Italy's top band by default and Hungary or Bulgaria wins on cost, while also asking for far less money at the visa stage. The paperwork decides this, not the country.
Can part-time work cover my living costs in Italy?+
Not in the first year, and it should not be a line in your budget. The legal limit is 20 hours a week, but most part-time work in Italy requires Italian even when your degree is taught in English, and the first months go on settling in. Treat any earnings as relief on the budget, not as part of it.
